Tokyo reports 446 coronavirus cases; Osaka logs record high 666

@klausdorth (and anyone who cares) - Golden Week is not something to look forward to. Not this year. But, if people are out and about, moving around, visiting, travelling, and praying at shrines and temple, celebrating all manner of human interaction and experience, I fear the numbers that will be announced only a few weeks before the (supposed) Olympics.

I live on an island that's managed to avoid the worst and control the rest, but we recently had a spike. A bad one that resulted in serious lockdown. And there are fewer than 600,000 people on my island, more than half of whom live in the capital city's immediate vicinity. Japan is not out of the quagmire. Worse is coming (and I'm no fear-mongerer, just a practical, logical, existential fatalist).

I only know of two people that caught the virus and survived without a hitch. The other four family members stayed negative, but al quarantined for two weeks together.

Here in Kyoto, I always ask people the question: Do you know anybody? The answer is always no. When you look around in an average winter, you see people sick with colds/flu, so you know there is sickness around. People just do not see sickness around them with this virus. So they just cannot take it seriously after such a long year of warning. Look, 666 is a big number, but out of many millions it is not. The odds - the odds! They KNOW, still very little chance they’ll get it, and if they get it they aren’t going to die. Just separate themselves for a week.

This is the picture young people, and even older people, see. And over the past year, there has been no change in that picture.

After more than one year, people are not falling down to death in the streets, like predicted before, we dont see here millions of deaths and serious cases like predicted before ....even since more than one year trains are still fully packed, 90% of the companies dont support home office, Izakayas are packed...even so, after more than 1 year in that situation, people are not dropping down death like flies.

Japan's policy is as it always has been -- pray and wait. They waited, and waited, and delayed any action, then even the "lockdown" was a joke. News of a vaccine comes and it was celebration in the streets as though everyone had gotten it and the whole thing was over. Pray and wait. Unfortunately, they also decided to wait and pray when it came to the vaccine, so now we're all forced to wait on that, too. And alas, now they are praying they can hurry up rollout after doing nothing but waiting, and praying things will just hold if not settle down before that... then they can pray numbers go down again. Osaka is asking Tokyo to take control, Tokyo is saying it's not under their control, etc.

Tokyo is behind Osaka because they extended their SOE by a few weeks. They will soon catch up I am sure. What is worrying is that the Osaka numbers have yet to be impacted by the hanami season. People are out and about here and acting as if everything is normal. This weeks Universities go back and a lot here are face to face. I have a feeling in about two weeks this will reveal itself to be the biggest wave yet. The question is will Osaka continue with its semi-SOE when this happens?

Went to Tennoji Park for a picnic in the afternoon, wonderful weather.

Plenty of families enjoying the day, it was lovely to see.

Seems to be as busy as usual, less people seemed concerned over Covid which is understandable considering it has hardly effected their daily lives.

More selective testing and disqualifying infections to keep the numbers down for the "Safety Olympics"!

All I can see is the continuation of running the economy as best as possible while vaccines are on the horizon. Life here has been pretty normal all things considered.

Even less births, more suicides, financial crash of the Olympics ... this is the honne behind the tatemae

The numbers keep creeping up. Japan has had over a year to get on top of this. All they have done is prolonged the inevitable.
