Tokyo reports 399 coronavirus cases; record-high 719 in Osaka

48 Comments

The Tokyo metropolitan government on Tuesday reported 399 new cases of the coronavirus, up 150 from Monday. Osaka recorded a record-high 719 cases, surpassing Tokyo for the seventh day in a row.

In Tokyo, the number (226 men and 173 women) is the result of 4,405 tests conducted on April 3. By age group, people in their 20s (116 cases) and their 30s (96) accounted for the highest number, while 49 cases were aged 60 and over.

The number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms in Tokyo is 44, down two from Monday, health officials said. The nationwide figure is 451.

Nationwide, the number of reported cases was 2,654. After Osaka and Tokyo, the prefectures with the most cases were Hyogo (276), Saitama (116), Aichi (11), Miyagi (103), Okinawa (98), Nara (78), Hokkaido (63), Chiba (62), Kyoto (55), Fukuoka (51), Ehime (43), Fukushima (26), Yamagata (25), Nagano (25) and Tochigi (24).

The number of coronavirus-related deaths reported nationwide was 28.

once again, so low numbers. mina-san, ganbatte kudasai!

funny to downvote fact you can check yourself with a calculator

Not bad at all. I honestly thought Tokyo would be approaching the 1000 count taking into account the incubation period since the SOE expired.

Meanwhile those of us who cannot telework or WANT to stay cooped up at home, are accepting the reality over one year in, that mass vaccination is nowhere in sight and mass testing is NEVER going to happen and that we have to get on with life as much as is possible.

Amywhere, I'm off for a beer! Have a safe evening peeps.

No it makes no sense to say that because it's meaningless to consider just a single day. Rather you must take an average on a given period. Currently, the positivity rate in Tokyo is 4.3% calculated from 7-day moving average.

Well, news flash, they still test only a fraction of possible cases. With symptoms, you can't get tested at the private sites, and to be tested at the health centers, your symptoms need to be really quite rough, including proving you've encountered someone who has covid, spent over 15mins in the close vicinity of them, without wearing a mask...

Agree but it's mainly to balance the raw cases number often considered here with any reference.

(btw 7-day moving average is always 2 days late to compare)

@Vinke - Well aware and agree with you. I'm assuming at least a factor of 10.

Why is people getting sick news. It's a pretty lame story. Now if 399 people were dying directly from a virus everyday in tokyo that would be a story for concern.

Japan paying the price for a slow approval process and a slow roll out of vaccines.

10 ( +15 / -5 )

such a tiny number - we should be proud of ourselves.

-12 ( +6 / -18 )

@Reckless - I'm with you. Many friends abroad have now had either Pfizer or AZ and all are ok. Most felt a little rough a day or two after AZ but fine after that. I'd take either or Moderna right NOW if offered. Japan really need to get a move on.

12 ( +16 / -4 )

719 in Osaka today - highest ever there in 1 day. The strains are here in Japan and spreading. I hope Tokyo isn’t next to see major increases due to the new strains but it might be inevitable......

10 ( +12 / -2 )

Incredible that people protest about a vaccine that has an infinitesimal chance to harm you versus Covid that has killed 2.5 million in a year even after many nations have taken precautions to minimize the fatalities. Not to mention tens of millions with ongoing health conditions brought on by covid that take months to clear up if at all. For all the millions of people already vaccinated only a handful of people have been reported to have had an issue and none is yet conclusively proven to be the fault of the vaccine.

Honestly getting vaccinated is clearly the best way to reduce deaths and to enable survival for those who get covid after being vaccinated. For every half a million covid deaths maybe one from vaccines (if proven in the future) If you want to lessen your chances to survive then by all means do not take the vaccine but be ready to face longer restrictions on travel and socializing if you make that choice.

I will take the shot in the arm as soon as I it is my turn.

Osaka has been increasing the number of daily PCR tests. Around double a month ago! How do they get away with it?

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Some people here are still under the impression that the more people you test the more infections you will find and that is not the case. Why waste manpower and supplies and time testing people that show absolutely no symptons...and if you are going to claim that it will be proof that many more are contaminated and sick...then why are not hospital numbers running into the tens of thousands for people needing to be in isolation?

-18 ( +3 / -21 )

I don't understand the people on here who repeatedly talk about how Japan is in a good situation. It's not even really about the number of deaths, though I doubt we can know for sure what the COVID-19 death count here is when likely many get labeled as anything other than COVID-19 or COVID-19-caused complications.

The reality is that this virus causes long-lasting damage in people of all ages, including those in formerly good health. I'm proof of that. I was a healthy, fit, "young person" before it hit. I'm still facing symptoms and physical damage even over a year later and have come to accept my new "norm". How are so many people taking it this lightly? It's amazing and also pisses me off. What I would give to trade my now horrible health with the ignorance and blind optimism of any one of these foolish naysayers.

Meanwhile cities with four times less the population of Tokyo are doing 40,000 tests a day, while Tokyo barely manages to pass 5,000 tests a day, let alone 10,000 or more...How on Earth are we getting away with this charade? It's a shame the rest of the world doesn't know what's going on here. Otherwise I think the Olympics would be a no-go for most.

The point would be to catch the asymptomatic ones and the ones with mild symptoms, because even as such, you're still spreading the virus around you, possibly making others severely ill. When caught, these people would then isolate at their homes (no need for hospitals) for 14 days, work remotely. It would slow down/stop the spread, ease the burden on hospitals, also making it possible for people who are waiting treatments for other ailments as well to get treatment (many surgeries etc. are postponed because of covid-19).

15 ( +17 / -2 )

Thumbs up @Vinke for your thoughts. But look at the stats for major hospitalizations. They are so low and that is good because the virus spread is low. With that reasoning they are able to use most hospital beds for others with all other human ailments.

-18 ( +1 / -19 )

funny to downvote fact you can check yourself with a calculator

People downvote because it gets old obsessing with the positivity rate when they are only testing people with bad symptoms. And in the case of private test centers, negative results won't get reported at all, but positive results might get reported, if the infected person visits a proper doctor afterwards (as they are supposed to do).

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

I just looked up available hospital beds researved for bad covid patients. They are a very small percentage. Under 5% And they are not full. So testing unecessarily is a waste of time and money,

-10 ( +2 / -12 )

@therougou

They're only selectively testing people with bad symptoms, though. There are many out there with bad symptoms being refused a test no matter where they go, even when they have been to a confirmed cluster infection site before coming down ill. The reality is that test suppression is a real thing here that even fellow Japanese are complaining about.

It doesn't help to panic, but it does help not to be a selfish tosser who thinks he or she is above COVID-19 either. I'm afraid for other young people here because they have been told again and again that it can't affect them, and that's simply not true. Not to mention, young people presenting with severe symptoms are the most likely to be turned away from testing or treatment. I had to go to over four different hospitals over thirteen times before I was taken seriously, and I still was not tested or treated. Even having been in a confirmed cluster infection site before coming down with all the symptoms of COVID-19 at severe levels. I thought that was it - just left to die just like that.

I know a number of others who ended up in the same situation as me. We ended up finding each other specifically because of our situations here. It's damned sad that so few know how hard it is to genuinely get tested and helped here during this time. And all because of the Olympics and saving face. When we see these reports of daily numbers, we now automatically assume it's at least 10 times more than what they're saying. 339? Sure. Out of a ridiculous 4,405 tests. If they tested properly, we'd know the true spread.

Koike promised 2 days ago to increase testing. Nobody quizzed her about not honoring her previous promise to ramp up testing to 65,000 test a day, this like the previous is nothing but fake promise,

@Gwylly

Thank you, that means a lot. I'm so sorry for your friends. I can attest to the endless shortness of breath even when just making a few steps. That and the neurological symptoms (such as the brain fog) are truly insane. I never imagined a virus like this could be possible. It's like there is no part of the body it does not adversely affect, often in horrendous ways...It truly is ten times worse than any flu. Please take good care of yourself, too!

@drlucifer

Yes, the empty promises are ridiculous. But even more ridiculous is that no one calls her or the others out for lying again and again. I really wish this was international news so that perhaps there would be enough pressure on us to finally start testing properly. I thought that the insistence on the Olympics would mean we have to test, or no one would want to show up.....But alas, we get to slide by pretending like we've magically defeated the virus by our superior "maindo". Who knows? Maybe Koike will magically stand by her word this time. Take good care!

I think the Japanese leadership is doing great. I would for all of them if I could, but won't. I like and believe in change.

@skip

Out of interest, if you live in Japan, have had covid symptoms for over a year.

And this is a website well known amongst English speakers in Japan

Why haven't you posted before?

Sorry about your situation. I just meant that the positivity rate is expected to be high the way they are testing. Add that to the fact that the flu is almost non-existent due to mass vaccination late last year, and chances are you will have covid if the symptoms are bad.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

So these are the numbers of today’s propaganda.

Who still believe in such fabricated numbers made by low tests?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Feeling for you Skipp. Had an unrelated life-and-death blood-clotting event (masked under pneumonia) not too long ago myself, couldn't walk three steps for shortness of breath, then suddenly lights out and onto ECMO for three weeks. Never been the same since. Little by little the body finds ways to heal, though. Hang in there, and thanks for posting.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

@carpslidy

I don't see why that matters, though? I posted on Japan Times before they started removing the comments section. Eventually you get exhausted when you run into so many people who don't believe it's a problem or think Japan is doing a great job. You can only tell your story so many times. Plus, sometimes you have to step away just to focus on your health, because the lack of responsibility or care about the situation by many people does indeed get overwhelming. After saying my piece here tonight (which I only did because I do check the numbers each day and still see one too many naysayers in the comments section), I probably won't bother for a while again after.

Take it from someone who's been through it - the visit to the bar or a restaurant with friends, or Go To Travel discounts.....it's just not worth the health risks. Someone in their twenties now living like a sick, elderly person even over a year later...I have so many regrets. I didn't know the shop in my town was a cluster infection site. Otherwise I would never have gone. I still don't understand why they dared to announce it was a cluster infection zone but refused to test so many of us who were there and got sick. I can't understand it for the life of me. And it is such an insult that they claim their cluster-tracing method was such a success when they didn't even bother testing or supporting people who got sick after being in the cluster.

@therougou

I see, thank you for the clarification. Cheers!

@nandakandamanda

Just saw this! God, I'm sorry - that's so horrible. We have to believe the body gets better little by little, even if it takes time. I wish you all the best and hope you are able to keep safe and happy in the days ahead, even though it's such a difficult time. Be good to yourself!

You see how much Yoshimura was sweating in the last news interview? He simply doesn't know what to blame it on now that he might have to look for actual causes. Can't keep blaming it on people out drinking (especially if you lifted the SOE early so people could go out in full force and do that... forgetting of course that the virus doesn't care if it's 1:00 p.m. lunch rush or just past 8:00 p.m. at a restaurant. When Edano asked him the other day why we should trust him and if he'd stand behind his beliefs and resign if the "Manbo" crap didn't work, he got extremely angry and defensive. Why? He knows it means NOTHING. He was praying and waiting that he wouldn't have to make up some new light color after the unique "Osaka Method" went to red.

...is it called the Osaka Olympics? No, therefore no need to keep case numbers so low

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Numbers are low in Tokyo because they tested only 4,405 people.

Maybe Osaka did not get the memo to test just a few people. lol
