Either this is the calm before the storm (as some on here have been endlessly repeating)

repeating for over a year & a half !

Of course any death is tragic, but deaths still remain at the around the same rate despite the rise in cases.

Either this is the calm before the storm (as some on here have been endlessly repeating), or there really is something different about this wave.

Vaccine being the obvious.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Looks like numbers are coming down. Vaccines are effective after all. I'm getting my second shot tomorrow.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Based on what the actual transmission rates must be the hospitalisations are low as are deaths.

It seems that vaccinating the elderly and infirm was/is the best strategy and worrying about people who are not likely to die from this virus is a waste of time. Natural immunity to Covid must be high in Japan as actual case rates would be in the 10s of millions from the last 18months. Get more access to beds for any who recquire it and move on. Pfizer is already showing large decreases in efficacy against the delta strain so by vaccinating all there will likely be a Vaccine resistant strain that is going to reek havoc with the most at risk groups.

On top of which Pfizer must be very excited about making more money due to the requirement of booster shots every 6 months...

15,000 deaths in Japan without any lockdowns. I think this alone proves that lockdowns don’t work.

Too much anecdotal stuff without anything to back up the claims, it’s a daily occurrence.

Well put. The lockdowns create devastation all round. They are cruel and inhuman, thankfully in Japan these cannot be imposed.

All private clinics should be required to turn over anonymous test data results to public authorities.

This is actually a legal requirement. Covid 19 is a notifiable disease.

No it is not!

My daughter's company not only tested her team but didn't inform the government of 2 positive members which the company paid a private hospital to treat with using the health care system.

Her friend works the IT section in a major private testing lab and unless given permission no information is sent to the government privacy laws.

Only testing done by medical institutions are required to provide the government with test results.

This is why so many pop-up testing site have appeared.

So get tested by a private lab then treated in a private hospital not directly connected to the lab and the government doesn't know about it.

Foreigner in Tokyo..

All people who want a test can and should be encouraged to get one. Absolutely no turning anyone down under any circumstances because they "only" have a sore throat and fatigue or any other excuse the overlords in Tokyo cite. Willful intent to manipulate statistical data and deceive the population should be a crime. People want to be tested? TEST THEM.

The system would be over-run in a day. The test centers are doing a very good job (though not perfect of course) of narrowing down likely cases.

All people who have been in contact with anyone confirmed or suspected of infection should be required to get tested, even if only anonymously.

These people are being asked to self isolate, If they develop symptoms they are tested.

All private clinics should be required to turn over anonymous test data results to public authorities.

This is actually a legal requirement. Covid 19 is a notifiable disease.

All major companies should be required to have daily testing among employees, anonymously if necessary.

See answer 1. It would be a huge waste of resources for very little benefit.

No - I don't believe any of it @Antiquesaving, but your obsession with testing is becoming a little OTT.

The policy of Japan regarding testing has not changed and won't. Save your fingers.

Much rather they spend the money on getting the vaccine into all of us instead of throwing MORE money away.

This has been going on for nearly 2 years and you don't know anyone who has had the virus and definitely don't know anyone who has died from this so why are you so worried?

So true. I'd love to post a significant number. But this post will get deleted. Hint. It's just barely higher than the flu.

Ashley, - I don't understand your behavior. You preach about not going out at all, but you're filling your water bottles in a busy mall.

Filling your water bottles? From where the infected may have drunk.

Hello?

9 ( +11 / -2 )

Japan has the most unique covid variant in the world, someone needs to do a paper on it.

A variant that conveniently only goes up on Mondays and us so polite that it give the medical personnel a break every weekend by not spreading or affecting people.

Why bother with the present SOE.

The solution is for everyone to stay home Monday to Friday and everyone go out and work on the weekends and holidays when the nice cooperative virus is taking a rest

See how easy it is to ends the problem. A few weeks of only weekend work and outings and the virus will fade away.

A steady increase of around 20 per day of these in Tokyo . I wouldn't be surprised if schools close in Sep .

Wow mate, sounds like your circle of acquaintances is rather small. My sister, her husband, and her son all had it (they recovered at home), my cousin in her 40's had it (and was hospitalized). A friend of mine lost three family members to it, and another friend has been dealing with the joys of long Covid for over a year now.

You conveniently left out the last 2 days, why.

Now tell me what is the population of Tokyo 50,000, 60,000 a 100,000 or is it 14 million?

2,490 test done in a prefecture of 14 million, even 20,000 tests.

A certain country of 9 million is doing 300,000 tests a day.

Targeted testing is a lie because in no conceivable way would every week we see the same up and down from tens of thousands on Monday to under 3,000 every Sunday.

That is not a natural movement of any disease in existence.

To summary, the SoE is :

doing nothing to prevent the spread of the virus, all measures are of joke and most people do not take it seriously.

and putting in danger the business of izakaya/bar/restaurant hardly because of stupid measures from incompetent regional and central governments.

So Yes, SoE should be over !

Today may be the first day in a while that recoveries outpace new cases.

Also at 49.3% of the population having had their first dose of the vaccine with 83% of over 65s fully vaccinated. This will be the last wave of any significance.

Its best to remain positive and don’t get paranoid about things. My business was smashed by Covid, carried on, diversified and now it’s back to pre Covid levels. I meet Japanese face to face on a daily basis, only concerns they’ve shown re Covid is the loss in business.

Things will be back to normal pretty soon, stay safe, work hard and be positive.

Freedom and money... That's a rather shallow view of the effects of having your income and invests curtailed. This is how people make a living and what gives them a reason to wake up every morning...

When I read comments of people constantly repeating the number of deaths is very low and covid is just like a flu, I am shocked too,

I know how bad the situation is for people earning money from izakaya and bar. I have continue to support my local favourites one since the very beginning of the pandemic visiting them many times a month. They had to make business on the side to survive indeed. During 4th wave, it was the worst, they close for weeks because of ban on alcohol. During this 5th wave (the more severe), alcohol is no more banned, they shift opening 17-23 to 14-20.

@Antiquesaving

Hope you're back on your feet again soon. The people I know who were hardest hit seem to be those who opened new businesses just before the pandemic. I'm not sure how the subsidies work to be honest but the impression I get is that they can't avail of the full amount

Well welcome to my world.

I bought a place to open my business in the month this all started. Previously I was still working with my master who retired in 2019 and for part of 2019 I worked out of my rental house.

I spent 10 year apprenticing for my master building a relationship and reputation in a Japanese nationaly recognised craft and finally got the approval from my master to be accepted as a master.

Can you even begin to think what would happen if the Gaijin (me) was said to be responsible for a Japanese catching covid? Just catching.

Businesses are paying private hospitals not to report cases and paying cash to treat employees so no one knows there were any cases of covid, I know because both my adult Children's Japanese companies have done it.

The main issue is not that. I have many friends who run bars/restaurants, and the SOE restrictions have smashed them financially. Subsidies are not enough to cover rent in some case, and some have already been forced to close for good.

I know some decent business owners who are following the guidelines for worry of being thought disreputable. I want to see them able to earn a living again.

I know some friends and acquaintances hit by the virus and its disease. No one is dead but some have long lasting (months, not weeks) issues. But you seem to care only about number of deaths and business owners.

2 ( +11 / -9 )

With the local population largely protected against severe infection, I do wonder about the necessity of extending the State of Emergency until mid-September.

Yeah, I have to agree the SOE is pretty meaningless at this point to be honest - many bars/restaurants are just openly flouting the "rules" anyway, people are out and about as usual, trains are still packed with rush hour office workers, para-olympics will take place, high school baseball tournaments are happening, gyms still open...

What would happen if the SOE is lifted - malls can stay open past 8pm?...anything else meaningful?

5 ( +9 / -4 )

Sure and the second a case is traced back to their business if given permission to open that will be the end of it.

I want to open but a Gaijin and even a single person that possibility got covid in my store it would mean years of work gone in an instant.

Saw 2 Ramen shop in my neighborhood go in that way already.

So with 2,490 test done for today and 2,962 news cases that can only happen if they added in forgotten results from previous day's.

2,962 cases 2,490 tests.

How can you get 2962 cases out of 2490 tests???

Where did the additional 500 come from???

2962 positive cases.

Hilarious 2,962 cases 2,490 tests.

The 9 to 5 Japanese government covid army at it's best.

We are now fully immersed in the realm of fantasy!

18 ( +23 / -5 )

Vaccination rate reached 36,5% (fully) 48,6% (partially). That's one of the keys to deal with the pandemic.

1,603 serious cases nationwide but we should add all the ICU covid cases (no intubations,...) that Tokyo refused to count. So probably 2,000 in total. The number of ICU beds nationwide being low, this is not encouraging.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

Today no of 2962 is by far highest ever for Monday - also it shows yesterday 15 Aug total tests conducted are 2490?? Am I reading it right?

Beyond pathetic if tokyo has tested only 2490 yesterday? Of course the cases number will plunge if you dont test....
