The Tokyo metropolitan government on Monday reported 260 new coronavirus cases, down 188 from Sunday. It is the first time since April 5 that the figure has been below 300.
The average for Tokyo over the past seven days stands at 547.1.
People in their 20s (72 cases) accounted for the highest numbers, while 31 cases were aged 60 and over.
The number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms in Tokyo is 75, down two from Sunday, health officials said. The nationwide figure is 1,349, up two from Sunday.
Nationwide, the number of reported cases as of 6 p.m. was 1,793. Hokkaido had the most cases with 279, followed by Tokyo, Aichi (145), Okinawa (142), Kanagawa 139, Osaka (98 -- its lowest figure since March 22), Chiba (89), Saitama (67), Fukuoka (66), Hiroshima (65) and Gifu (42).
The number of coronavirus-related deaths reported nationwide was 74.

Actually it's quite remarkable that despite Japan's low testing numbers, the deaths hadn't piled up as much as many countries with high testing numbers.
ian
So you take the projections/estimates/guesses as truth.
Have you looked at the latest excess mortality data?
You should multiply it by that study's multiplier and you'll be downright aghast
Strangerland
But yes, it's not many people and only old people, who don't count, right?
Talk about privilege.

haha, can anyone believe these fake numbers in Tokyo? lol

Oh drats. I really wanted to compare with the UK which only had 1 covid-related death yesterday.

Reading my last sentence, which I quote, 'Looking at Japan's population, there is no need to manipulate. Just calculate.', it can be seen what has happened, and what is happening in Japan.
Commodore Perry
The positivity rate in Japan is one of the highest ever here. This is one of the most dangerous times to be out and about in Japan. Taking a train in Tokyo with 10 other people in the car? Statistically 2 people traveling with you are infected with Covid.
The government reacts by announcing vaccines will be available to everyone under 65 at the same time
Not such a novel approach--in the US, anyone can get the vaccine now. Which means, it is available to everyone under 65--at the same time.
Even if death rates were low in 2020 compared to the year before, that does not have any relation to the number of Covid deaths. Anyone want to argue that the number of Covid deaths in 2020 were lower than in 2019?
And, there is no manipulation of numbers. The numbers are just what they are. Extremely low number of tests. Extremely low number of cases. Extremely high positivity rate.
Looking at Japan's population, there is no need to manipulate. Just calculate.

E? but they just extended the SoE saying doctors are overworked , people can't get hospitalized and die waiting ..
bokuda
I believe that USA and European Nations are requesting Japan to do more testings and speed up vaccinations.
Do u think they r being irrational?

The actual study is here http://www.healthdata.org/special-analysis/estimation-excess-mortality-due-covid-19-and-scalars-reported-covid-19-deaths but unfortunately it isn't very scientific. Many fantastical criteria for covid19 death like suicide due to lock-down, they completely ignore masks , also cultural differences.

...ask around and see - at least in my area, crematoriums have had to make families wait (10-14 days in January was the longest of several local cases I heard about), because they can't handle the numbers.
The 2020 excess deaths are discussed right here in a preliminary report that in any case only covers up to September 2020. It states quite clearly that there were excess deaths, even with that early cut-off point and interim data.

So, now you make rules for people who make their comparisons but you can make unfounded claims multiple times a day. All of us who have witnessed what’s happening have seen the whole thing has been overblown and exaggerated in the West, maybe for political reasons, maybe others. However, Japan without lockdowns has done fine in comparison, fear and a divided populace has not occurred
Antiquesaving
From now on anyone trying to compare the covid death in Japan to another country must do so with a developed country that has as low a per capita testing rate as Japan and no autopsies for those dying from unknown causes over the age of 65.
When you can compare apples and apples only then can you claim Japan has low numbers.
The same for the daily positivity rate, find a country with as low a testing rate and compare.
So to help Japan's testing per 1,000 is 100, now Germany is over 700 per 1,000 the USA is 1,300 per 1,000 people. Canada is 900 tests per 1,000, Australia 700 test per 1000 people, even Costa Rica beats Japan with 190 tests per 1,000 people.
So find a comparable country with the same low testing and highly developed then tell us the positivity and deaths.

2020 deaths were down last year in Japan as would be expected with precautions and SOE. If many more deaths were from Covid as it’s a pandemic here claimed by some, then the deaths would be higher. We see many accusing the West of using Covid as a cause of death in many to support lockdowns and new draconian laws.
I can see around me in packed central Osaka, life has been as normal almost the whole time and there is no panic, no full morgues.
Antiquesaving
Oh FFS
You still avoided explaining how come covid takes every weekend off.
Antiquesaving
By that statement alone we know you don't understand Covid or what it is.
Covid doesn't kill it is the pneumonia, kidney failures, etc .. that are brought on because of covid infection.
Without testing someone dies from pneumonia then we do not know it was caused by covid.
Last year was a record high for non influenza pneumonia deaths, no autopsies for over 65 no covid tests
How do they know they were not influenza pneumonia? Because nearly ever hospital and clinic can test for it.
So what caused all those pneumonia cases that were negative for influenza?
You want to compare to other countries!
Ok then bbe honest and do a full comparison.
Japan didn't test in the hundreds of thousands like other countries, Japan did not test or have autopsies for those that died suddenly over 65 years of age like other countries did.
You cannot claim low deaths when rules are completely different.
No testing.
No autopsy.
Accepted no cause of death.
When Japan does the same rigorous testing, and autopsies
Then come and tell us how low the deaths from covid-19 are.

The deaths by Covid and severe cases reflect how little Covid has affected Japan compared to most of the West. The low numbers are here for all to see, if people choose to believe they are manipulated it’s up to them. I see no evidence of the government hiding or fudging any numbers.

So I guess you Think the virus takes the weekend off!
That would be the only possible explanation that every weekend fewer and fewer tests are done now down to 1,500 on Sunday.
It would be highly unlikely that suddenly every weekend people are feeling good then Mondays as private labs start up the number of sick goes straight up.
Never heard of heart attacks, the flu, etc.. taking weekends off, every weekend.
But hey I guess if the IOC triumvirate orders numbers to drop the imperial Senate must obey.

Miraculous......

Did you even read that? The methodology used in their estimations is really questionable, and I am being nice here. From their method to estimate the excess of mortality by fitting a spline into time form observations prior to 2020, to the use of Bayesian cascade model to estimate their ratio of excess mortality, there is just a lot of to say about their methodology. Is there any peer-review of this? If not, it has no value whatsoever given the bold claims it does.

Don’t be fooled the numbers are only going to get better overtime for the Olympics...
HBJ
I can't provide any direct evidence, no.
Wasn't one of the SoE predicated on the 7 day average going over 500 cases?
I might be wrong, but I'm sure there was something special about the number 500 in Tokyo.
These sudden drops in testing volume - 1,571 today in Tokyo is pitiful - is sure helping to nudge that 7 day average closer to 500.
Yotomaya
I'm glad the virus takes time off over the weekend. It gives a reason for optimism.
Kanta
Let's presume for a moment that you are correct, and that the testing numbers aren't being manipulated. The positivity rate for 260 cases out of 1,571 tests is 17 percent. That is terrifying.

i have discredited that before with evidence of amount of deaths in Japan in 2020. Also it fails to show any evidence of number manipulation by the Japanese government. That’s what evidence I am seeking.

Now, we can see the fruits of our big adherences to the government issued advice over the last few months. I stand to attention and salute those who are on the front lines battling this disgusting virus. only 260! very very low. and to the many who seeming to want more coronavirus in japan, i cast shame to you. very disappointing

Can someone provide any evidence of manipulation of the numbers of cases please. Many people suggest this, however I am unable to find any source to these claims.

1571 tests.
shameless manipulation and sacrifice of human life to look good and have the olympics

For some reason (the Olympics, wink-wink), daily testing seems to be falling off a cliff.

It's amazing how the numbers nationwide always seem to be in proportion to each other.
Rewind a few days and a number of prefectures were reporting cases in the hundreds. Now when Tokyo drops, they all drop too. It's amazing. Almost unbelievable.
Sven Asai
That doesn’t mean so much. The always in exposure and partying people have already been infected and are out of counting for some weeks or months and the over 10,000 dead also won’t be infected or count again in nearer or farther future.

Well stated. The people who keep parrotting that line are heartless, at best.
Akula
Nationwide numbers will likely be under 2000 today, the lowest for a while. As noted, fewer tests are conducted on weekends - and that does contribute to the low number, but it is still the lowest seem for some time.
Tora
The numbers keeps falling down and down, just like Alice did into the rabbit hole.
falseflagsteve
Great news, ultra low numbers. The measures have worked in not only controlling cases but decreasing them. With vaccines rolling out at top speed we can soon wave goodbye to Covid in Japan.
Yubaru
Oh and the weekly average, per 100,000 population, (116.94) is roughly 5.5 times higher than the national average.
And as nationwide numbers seem to be dropping they are increasing here fast!
Yubaru
Yup and Okinawa had 142, a new record for Monday's, as typically there are only a fraction of tests done on the weekend. Oh two more died as well down here, bring the total to 150 deaths, and well over 16,000 infections.
This does not bode well for this week, as every time that Monday's numbers are "high" the rest of the week, just keeps going up and up!
And to anyone that say's "Oh the death rate is so low!" All I have to say is just be glad it wasn't anyone in your family, a friend, or anyone you knew.

How many tests? Once upon a time this information was provided. Interesting how it no longer is. Didn’t many politicians promise MORE testing just a couple months ago because this was an important tool against the virus. Instead we get less testing because this is the only tool guaranteed to work produce less cases.
All on track for the SOE to be cancelled as scheduled in June, nicely timed for the Olympics as we just cannot have a SOE during the Olympics. The look is just to bad.
Well done Mr numbers man sitting by your fax machine!
Akula
A weekend number, admittedly, but this must be the lowest number for a while. For some reason, new infections seem to be falling off a cliff in a lot of Japan. Great to see!
