Blimey, what happened in Gifu? Almost tripling overnight. A few weeks ago them and Nagano were in single digits.

Up 1,415 from yesterday. That's quite the jump.

Good to see JT showing number diff from previous day but also from last week same day - thank you for the same

But today the number of tests data is missing - maybe add later?

17 ( +21 / -4 )

Somehow the published numbers don't add up... Maybe you will notice

3 ( +6 / -3 )

If I'm not mistaken, then this is the highest number for a Tuesday so far. Big increase from Tuesday last week (and thanks, JT, for adding that), but that figure was impacted by the public holiday on Monday, so 3 Aug may be a more meaningful comparison. On that day the number was 3,709. No change in the upward trend in sight, it seems.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

Spoiler alert! We hit a new nationwide record today. Countryside carrying the weight.

6 ( +12 / -6 )

I reckon if they gave us a figure of three tomorrow and then eighteen thousand the day after, nobody would even bat an eyelid any more.

12 ( +16 / -4 )

To infinity and beyond

12 ( +14 / -2 )

This is terrible again. If my statistics are correct, (and they were up until another news service stopped adding the total number of cases), to date for this month Tokyo has already 68,503 cases. There have been since the pandemic started 286,471 cases. That means 23.91% of all cases have occurred this month.

And a question, please. Why can't the government declare a lockdown? I understand it is in the constitution, but can't they amend that? Clearly, the state of emergency isn't working.

Deaths will remain capped, as the elderly and those with underlying conditions have been mostly vaccinated. The increase in case numbers is mostly amongst young people, who are unlikely to suffer serious illness. In any case, the death rate will not be as high as in the US, etc. because of the low rates of obesity. It's a waste of time to report case numbers at this stage - just record the deaths, remove the toothless SOE restrictions on business and move forward.

Tokyoites went home during Obon.

Blimey, what happened in Gifu? Almost tripling overnight. A few weeks ago them and Nagano were in single digits.

I tell you what’s happening in Gifu,I live in Gifu city and most people who are not familiar with the prefecture identify it with Takayama which is in a pretty isolated and far area from any major city.

Now you have Gifu city which has over a half million population including it’s suburbs and high it’s literally on the border with Aichi prefecture.

From Gifu to Nagoya by regular train JR is just a 20 minutes ride which makes it a bedtown of Nagoya and many people commute to work in Nagoya in a daily basis.

Plus for some idiotic rules the Aichi prefecture and Gifu prefecture local governments this time didn’t work together.

Aichi prefecture is again in a quasi quarantine zone which means they stopped serving alcohol etc.

Which Gifu still in running on a normal basis.

So you got a lot of the Nags weekend drinker coming over to Gifu city in Tamamya-chou.

And there you have the spikes of infected in Gifu.

A mixture of incompetence of coordinating together with common Tokai prefectures and the deaf ears of the local people to avoid crowded places.

What a mess!

Look the lockdown talk is a waste of time.

Really no need for a lockdown.

All it would take is for the government to stop lying, cancel the Paralympics to make a point start testing large numbers of people in the hundreds of thousands in Tokyo alone more in the rest of the country.

Once people stop seeing 2,962, 4,377 cases in a prefecture of 14 million but start seeing 20,000, 30,000 40,000 a day positive cases just in Tokyo, they will realise how things really are and do as they are asked.

Even companies that now refuse work from home will feel the pressure to change because it will look bad if not.

That one single step would make the biggest difference.

All this would achieve is over-burdening the already fragile medical system. What is the difference if there is 5,000 cases recorded or 50,000 cases - the number of serious cases/deaths doesn't change. It's a waste of time and effort; it's much better to focus efforts on vaccination and the few hundred serious cases.

It doubled here in Miyazaki.

from 50 max before Obon to 111 today.

Numbers to go big nationwide I reckon.

Who would’ve thought with all the people from other prefectures coming here that it would’ve gone up.

clueless.

@reckless

I am getting whiplash watching the numbers go up and down and up.

here’s an easy fix for you - stop being so fixated on ‘the numbers’ !

RecklessToday  05:18 pm JST

I am getting whiplash watching the numbers go up and down and up. Clearly the number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms is concerning. I guess the Obon/Olympics double punch will give the virus traction.

Yes, nothing spreads a virus quite like those stadiums packed with spectators.

One thing for sure, it's not the rush hour train I had to squeeze on this morning. No siree!

19 ( +21 / -2 )

@William77, well explained that man, appreciated.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

The nationwide figure was 1,646, up 43 from Monday.

These numbers aren’t worth the cyber bytes they’re inscribed on. If the virus is as easily transmissible as it’s supposed to be and in view of the fact there are no lockdowns anywhere, that this is a holiday time of year with schools closed and お盆里帰リ in full swing; a derisory 43 up is neither here nor there.

My pleasure, and sorry for the many mistakes, but typing on a small phone with my big hands sometimes is pretty hard:)

Steve

just record the deaths, remove the toothless SOE restrictions on business and move forward.

How do you record deaths to covid without testing the death.

21 ( +25 / -4 )

The only reason some people want a lockdown is so they can wear their misery like a badge. Maybe have a good moan to their overseas friends. "Our lockdown is sooo much worse than your lockdown. Look at us - we're in dire straits the lot of us - three sad emojis".

There is and has never been a practical need for a lockdown in Tokyo. The people calling for one have been wrong again and again since the pandemic started. Are you not tired of being wrong all the time? Are you going to apologise for being wrong all the time?

-13 ( +16 / -29 )

Number of tests in Tokyo is totally irrelevant since a very long time. And why focusing on Tokyo prefecture, it's only 10% of Japan.

Better to see the nationwide numbers of Covid hospitalizations. Monday number was 157,956, always on the rise. I wonder what is the capacity limit.

Today around 35 deaths, also rising slowly.

We can only wait to see the next dumb decisions of Suga&Co.

Is a panic mode possible in Japan ?

8 ( +11 / -3 )

I've noticed most of the convenience stores have stopped providing free alcohol hand disinfectant at the entrance. No wonder this virus is now spreading uncontrolled.

2 ( +10 / -8 )

My mistake, around 45.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

and up 1,765 from last Tuesday.

Finally, the only stat that matters.

7 ( +11 / -4 )

Commodore and Steve

Great points both of you, using common sense to understand the situation.

We are doing ok, the vaccines are rolling out speedily to protect the elderly and others that wish to take them.

Over 100 deaths in UK yesterday despite higher vaccination rates and lower population proving that the poor health and rampant obesity of nations in the west is to blame for the high death tolls there. Also proving lockdowns do not work

Overall Japanese are in better health and obesity is not a crisis here thus we see less deaths from the start.

Surprised that almost close to 2 years into the pandemic you still haven't figured out how the virus operates Not testing and allowing the infected to roam about infecting others will eventually over-burden the medical system as we are experiencing now as the number of serious cases will eventually skyrocket like we are seeing now. There is a gigantic difference between 5K and 50K cases, I can't believe you think the number of serious cases doesn't change regardless of the number of infected cases, If you didn't know it is the mild cases that with time eventually become serious cases, In some cases 3 to 4 days after testing positive suddenly change for worse and become serious cases, some are very unfortunate and pass away without receiving any medical care.

What makes Tokyo so special compared to other comparable large cities like New York that there hasn't been need for a lockdown in Tokyo ?

6 ( +13 / -7 )

Sorry Joffy. You're wrong. It can and does spread that way, it's just the least likely way for it to spread. It's known as the snot oral route. So, somebody can sneeze on their hand or pick their nose. Then enter a convenience store and touch things. The snot transfers to the item. If another person then touches that item and touches their own mouth, nose or eyes hey presto virus transmission occurs.

Over 100 deaths in UK yesterday despite higher vaccination rates and lower population proving that the poor health and rampant obesity of nations in the west is to blame for the high death tolls there. Also proving lockdowns do not work

I am inquisitive to know what is done in the UK to determine covid deaths ?

There is a saying that "A stitch in time saves nine" if the virus is allowed to spread out

of control like it is now, a lockdown in the short term will be less effective because the

spread will be occurring at homes except all households are single person households

that the spread will not be exponential. The situation now in Japan is totally out of control,

the low number of tests is helping to mask the severity of the situation. AKB, 17 members

infected, A highschool baseball team taking path in Koshien baseball tornament with a match

due on the 19th just pulled out with 8 members testing positive. Hankyu department store in Osaka

69 person cluster, Hanshin 169, Isetan 165 person cluster, these are only of the infected staffs,

the customers infected in these departments is unknown as there is no contact tracing.

Well the importance of pcr testing has dawn on the Hankyu department store management and

all 3,000 staff at the depart store will undergo pcr testing. There are thousands of clusters occurring

daily just because they are not reported here doesn't mean they are not happening.

Your post is devoid of facts and explains nothing, waiting to read why lockdowns are useless.

Let me answer your question with a question.

Knowing what we know now, would you have called for a lockdown - full business closure 24/7, essential workers only, no leaving your 区 - in Tokyo during the first wave of coronavirus?

-11 ( +5 / -16 )

see I told you the virus is smarter than the ldp who think shutting down eatery at 8pm and banning alcohol would eradicate Mr covid . How simpletons

Still trying to get a vaccine in Japan?

You need this number to get that reservation to log on to make a booking etc?

Japan is so far behind…

6 ( +8 / -2 )

good question..... while no doubt “possible” those kind of one day changes are unlikely/improbable with this virus. Changes in test locations, data collection changes or errors,, two day combinations as happened at the CDC in the US last week, etc much more likely..... Let’s hope I’m correct!

P. S. I lived in Nagoya and made frequent trips to Gifu so I’m hoping fir the best for both!

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Nice indirectly telling me you have no answer to my question.

You wouldn't have called for a lockdown during the first wave knowing what we know now because it would have been ridiculous to so as it still is.

We have vaccines being gradually rolled out offering protections to those most vulnerable. Things are not now going to get so bad that Tokyo or Japan will be a COVID-19 hotspot. At this stage in the pandemic a lockdown would be equal parts sadistic and stupid.

By the way, when someone answers your question with a question, it means they're encouraging you to think critically and help you arrive at a logical conclusion.

Back up your long Covid claims. Don’t avoid it.

To my knowledge, pharmaceutical companies aren't even developing treatments for long Covid yet. And currently the doctors here in Japan treat long COVID as a psychiatric condition. The onus isn't on people to prove that long covid isn't dangerous - it's actually on you to prove that it is dangerous if you want it to be taken seriously.
