I wish the article writers would stop reporting "ups" and "downs" from the previous day. It is meaningless.

Instead, they should report the amount from the previous week (same day of the week).

Fortunately the linked document has more useful information such as the change of the 7-day moving average (which today is 189%, quite a steep increase).

The numbers show that the vaccines are working as the majority catching covid are younger people who haven't been vaccinated yet.

@Fiddlers, the trouble is, we don't know, because of suppressed testing, which doesn't give the experts enough data to really suggest causal links. As things stand, vaccination in the time of Delta is to bring down your risk of serious illness and death. It currently seems that both vaccinated and unvaccinated can get infected and pass on infection. This means that a much lower number of the under-65's are ending up in ICU or dying, but on the other hand, as the virus outbreak surges, more and more younger unvaccinated are getting symptomatic illness and getting sicker, so hospitals are filling up. The government response is to make it harder to get into hospital.

Of course the priority is to get as many people vaccinated as possible. Everyone is important, but maybe they should prioritise the vulnerable under-65's (there are millions of these), and people in their 40's and 50's, then people in their 20's and 30's, followed by teenagers.

We are paying the price for the government's incompetence and stubbornness over vaccination - not preparing properly for mass vaccination, not approving vaccines and starting faster, not using the AZ stocks they had, not adapting logistics when they saw there were problems with their system. Not cancelling the Olympics and throwing all the resources at their disposal at tackling the pandemic.

@P. Smith

absolutely not true. And if you had traveled overseas during the pandemic (yes, some of us reluctantly have to do it) you’d see how strict Japan’s quarantine is.

At the very least, a person who travels overseas and comes back to japan will have taken 3 PCR tests. I underwent 6 PCRs. How many people in Tokyo has even got one?

and there’s a much higher chance to get infected on the subway in Tokyo than at a random combini where you could possibly meet an overseas traveler (whose number has been limited more than 2 weeks before the explosion in COVID-19 cases).

14 ( +16 / -2 )

No worries, Suga solved the issue.by telling people who have coronavirus to stay home and die so they dont fill up the hospital. Keep consuming, good citizens.

14 ( +16 / -2 )

Today number at 3709 - this number is 861 more than last week (last week number was 2848) - the growth in numbers is slowing down perhaps?

No they just tested 2,000 fewer people than last Monday.

So actually a higher positivity rate.

13 ( +24 / -11 )

Looks like Tokyo is having a party out there in pandemic. The cases are only increasing

9 ( +14 / -5 )

When will people get it ( outside of this string of comments) that numbers ALWAYS drop Sunday and Monday!! Then they skyrocket on Tuesday!!

Saturday fewer places are open to test thus lower number Sunday. Has anyone tried finding a clinic open Sunday?? They are closed !! Thus the huge drop on Monday.

it always seems to me they make a big deal out of the lower numbers Sunday and Monday and I feel they think the downward trend will hold!! It never does!!

this is not a shock to me!!!

Japan has fully vaccinated 38 Million people. They did that in basically 3 months!

Yeah and nearly 15 million of those were done by corporations and universities.

Private companies and universities were given 50 million doses they have used up 40 million and will finish the rest in about 2 weeks or less.

They started long after the government and got more vaccinated faster.

Once the private businesses stop vaccination, lest see if the 1 million vaccines a day holds up.

Lest be honest here, the private companies did a far better far more organised job than the government.

Companies like my daughter's didn't wait for the silly vouchers.

They vaccinated and said " if and when you get the voucher bring it.

My daughter was vaccinated 2 weeks before getting her vouchers and would still be waiting like her brother because our ward is out of vaccine and hasn't started under 30 yet.

Izakaya owners/employees, restaurant owners/employees etc.

I could go on here. My mate runs a casual Chinese restaurant in central Tokyo. He was barely above water last time I saw him. You reminded me to drop him a line to see how he’s doing.

He’s very bothered about the numbers.

@bitwizard

We’ve had people claiming that long Covid is quite trivial affecting very few.

We are still waiting for links to back this up. We had a few irrelevant ones but they were deservedly dismissed and ridiculed.

Unfortunately, many prefer narrative over evidence. This is very distasteful on issues as serious as this.

Just not good enough.

I have 2 friends who flew into Haneda, had to quarantine 14 days in an airport hotel because they did not live in Tokyo. The trouble is, they were allowed to wander the terminal building mingling with other people - this was a daily occurrence. One of them I did a video chat with as he walked around the terminal. He asked the hotel if he was allowed, and they told him they were unsure but it was probably ok as long as he did not leave the terminal building. In fact, they said he was not allowed to dine in the hotel dining room for meals (as he was quarantining), so he had no option but to go out into the terminal for his meals. This was like 3 months ago, so the rules nay be stricter now, but this was not the case when they flew in.

We all know that, it is the "we need to live life", " covid is beaten" " deaths are low" tiny minority that seem to deni that fact like they deni just about all reality regarding the pandemic.

I'm not sure if it's denial so much as colossal egotism. The subtext with the posters you refer to is "as long as my life is not inconvenienced, I don't care one bit about how many people get infected, sick, or die".

5K incoming baby. Olympics rock. Go Suga. Thanks for the 800 bucks last year. So generous.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

The spread from the 4 day holiday(7/23 thru 7/25) will likely show up latter half of this week and Tokyo could well see over 5,000 cases. I hope this does not happen but nothing surprises me anymore. I'm getting my second shot this week and I'll continue my routine to lower my risk of infection, as I have done for more than a year, even after being fully vaxxed.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

What's the point in comparing it to the previous day all the time.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Permanent Cognitive impairment is a well documented side effect of covid-19 at this point. People continue to break this down into a matter of life vs death while ignoring the lasting side effects completely. At the end of the day, your goal should be to not get infected and not infect others! Whether you live or die from covid, there is a fair chance that it will have a lasting, potentially life-long negative impact on your health. The level of cognitive dissonance required to simply ignore these well documented lasting side effects is unreal.

3 ( +10 / -7 )

@jimizo

There are countless academic studies that prove the lasting side effects of Covid-19.

This one is from Oxford, or is that not good enough for you?

https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2021.577529/full

Imagine a world where scientific fact was trumped by the confirmation bias of the selectively uninformed...oh wait...that's the world we live in. Nevermind.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

@bitwizard

I’m sorry if you misunderstood me. I’m not playing down long Covid. I see it a serious issue.

Unfortunately, there are some who are all narrative or very selective when asking us to look at the science.

Long Covid is very inconvenient to their narrative.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

@Jimizo

So you're saying that this scientific study has been debunked by esteemed scientists who have proven otherwise?

Who exactly made any such study the object of ridicule?

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpsy/article/PIIS2215-0366(21)00084-5/fulltext

This contains all the details of a study performed in April 2021. I don't feel that linking a long term Scientific study showing the link between covid 19 and cognitive impairment is "narrative" based or biased in any way. It's literally all facts and it's about as rational/objective as you can get.

People are strange,

Comments about Moderna causing a stronger reaction so they plan on avoiding it.

Well seeing I do understand a bit about how vaccines work.

I actually actively chose Moderna because odds are that if it causes the immune system to have a strong reaction it is also more likely to mean the vaccine has done it's job and done it well.

As we are seeing certain people that got Pfizer very early on are already seeing the immunity waning and will need a booster after only 6 months.

I am taking the view that if Moderna triggers a stronger response that perhaps that will also lead to a longer time between the 2 doses and a future booster.

No data yet on this but we already know Pfizer for older people looks like a 6 month booster.

Even if a test is negative the reason for the 14-day quarantine is because it can still happen.

Tests.

Agreed, but my guess is those 3709 cases in Tokyo were 99% domestic related. Any argument on that?

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Mind if I ask where you got the 11 deaths

Right here yesterday!

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Not really @zichi.

which is specificity and sensitivity are two distinct concept in statistics.

PCRs tend to many more false positives than false negatives. False negatives, with the PCR are VERY rare.

Whoops, I meant a much lower number of the over-65's are ending up in ICU or dying. And also a much smaller proportion of ICU cases are over 65's.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Yesterday, August 2, there were 5 deaths. I understand that deaths tend to follow cases by about a week or so, but so far there's no evidence of that with the current spike in cases. That's the silver lining.

You should check your information better.

On August 1st 5 deaths on the 2nd 11 more than twice the day before.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

@joffy

While deaths being down is obviously a good thing, the parallel concern has and continues to be the long-term effects of the virus on a person's health. I constantly see this broken down into a life vs. death thing, but if you suddenly die from a stroke 5 years from now or have to live with permanent cognitive impairment due to the severity and lasting symptoms of covid, wouldn't that be bad as well? I am sure there are those among us who are resilient enough to get infected and "bounce back" with little to no side effects. However, those of us who do not may end up suffering long term effects deal with health problems for the rest of their lives.

Article could be shorter.

Nationwide, the number of reported cases as of 6:30 p.m. was 12,014.

The number of coronavirus-related deaths reported nationwide was 10.

So some 0.08%

Should we be afraid?

You really haven't a clue how the numbers above work do you.

You honestly think the 10 that died are from the 12,014 new cases, because this is the second time you posted the same type of comment.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Herd immunity.

This will only work via vaccine because as we are clearly seeing and as predicted by most competent virologist.

Immunity to covid-19 is not permanent.

So natural from having had covid will eventually be lost.

The same for Vaccines and why it has been said all along that the vaccine will be more like the annual influenza vaccine and not like the measles vaccine.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Nothing wrong with that. Further proof that capitalism rules.

Did you just ignore the fact that they have only 10 million doses left.

Once those are given the corporations stop all vaccinations.

So back to slow mismanaged government only

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

No. tested conducted on Sunday - 2,811 .. this literally doesn't add up for over the last week and it really is apparent in the data given from last 2 Sunday's. Makes zero sense.

I wonder if all those tested positive have symptoms.

I do not imagine getting tested, ie paying for a test if no symptom, unless being required by a company, or for symptoms

Being vaccinated doesn’t magically release you from the quarantine requirements.

Do you know what the quarantine requirements are? I do, because I have exited and entered Japan more than 5 times in the last year.

If you read posts here you would see people describing their experiences going food shopping during the quarantine period.

I actually asked about shopping to the health center that called me. They said if that is the only way I can get food and essentials then it can't be helped, and they suggested to use stores where you can make contactless payments. How do you think returnees here eat for the 14 day period?

Many convenience stores, for example, since I believe you mentioned it, have a vinyl sheet separating the cashier from the customer, and the customer makes the payment into a machine, gets his own change, and own receipt, thereby having no contact. Amazing concept; maybe not as interesting as adverbs and adjectives.

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

They raised the number of tests; thus, they have more documented infections.

Are travellers required to finish quarantine before travelling again.

No.

zichiToday  06:05 pm JST

I don't know the medical science on that point. The variant was introduced by travellers and not domestic cases.

If a test can have a false positive then it can also have a false negative.

Here's the good news ... Phizer's 6 month study of the efficacy of the vaccine is out.

And the bad news? Phizer's 6 month study of the efficacy of the vaccine is out.

For those of us who have even slept through a grad school course in statistics or experiment design, it was a waste of time. This is an embarrassingly blunt attempt to blind us with science. And what's worse, for the most part, they are succeeding.

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

-8 ( +5 / -13 )

The numbers show that the vaccines are working…

That depends on what you mean with working. In short words I would only say, they are partly working , in their intervals of efficacy. You can estimate it yourself. Let’s assume, the vaccine is given in two jabs and works to 50% , reduced because of delta, then you get a result after all people vaccinated twice, 25% fully safe, 50% with a very reduced immunity boost and the remaining 25% are like not vaccinated at all, although they got two jabs. That’s why one can say only that they are partly working, and it also explains why that herd immunity is more a theory than really in reach.

3x the juice in the Moderna which is why it can cause palpitations, fever, night sweats, erectile dysfunction, aches and pains.

Only Pfizer my way so I booked that cocktail.

I hope that vaccine doesn’t cause long term erectile dysfunction. Get well moderna is known as the beast of beast 2nd round

On the bright side, the number is less than 4000.

Less than 5000 too.

The high numbers for the younger people shows that Japan has to vaccinate that age group immediately.
