500 by the end of the week for sure.

414 on 1724 tests, nice positivity rate !

27 ( +30 / -3 )

No testing, no vaccine, what do they expect is going to happen?

26 ( +30 / -4 )

Osaka at 600 as if this afternoon. Geez... I will set why? But hey, HUGE Hanami parties set for this weekend, too! And can’t skip the school entrance ceremonies, welcome parties, commutes to work, bargain sales, etc.

I just like how the government acts shocked, though. And boy just they be panicking to hide the actual numbers in Tokyo. Olympics just around the corner, and no vaccine for most until 2022

23 ( +27 / -4 )

Gooch: does the site happen to explain why Japan only tests one ten-thousandth or less of other countries each day, and/or why it’s the slowest to vaccinate?

20 ( +25 / -5 )

When the state of emergency was lifted, the government said they were going to ramp up testing, so I guess they ramped up from 10,000+ to 1,724...

15 ( +16 / -1 )

Looks like it will be well over 2700 total in the country today.

Highest daily total since late January, back when it was full-on SEO.

Also about the same total as early/mid December when the previous wave was building steam and calls were going out to stop Go To Travel.

Yep, the next wave is surely here.

13 ( +14 / -1 )

But the link he's giving is super-informative.

https://toyokeizai.net/sp/visual/tko/covid19/en.html

With all the data they have, they forgot the positivity rate ... again.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

Hyogo seems to have had a sharp increase in cases, as has Osaka.

In the overall context we are not seeing a lot of cases, but at the same time it illustrates why Japan should not have been wasting time with rolling out the vaccines.

10 ( +18 / -8 )

Unless the Tokyo population leave home with there head on the right way up.

Then all must be prepared face the consequences.

Also that photo depict out loud----with up to 30,000 oversea competitors’/support staff the postponed Olympic Games could be a nightmare waiting to happen.

At present there is no coherent vaccine strategy.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

The number of tests is a joke. Brisbane a city far smaller than Tokyo does 30,000 tests a day.

Didn't the government just say a few days ago they were going to INCREASE testing! When is that planned to start because it sure didn't happen this week. After the Olympics perhaps.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

With the Olympics around the corner . . . think social distancing, limit large group gatherings . . . . ?

7 ( +8 / -1 )

I refuse to stay home. I am now triple masking and bought several boxes of vinyl gloves. I also wear a ski mask over that and goggles.

I’d feel claustrophobic. Must feel like the walls are closing in.

Can you still hear the ambulances?

7 ( +8 / -1 )

@ Gooch

shows that the vast majority of cases have recovered

No it do not.

It only say the number of people which were discharged. Currently, we do not have clear numerical information about people which recovered thus no website will dare to make that claim.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

This is all because people get careless. We are so close. We could be back to our lives by late Summer. Or we could be in the midst of an overwhelming wave.

Stay home (I do. It sucks). Wear a mask (In Japan, mission accomplished. I haven’t seen a non-masked person in 6 months.) Wash your hands. Stay out of crowded places (I feel like this is where we are failing.

Get the vaccine when it’s available. On this point, I am very disappointed in the government.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

The photo is a indication as to why there is a danger.

Masks, but little social distancing

5 ( +11 / -6 )

Right, Tokyo, once again and continue to kick everyone else out of the country as being insignificant!

Miyagi (41・39), Okinawa, (35・37)and Osaka (21・92) have higher rates of infection per 100,000 people than Tokyo!

But does it matter?

4 ( +7 / -3 )

OK, let’s see if and how long you can stand it for years or decades until your last day has come, or if you now better had chosen one strict long lockdown to end it once and for all and get the former life back.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Anybody else noticed the Go To トラベル sign on the top left of the photo?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

This was never an issue for Japan and most Asian nations.

Of course this only applies as long as very taxing measures are in place, which is the whole point. Precisely because something is done is why the pandemic have less effect in public health, next you are going to say gunshots are not an issue... for people wearing bulletproof vests all day long.

News today: Over 100 Fully Vaccinated People in Washington State Test Positive for COVID-19

100 out of how many vaccinated total? 500 hundred? that would be alarming. 1 million? then that is even below the expected. No vaccine or drug is ever 100% effective, so some cases are completely expected, specially mild or asymptomatic.

Why do they keep using "cases" as the barometer for the severity of the issue? Only the severe cases and death numbers matter. The severe cases and death numbers are very similar to flu numbers.

One, no the death and complicated cases are not similar to flu numbers, much less if you include the frequent debilitating problems many people continue to have weeks or months after "recovering".

Two, cases are used as a reference because they indicate how well is the disease being controlled or not, and reflect closely how the hospitalizations and deaths increase or not. Better control means less deaths and complications because all patients can be treated with the best available care, more cases means people have to brace for the coming problems.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Yawn, I’ve been carrying on with my life whether the daily cases are 200 or 2,000. I’ll leave the cowering at home in fear up to others.

Attitudes like this have sadly led to an upswing in positive cases. Please show respect to the community you are a guest in.

This worldwide pandemic is getting worse by the day, this is NOT the time to bury your head in the sand and pretend its "life as usual". Its not.

Covid-19: Kent virus variant 'on course to sweep world'

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-56019995

If the Kent variant was to establish a hold through the aged population of Japan.

The emotional lose would would be incalculable

@Fighto...Excellent comment mate!

The photo sums up the situation in Tokyo where infection rates are bound to rise in the next few days!

But I’m not gonna sit a home and live in fear.

People like you need to realize that sacrificing social life for a few months is ideal in eliminating this outbreak from the local communities. New Zealand and Australia had proper lockdowns and people sacrificed a lot by staying indoors and they successfully eliminated or contained the outbreak! Now the people there can go back to normalcy. But in the US, Japan and some EU countries because there was half hearted lockdowns which began way too late it was never going to be brought under control! Then add attitudes of people like you and corona virus will never be brought under control. The arrogance and selfishness of a few doom the entire country!

State of emergency in Japan is a farce! Nobody takes it seriously anymore and nothing changes expect bar / restaurant operating hours. Also there is little to none financial support from the Government ( it’s their responsibility to assist their citizens after declaring SOE )! The whole system is a mess!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Hello Expert panel just look at the picture there no way social distancing is happening in Japan.

Overly poppulated to the point everyone has to play dogeball with eachother to get around the streets of Tokyo. The virus must be enjoying the sun shine too ?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Outside your chances of getting it from someone in a mask is almost nil.

Because, it is said doesn't mean it is true. We are told that nobody has caught it in the train doesn't mean it is true, they have never tried finding out because the economy will come to a grinding halt if is known transmission takes place in the train.

If mask was the panacea you make it to be then cases in Japan won't hit 500 even because almost everyone puts on a mask. I see people alone in their cars wearing or walking alone without anyone within 1m of them wearing mask.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

I feel so safe.

1,724 tests conducted from about 35 million people in Tokyo metro ! lol

500 cases out of 130mil people. How many people died? Obon, GW, sakura season, Xmas, etc. Give it up people. This was never an issue for Japan and most Asian nations. So long as you weren't fat or severely compromised medically, this was never more than a flu. I can't wait for.the next great heralding of an outbreak from you overweight pithy Americans. It's not a thing here, give up the ghost and go back.to living your life

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Nonsense, I take precautions, I wash my hands, wear a mask and social distance. I haven’t gone out drinking in a large group in over a year. But I’m not gonna sit a home and live in fear. That’s all I’m sayin.

Thanks. Negatives don't bother me - as they say, any publicity is good publicity :-)

Though I'm not quite sure where you get the nationalist narrative bit from. I'm as cynical about the J-govt as anyone else, just not scared out of my wits about the pandemic.

If you have been fine up to now, you will be fine !

Unless being a bar and Izakaya lover.

A study in December showed that 1.3% of people in Tokyo had covid antibodies. In some other cities , it was less than 1%. That shows that basically over 98% of the population has been covid free in 2020. No need to see the danger everywhere

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

In addition to news outlets world wide the internet has many journalists that report on factual information also.

The testing that the W.H.O. started is using sticks for testing that professionals have deemed the wrong type to properly detect Covid.

The fastest results take at least 2 days for processing and to read reports that say today there are __ new cases would be suspect.

Vaccines aren't what is be given, they are experimental injection with DNA changing anti-bodies that will stay in a body a life time.

Recovery rates in general are 99.7 for people that have been infected with something, age is a factor.

There are many drugs available that will help people recover from infections.

Searching and reading reports by professional people working in the medical and science fields may be found useful to people who have questions.

Had a lovely day out this afternoon at Tennoji Park. Many people enjoying the beautiful weather. Large groups of people enjoying life and the company of their friends and loved ones,

I refuse to stay home. I am now triple masking and bought several boxes of vinyl gloves. I also wear a ski mask over that and goggles. Hair tied up in a bun and shower cap.

It is safe out there if you are cautious. Sky still up.

I see numbers creeping up like a siren with a crescendo and diminuendo.

Gambatte Nippon. Wash those hands, social distance and keep away from ceremonies and parties, especially with the late night health officials.

Gooch: does the site happen to explain why Japan only tests one ten-thousandth or less of other countries each day, and/or why it’s the slowest to vaccinate?

No, it doesn't. But neither does any other site. You'll have to ask the government for an answer to your question, and take a number.

-11 ( +6 / -17 )

Grab your hard hats, folks. The sky's falling.

The Toyo Keizei site is about a day behind, but shows that the vast majority of cases have recovered and that most of those who have been seriously ill and/or passed away have been elderly. The site doesn't indicate any comorbidities, so nothing can be drawn directly from that missing information.

https://toyokeizai.net/sp/visual/tko/covid19/en.html

So while it's worth being cautious, unless you're in a high-risk group there's little to panic about. Just take reasonable precautions if you're in that group until you get that jab.
