Steven McCarthy is wrong in thinking there are 334,381 hospitalisations.

The Japanese reads 入院治療等を要する者 (hospitalizations et cetera). 等 (et cetera) is the key here.

With the more dangerous earlier variants people were automatically hospitalized. Today most people testing positive with the omicron variant are at home, rather than taking up unnecessary hospital beds, or indeed beds in hotels.

@virusrex

With something like 90% of the population vaccinated and with the vaccines somewhat limited ability to reduce infection with omicron, are you really going to tell me that if the remaining unvaccinated suddenly decided to get vaccinated it will shift the outcome of the pandemic? That is the point of my question to Steven.

Cases down and great weather for no masks! Love it! Hope you all enjoyed your weekend!

Not convinced that the masks are doing that much with these latest variants - over in Korea, they did a good job, better than Japan before Omicron came along, and despite everyone wearing masks the same as they do here some 1/3rd of the population had tested positive in the space of three months, and with the positivity rate in testing reaching a massive 65%, it is unlikely that even with the high rate of testing over there that they caught all of the cases. If Japan has done any better with it (and we don't really know if we have due to the lack of testing) then it is likely due to other reasons than mask wearing.

I say that as someone who was enthusiastic about masks in the earlier stages of the pandemic, I wore mine diligently and I was happy to be in a country where wearing a mask or otherwise wasn't a political statement.

Scientific reports have clearly demonstrated masks can reduce importantly transmission, this completely contradict what you say. Your understanding of how masks work is very mistaken, viruses do not get only stopped mechanically, nor they fly around as viral particles but contained in much bigger droplets.

This is bunkum. Unless the masks are N95 and are properly fitted - which represent a minuscule fraction of mask wearers, they have very little effect. You know this, so are just being disingenuous. Graphs show that introducing mask mandates did not have any real effect on the virus spreading. Waves subsided by themselves or artificially with lockdowns of caring degrees only resurge. Not even your beloved vaccines have had much effect in slowing it down.

Go on, see if you can guess when mask mandates were introduced.

SOME Japanese people have sometimes worn masks.

I'd say a VAST majority have mostly been inclined to OFTEN wear masks, especially when the air is generally contaminated with pollen and/or pathogens, and when can't be &rsed to put on makeup.

How long have you lived here? I've been here for most of the last two decades, and at any time before COVID no more than 10% or so would be wearing masks at any one time, maybe a few more on high pollen days. In any case, those masks actually work against pollen, but they have very little effect against viruses, which are far smaller and just slip through or around the masks.

They a large number MAY have been inclined to often wear masks, but most didn't actually do so most of the time. To claim a vast majority is really stretching things.

Everywhere I go is incredibly busy as people go out and enjoy the wonderful weather. We see life continuing as pre Covid for the vast majority, a very small minority hold unnecessary fears about the situation, hopefully they will be ok soon.

Ive Been suffering from Covid issues since January

Brain Fog

Heart Palpitations

confusion

depression

chest pain

migraines

I’m lucky because I don’t have It as bad as some others but I don’t seem to feel it’s getting better either. Meanwhile the world is passing me by. Some have been sick since the beginning of the pandemic, long Covid isn’t just for the elderly and those with comorbidities there are a lot of athletes that are impacted and people in their 30s and 40s. Stay safe. Yes I’m vaccinated but it didn’t help me so much.

News flash, long before Covid came along , Japanese people have always worn masks.

Correction: SOME Japanese people have sometimes worn masks.

It reflects the fact that over 320,000 people who should be in a building we know as a hospital but can’t be because there’s not that many available.

This isn't a fact, it's fiction. Only a small proportion of these people need to be in hospital. Most people get over it just fine at home. And if most of Japan's doctors decided to treat patients in the early stages with certain medications, most of the COVID patients inside hospital and out would recover very quickly.

Problem is, most of them are still wearing masks.

not a problem =)

Everywhere I go is incredibly busy as people go out and enjoy the wonderful weather.

Me too. Problem is, most of them are still wearing masks. And they'll continue to do so until some authority figure tells them in very specific terms that they can go about life without wearing a mask.

Those half-baked comments about being safe to remove your mask outdoors if keeping your distance from others will be ignored because most people won't want to be the first in their social group to ditch the mask.

Their choice to not get vaccinated has literally zero impact on you, or anyone, except themselves.

That is not true, vaccination reduces the spreading of the disease so anybody choosing not to vaccinate can have an effect on public health.

Has anyone here tried to correlate the number of antivaxers in the population to covid cases and deaths?

Or anyone seen a study like that?

Just curious

It sure would be great to see a steady decline in new cases. This up down up down roller coaster we’re on just won’t work . With total actual hospitalizations as reported by the jov being :

Hospitalizations 334,381

Change from previous day -1,699

It is also nice to see a net drop in the number of people actually hospitalized. Despite what some want to claim, there can’t be a drop in the number of “total cases.” Hopefully, this new week will be much better than the last. The weather should allow for more outdoor activities which would also help. Perhaps the jgov could come up with program to encourage the minority of anti everything clan to join the responsible majority and get vaccinated, maybe give them a lunch voucher or something. And those that refuse , put a “zero Covid” policy on them. They might just wanna come around then . When volunteering to do the right thing is out of the question, make it a rule with consequences for defying it.

Patently false information…. Earlier variants of Covid were NOT more dangerous than omicron… Omicron had and continues to be the deadliest variant of Covid in Japan to date. And that is with the masses vaccinated. A tiny fraction of the population were vaccinated when alpha and delta were running wild yet omicron killed more people the 1st 3 months of this year than the next top 3 months combined. Just the facts.
