The number can't be too high since the Paralympics are starting tomorrow.

15 ( +24 / -9 )

it is of course a complete coincidence that this unusually low number comes out on the same day as Suga announces his bid for re-election as head of the LDP.

13 ( +19 / -6 )

This is as result of total tests of 2685 done yesterday to return a positive number of 2447 - a positivity rate of 91.1%

This is crazy high number and no where else in the world would have seen any such high positivity number am sure

Also total tests of 2685 for a metropolis like Tokyo with population of 14 Million is beyond ridiculous...

Yes, it's setting the bar lower...

down 1,945 from Sunday and 515 fewer than last Monday.

Yep and fewer tests even making room for the adjustment in testing numbers that will come tomorrow?

It is odd that the number of tests always gets adjusted higher the following day but never the number of positive cases.

This is a statistical impossibility

Delta variant peaking along with increased vaccinations and SOEs could be the reason for the decrease in numbers. Tap down vote now..

6 ( +9 / -3 )

Much higher cases, less of an increase in severe cases and hardly any higher deaths.

So much gaslighting...

To clarify, based on yesterdays numbers:

Active cases:

640% increase on last month

(33006 increasing to 211710)

Severe cases:

430% increase on last month

(431 increasing to 1896)

Deaths:

380% increase on last month

(9 increasing to 34)

Tokyo the most crowded area in Japan showed a dramatic decrease while the other parts of Japan reported similar numbers to the past few days! How much clearer can it be that Tokyo has manipulated the numbers to show things are getting better in time for the ParaOlympics and Sugas leadership announcement!

Of course the government is blamable for the low number of testing, but it's not that simple.

For example, if I want to get a test, even from a private clinic, I must notify my daughter's yochien about it. Just the fact that I got a test, regardless of the result, I need to tell the kindergarten. There have been a couple times when I thought I should get a test but was persuaded not to for this reason.

Also, imagine phoning your boss and telling him you've got covid. Even if you try to hide it, there's always a chance the company will find out if you get yourself tested. Just the fact that you've gone in for a test may raise suspicion. In this culture, are you surprised by the low official numbers?

Ya, the government should do more testing, but the problem is more cultural.

@tokyoite Tokyo not Japan. Kanagawa -Osaka are not hiding real figures

Meanwhile at work: let's increase work-at-office days!

4 ( +10 / -6 )

Limited testing done once again to show fake numbers for the ParaOlympics! 91.1% positive rate simply shows how the Government is going out of its way to manipulate things! People are suffering from job loses, illness and depression but the Government has been prioritizing Olympics all along.

In other news Osaka out of sheer desperation started administering AZ vaccine today due to shortages of Pfizer and Moderna.

I don't think there is any danger but it is not the best performing with regards to Delta

A lot of people claiming tests reduced for one reason or another. If true, that's quite a conspiracy needed co-operation across Japan.

How does it work?

Simply increase the threshold for who qualifies for a test. They already did the same with who is considered "severe".

How else do you explain 90% positive rates, when the rest of the planet, even in the 3rd world, its considered a spiking outbreak at 15%.

Is there a memo sent out to actively reduce testing

No, a fax.

It's worth repeating. Looking at the data, the cases are definitely now on the decline. 3 out of the last 4 days have had less cases than the week before. Suga ended up being right not to implement a lockdown. In another few weeks, we'll be back to baseline, and this wave will be over

Now the fact they decreased testing this week by 15% on average compared to the same day the previous week has nothing to do with it, right?

Hey the only Tokyo pre Olympics system numbers are rising let's lower them by testing less until after the games.

Work for the Olympics so why not do it again for the Paralympics

what number would be high enough to satisfy you ?

It should be at least higher than Kanagawa (2579 today, 130 more that Tokyo)

3 ( +5 / -2 )

what number would be high enough to satisfy you ?

This is such a lame response. You insinuate that someone who just wants to know the truth of the situation somehow wants the numbers to be high. Are you not intelligent enough to distinguish between wanting to know something and wanting something to happen.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

It would be great to know the real number of positive cases.

1 ( +12 / -11 )

@Pukey2 Yeah, that's probably it...

1 ( +5 / -4 )

The situation here is definitely a concern but the mixed messaging from government, the patchy data and just the fatigue of the whole situation have people burned out sadly.

Jim,

You meltdown daily about the tests numbers. But those are always preliminary numbers as a lot of the tests are still coming in by fax and some clinics/doctors don't do it day of especially if inundated. Not sure what happened to the online system they did probably died like COCOA. Also all the private clinics are NOT required to file how many tests are even positive cases to public health (which is absurd) I think some do but they don't do it right away.

So definitely it's bad even you go on the data of 20 to 23% positivity rate on testing the StopCovid site has. It is a serious situation but these numbers are poor and pretty worthless as it stands.

Yesterday’s Tests are not today’s results, it has been always said that it takes 2-3 days for the results to come through. Has been said on this site many times before, but some people want to believe their way ( wannabe doctors, scientists, statisticians)

Divinda as I learned Covid 19 deaths are actually the daily number of people died but the ones that were officially given permission to be announced by next of kin. As I was wondering why some of the Date of Deaths on some days were from people weeks or months previous. I think they only release it quarterly or annually but the NIID Mortality rate site

https://www.niid.go.jp/niid/ja/from-idsc/493-guidelines/10559-excess-mortality-210806.html

This small report suggested for August and September 2020 Covid was responsible for an extra 595 deaths

https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.07.09.20143164v12.full#ref-10

So I am sure it is much higher these days.

I wonder if parents are allowed to have their children do the shopping for the family instead of being allowed to send them on a Paralympic adventure? ;-)

I'm not sure how the government could frown on that.

Now at 118M doses, with over 51M people fully vaccinated.

Does anyone know where these 51M people are located?

Here is a list of the worst prefectures in getting Vaccinations out and the lowest percentage of the population vaccinated.

*If you look at a line graph, today's numbers are encouraging. The curve is clearly flattening. With half of Tokyo having at least 1 shot, and more getting it each day, this should be Covid's last stand.*

Here is a list of the worst prefectures in getting the vaccine out and with the lowest percentage of their population Vaccinated in order of least worst to the absolute worst.

Chiba.

Kanagawa.

Shizuoka.

Ibaraki

Saitama.

Hokkaido.

Tochigi.

Osaka.

Tokyo.

Okinawa

None of these places comes close to 50%

This was the best I could find they all are about 20%

Suga ended up being right not to implement a lockdown.

You must be new. Japan's US-written constitution prevents lockdowns - so how has "Suga ended up being right"?

Looking at the curve, the trend we're seeing now isn't exclusive to Japan. In other countries like India and the UK, the delta variant had the same ascent and decline that we're seeing in Tokyo

Nope because the UK is still testing the same number of people every week/day for the past month ( oh and that is 600,000 to 800,000 daily Japan is averaging 55,000 ( one day 8/19 it reaches 230,000 the only time).

Tokyo testing declines daily starting on Monday and every week following a high cases number week they reduce testing by 15% to 20% on Sundays it drops to 3,000 test at the most.

Please don't try this stuff, take a look at the Tokyo numbers.

The only time cases drop it is when testing drops as opposed to the UK (and other developed countries) cases drop long before testing drops.

People on here cheer when the numbers go up saying they knew it and it’s the result of the failed government. Then when the numbers go down, they call government cover up.

This mindset is warped.

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

With these numbers, surely they can stop the SOE’s.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Now the fact they decreased testing this week by 15% on average compared to the same day the previous week has nothing to do with it, right?

There has also been twice the number of deaths in the past week in Tokyo compared to the week before.

Yet, somehow, there are only 4 more "severe" cases in Tokyo this Monday (272) compared to last Monday (268) and this is despite the additional 30,000+ new cases in Tokyo over the past week.

No the number of tests on the linked PDF are the number of tests done for today's results, read the official government page.

https://www.fukushihoken.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/hodo/saishin/corona2378.html

Yes a small adjustments will be made on the next days PDF release.

Only Saturday's results are often delayed until Monday.

Ok, explain this simple inconsistency.

In every other country testing falls a few weeks after they start seeing a reduction in cases.

In Japan testing goes down before we start seeing a reduction in cases.

How does that work? A crystal ball? Maybe the guy on the corner near the Tokyo government offices that reads fortunes and the future?

What a special place Japan must be to be able to anticipate lower numbers before hand.

Yesterday’s Tests are not today’s results, it has been always said that it takes 2-3 days for the results to come through.

If so then what you are saying is that the today's 2,447 cases are from 16,558 on the 20th?

Don't use stopcovid19 site those numbers are delays by as many as 3 days Toyokezai sometimes longer.

Oh dear! The number crunching hidden case conspiracy claims continue on a daily basis.

There is no evidence of manipulation by the government. The numbers speak for themselves. Much higher cases, less of an increase in severe cases and hardly any higher deaths. Vaccines are doing the job to Protect the elderly, those with underlying health symptoms and the obese from being fatalities.

@Fighto!

I am new to this site (not Japan). I registered last week under the handle @Jim, but coincidentally it was already taken, so to prevent any confusion, I reregistered under this handle. Sorry, my origin story isn't as insidious as you might have anticipated, haha :)

Anyway, back to the point.

Looking at the curve, the trend we're seeing now isn't exclusive to Japan. In other countries like India and the UK, the delta variant had the same ascent and decline that we're seeing in Tokyo. What Suga has or hasn't done, likely had little effect on Delta's curve, whatsoever.
