Not being prophetic, but looking at Worldometers, the daily deaths are approaching levels in the sixth wave, and I wouldn't make a prediction about which way that trend is going. What is certain is that strain on hospital services is bound to cause an increase in deaths from other causes, like heart problems/stroke, delayed cancer treatment, and complications could be in everything from diabetics to pregnant women who are unable to access the care they could normally expect, as a result of the current strain on the healthcare system.

Funny how they have stopped whether the numbers increased and r not from the prior week

Agreed, Ashley. Most people seem to be suggesting that those triple-digit numbers don't matter, yet in a country that is supposed to be as "corona-proof" as Japan, triple-digit deaths per day is big. Those were 210 individual people who are gone now, who have left behind those who will mourn them. It's exhausting to see how many people just don't care at all as long as it's not someone they knew...

I'm curious if people are deliberately not reporting/going to the doctor when they catch Covid to avoid stigma. When people moved from Fukushima to other prefectures after the nuclear disaster, many were reportedly bullied and ostracized as if they themselves were radioactive. Perhaps some people are concerned about similar treatment if it's known by their neighbors that they had Covid.

Big drop in Tokyo. Due to Obon?

@Iraira

Makes perfect sense as the peak is just barely behind us, and serious cases/deaths develop days or weeks after infection and will continue to rise during this next week

“Funny how they have stopped whether the numbers increased and r not from the prior week”

Sorry but the week over week comparison is always included in the link highlighted in the article. You can find it there.

The sharp decrease could of course be related to the holiday. This wednesday versus wednesday last week are 34,243 and 38,940 respectively which is a decrease of just 12% so I wouldn't be too optimistic about cases falling away as fast as they came on based on this weekend.

The pandemic is the first thing in their lives that gave them a sense of meaning.

At least it’s real I suppose.

Some other people need to get their sense of meaning from fairies or ancient flying zombie spook stories.

National holiday = next to no testing. Let's see the numbers towards the back end of next week, when people come back from holiday. My money's on 50K by next Friday.

Remember everyone living and dying is not all that matters with covid. According to the CDC 1/5 get long Covid and some of those people suffer symptoms for over 2 years.

In North America, Covid is no longer in the news. You’d have to search on some govt website if you wanted to know the numbers. The media has moved on as has the vast majority of society. It is simply no longer a story. I hope Japan can reach this point someday and stop with all the hand wringing. Also, most people have dropped mask wearing.

Alex

Has anyone on this site ever said deaths don’t matter unless to someone they know? Never seen myself to be honest.

Maybe because some people like me don’t say RIP daily about the deaths you think it means we don’t care. I care as much as the next person, but displaying grief on public forums doesn’t change things, deaths don’t fall.

One week ago on Friday 5th cases in Tokyo were registered at 37,767 which is a decrease of 17,366 or in other terms 46%

@Derek

I'm normally very careful to not speak prophetically and make definitive claims but in this case I'll make an exception - I will eat my hat if next week has a higher daily average

@Iraira

Bitter, like a pill to swallow. Hopefully not though! I would put money on it. It is strange though isn't it how some people want me to be wrong, like they almost want infections to actually go up & up and more people to die so they can say "I told you so"

@as_the_crow_flies

You're completely right, which is why the govt needs to fall in line with other developed countries, listen to the experts and quickly reclassify this virus so efforts can be focused on the sick and at-risk instead of wasting resources on mass testing and tracking

this despite the numbers clearly ebbing for a week now.

A reminder that there are those out there that want this to continue.

The pandemic is the first thing in their lives that gave them a sense of meaning.
