So, why are vaccines going to be necessary for a virus which is not harming society any more than influenza is.

Huge efforts are in place to keep the virus from not becoming a terribly public health problem, specially in those areas where there is no room to play with hospital beds. It is harming society.

If you want to compare it with influenza you have to do it on the same conditions, just check how many cases of influenza have been this year, with those measures also impacting it, then you will see why.

Yes because, without testing, you can easily assign the reason of death to something else, like pneumonia.

Well you can easily assign i guess, that's why it's perfectly reasonable for you.

You just have to account for the numbers now if these other causes can make up for the disparity

There it is again:

”for a few months”

This has been the lockdowners mantra since February.

It is not the amount of cases, but how severe the cases and if hospitals are getting overwhelmed. WHO has said they estimate that 10% of the world has been infected with CV19. So, that would mean 780 million cases with 1.4 million deaths. That is a 99.82% survival rate similar to the influenza survival rate.

@zoroto

1) death rates are calculated using a fixed denominator. Most rates are calculated per 100,000. Death rates provide almost no insight with regard to total infection rates. And even then, Japan’s 1.6 death rate is still low compared to other industrialized nations.

https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/mortality

2) I@n is correct. The COVID excess mortality rate in Japan is low. (This is not to say that I agree with the government’s handling of the pandemic).

Actually, Japan's death rate (even with no postmortems) is the 3rd worst in East Asia, after such banana-republics as Indonesia and The Phillipines. So nothing to be proud of.

I know of 5 people infected so far, none have died and like Donald Trump

got better very quickly...

They were fortunate. It kicked my butt and symptoms like a hacking cough, fatigue and shortness of breath lingered for months. I haven't really been the same since.

Wow, powerful argument. Not.

Does anyone think the lack of testing is due to social stigma surrounding COVID?

Very possible, due to the rarity of confirmed cases in most of Japan. It's another incentive to not catch the virus, even more so being a johnny foreigner here.

A young lady near where I live caught it back in May and lived rather recklessly for a few days after being tested positive. So far she has been the only case in this area, and there was quite a lot of anger towards her. Businesses that she visited suffered, and others that she was rumoured to have visited had to take steps to inform people that she hadn't.

Her family moved out of the area last month, and although I can't be sure it was due to the the virus I have no doubt her family was stigmatized badly.

Does anyone think the lack of testing is due to social stigma surrounding COVID? Japanese don't like to be the odd one out. To be outside of the group. To be "meiwaku" to others, to break the "wa" so to speak. Having COVID does all of that. It shouldnt have that much of a stigma, but that'S what it carries in Japan.

Could be people are too afraid to get tested, if they may have come into contact with someone or showing symptoms, so they just "gaman" through it good or bad.

I’ve been on and off trains, out to dinner once or twice a month and the odd club, I haven’t even had a cold for a whole year.

The virus just isn’t that deadly in Japan, is it?

The number of deaths is not overcoming hospitals.People are not falling sick in the streets.

Yet, we were told that the ‘worst’ would happen?

So, why are vaccines going to be necessary for a virus which is not harming society any more than influenza is.

And the vaccine will be mandatory for all people to take?

Certainly, (based on the number of fatalities) it is not necessary to take a vaccine that is not proven to be safe containing synthetic mRNA which will program our cells and will never leave our bodies.

Also, by the time next year comes the virus will most likely mutate into something different ie not infectious to humans.

No need for any vaccine then...

who can you trust to watch your back? These testing are always in the same area as if they have this pandemic undercongrol where everyone else is getting sick in the name of perhaps Tokyo Olympics?

Covid-19 data. From the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

https://stopcovid19.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/en/

Number of hospitalized people reported yesterday: 1302.

Number of hospitalized people reported today: 1281.

Day-over-day change: -21 persons

Mild-moderate and Serious symptoms data. They are already included in the total number of people hospitalized. It should also be remembered that data on severe symptoms are already reflected in the Japan Today article. And there is no need to mention them again in the comments.

Patients hospitalized by COVID in Tokyo Prefecture, per 100,000 inhabitants. Yesterday's data: 9,34

Lock down very necessary.

I don't have any word to say about Japanese government's incompetence.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Oblivious. Getting comical everyday honto.

Japanese men have no time to be tested. Job first. Testing later (maybe) should "kimochi warui" occur .

I imagine not too long now the vaccine will be out and the Rona will be no more.

-9 ( +0 / -9 )

Is that a good or bad number?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Are we seeing excess deaths this year, overall? I'll see if I can find some figures.

Real figures from japanese officials ? :) never

Like, the radiation levels on the olympic parkings in Fukushima, there's a huge gap between official numbers and greenpeace ones.

12 ( +14 / -2 )

Yes because, without testing, you can easily assign the reason of death to something else, like pneumonia.

The number of deaths in Japan is extremely low compared to many countries that test way more.

11 ( +16 / -5 )

The fewer cases are due to the extreme low testing in Japan so any comparison to countries that test way more is pointless.

Please excuse the pointless comparison.

Do these geriatric men even remember what they said 4 days prior?

Isnt the answer obvious? And FYI they aint all geriatric either! They just have collective amnesia and the press here never calls them out on it, leastwise not publicly, as the press people have to eat too!

so few cases is very positive news.

Japan is doing great to beat this insidious virus. so few cases is very positive news.
