The death rate was low for previous variants because Omicron is the deadliest variant of Covid in Japan to date.

Yes although the ifr of the other variants were higher, overall death rates were lower compared to omicron's

, in Europe most countries have only gotten to the point where seasonal influenza is causing more hospitalizations/deaths than covid19 just recently,

influenza also at epidemic levels now?

that's concerning

Fact-check …. The death rate was low for previous variants because Omicron is the deadliest variant of Covid in Japan to date. It’s a good thing that although slow…. That the jgov worked to get the vast majority of responsible people vaccinated when they did . These daily numbers of new cases aren’t falling…. Unless all you consider is Tokyo …. All this talk of nutrition and better diets is just more patently false information. The mortality rate in Japan and the United States are both just above 9%… with hundreds of thousands of people currently in the hospital, in hotels or worse… at home recovering or dying , it’s still beyond time for the naysaying anti everything crowd to get with the program …. Also , “herd immunity “ doesn’t exist with Covid…. Hence , it’s unattainable…. And NO…. Getting infected does NOT provide better protection than the vaccines and further adds more stress to the already overstretched healthcare system.

@pepepopo

Probably not quite yet, in Europe most countries have only gotten to the point where seasonal influenza is causing more hospitalizations/deaths than covid19 just recently, and they are a few months ahead.

when I made that comment I had the Tokyo daily total of “one person hospitalized with severe symptoms” in mind.

It does not prevent 100%, but it does offer much more protection than any of the vaccines.

That is false, heavily symptomatic infection gives immunity comparable to what a vaccine offers (except with much higher risks) but mild or asymptomatic infection does not.

I suspect the actual infection rate is at least 10X greater...

At least 10 times 10% would mean 100% of the people were already infected, this is easily contradicted by the number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths that happen every single day. You have been repeating this since 2020, it is obviously not congruent with the real situation.

Ian

The death rate was low for previous variants due to higher fitness levels in the population and very low obesity, plus better nutrition than in the West.

Of course the cases are in the tens of millions in Japan.

Example 65% of 126M population multiplied by .0013 omicron ifr would translate to roughly 100k deaths if my calculations are correct.

If you can find 70thousand bodies lying somewhere that would be acceptable basia

Any basis at all for this figure?

Having had Covid does little to protect against getting it again.

It does not prevent 100%, but it does offer much more protection than any of the vaccines.

In America 60% of people have had Covid while in Japan it’s only 10%.

Only 6.4% of Japanese have had a confirmed SARSCoV2 infection, but nobody actually believes (or should believe) that this is anywhere close to the actual rate of infection. I suspect the actual infection rate is at least 10X greater...

Having had Covid does little to protect against getting it again. Million of people have had it more than once. In America 60% of people have had Covid while in Japan it’s only 10%. Japan’s safety protocols must have something to do with it.

Record numbers again in Okinawa and Miyazaki.

The majority of people in Japan have probably already had COVID (mainly Omicron and later) without realizing and actually have nothing to worry about. Unfortunately, because nobody gets tested, they are instead terrified, cowering behind masks and border controls, from a disease that they’ve already had and recovered from.

there would probably be more flu patients hospitalized with severe symptoms than Covid patients at this point….

What's really there to be alarmed about?
