Unfortunately, I believe there is going to be another lock down if the numbers spiral upwards

There has never been a lockdown in Japan, and there won't be one in the near future. Perhaps you are referring to the SoE?

Either way, I'm pretty sure the Goto Travel thingy will have to put back for a month or two unfortunately.

“Unfortunately, I believe there is going to be another lock down if the numbers spiral upwards (and this is not what I am wishing and or hoping for) this has and seems to be a continuing norm for the Japanese Government.”

@Ashley

Did I miss any lockdown here? Sounds like I just woke up from my nap if there was one please help remind me of it thanks.

I think it is quite good considering the fact

It will all be over in 5 weeks and 6 days.

lets stop the fear-mongering now please this is a big nothing ok nobody is dying

That’s not true, but of course I wish for you remaining under all those nobodies and not the fewer ones who are already dead now.

5 (FIVE) people with problems in a metropolis of 20 million. And the media tell us to panic. Seriously?

0 ( +12 / -12 )

I think we might see another SoE pretty soon - even though I think Omicron is relatively benign, a lot of people are going to get it all at once and so it is inevitable that a lot of people, especially elderly with co-morbidities will need hospitalization. Most will only need a brief stay and I doubt we'll see large numbers clogging up ICUs for weeks on end like in previous waves, but with around 80% of hospitals refusing to accept COVID patients, I can't see us not having some problems between now and Easter. Once the big surge is passed, I expect it to be pretty much over.

What is decreasing? Infections? No way, Omicron is running rampant now. Hospitalizations with severy problems? RIght now FIVE, yes FIVE, and not expect a big change. Maybe up to six on Tuesday, or down to four.

And today my idiot boss sent round an email saying we must not have lunch with friends and colleagues from now on to prevent infection.

But we all have to commute in every day and sit next to each other from morning to night of course. In a room where the windows don't open and it's super-heated all day.

Because COVID can only get you if you're enjoying yourself.

And the media tell us to panic.

They do? I looked around, couldn't find much 'panic', or even 'fearmongering'. Just news. Maybe you are too easily rattled, you should get out and enjoy life a bit more, it's more non-panicky out there than you think.

This link is usually incorporated within the article so we can compare positive cases with test numbers.

Today, with the 81% positivity rate, it seems to have been omitted. I wonder why?

The highest previous Monday number was 3,119 on Aug 16, 2021.

So !?

... until the next variant. You cannot have millions of infections per day without new variants emerging. That's why vaccination is so important.

Of course, there will be new variants but it is unlikely that they will become both more virulent and transmissible. To become more transmissible than delta, Omicron changed the way it infects cells and in doing so, became more viable in the tissues of the upper respiratory tract and less so in the deep lung tissue. This change also is likely the reason why it is much less dangerous (on a case-by case basis) than previous variants. Additionally, although antibody protection provided by vaccination or previous infection wanes over time , t-cell immunity which protects against serious disease seems to be more durable and the Omicron wave is only going to add to that.

There, my friend, the very first line.

-15 ( +1 / -16 )

Surprised 2 years and counting into the pandemic some people have not grasped

the fact that the number of cases will never exceed a few thousand cases in Tokyo and

the country as a whole as tests are capped.

I noticed last Thursday and Friday there were lines of hundreds of people outside the free PCR testing clinic near my house in Osaka. But almost nobody today, strangely.

@Nihon Tora

It is hoped that the virus will weaken or become more commensial with its host over time. That's the idea that Theobald Smith came up with in about 140 years ago. I would love to see that happen.

Doesn't seem to work with influenza and other viruses (polio,small pox, measles, etc) which humanity has been dealing with since humanity became humanity. Mutations which lead to one variant are not a dead end for virulence & transmissibility, and do not preclude additional mutations from happening which send things into a completely new evolutionary life history.

Ok. Have fun commenting… or keep on worrying if that’s what you’re doing. Above all, stay safe. Am

back to my beers.

-11 ( +2 / -13 )

@iraira21

of course, it is not impossible that a future COVID variant could increase in both virulence and transmissibility, nor is it impossible for influenza, the common cold or any other commonly circulating virus to do likewise. I suggest we worry about that if and when it actually happens.

You obviously have a theory, don’t be coy.

@Nihon Tora

Didn’t we kinda already wait for a lot of this to happen before responding to it?

Don’t take any of what I said to mean “Lock the world down until all viruses are destroyed”. We need optimism, but cautious optimism. And I realize that means something different to each individual.

Okinawa numbers have already peaked and started to decline a bit. Tokyo is about 1-2 weeks behind, so expect rising numbers for 2 more weeks. I don’t think another SOE is needed if it’s starting to subside by then.

@Derek Grebe sounds like you need a new boss.

@NorthernLife - no argument here, or from pretty much anyone in my office. The man is a tool. But he's a Japanese man in his 60's who went to university with the CEO, so I am not holding my breath for any immediate reforms in the status quo.

Sadly a few coworkers of mine are currently hospitalized with corona and they all are infected with the delta type here in Hiroshima.

For a while I believed it's only omikron around and the other mutations are gone, based on all the omikron news.

I hope you and your families stay healthy.

Risk from Omicron to young. Healthy people is very low, do you have any data that contradicts this?

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Quality reply @Bob. But, do you really expect anything else after almost 2 years of the same response?
