Do not relax your guard. The pandemic is nowhere near over or even under control.

Thats a lot for a Sunday...wonder if it's going to be higher over the week...

12 ( +16 / -4 )

Holy cow! Better close your windows and lock your door. Here we go again!

8 ( +13 / -5 )

Of these 47 cases, said Jiji news agency, 18 were working at a club which provides male drinking companions for women.

Just call it what it is: a host club.

Wasn't there an establishment recently that started doing business via zoom for their customers?

13 ( +13 / -0 )

All over the world, Clusters (like in this case a Host Club), are reported. There are 2 options, close these places until a vaccine is found, or we all have to accept it and live with it.

Other countries are reporting churches, hospitals, daycare centers for elder people...as Clusters.

What should the governments do? Close all these places?

As long as there is no vaccine, we have to accept that always clusters can happen. Let us live it.

Other countries have Clusters with more than 100 infections and the governments still continue to open its country.

And even these countries conducted much much more tests than Japan, they have Clusters and every day new infections.

So it is clear that all these many tests can not prevent new infections or clusters.

That is only 10 less than for the whole of China! So much for Aso's 'superior cultural standard'

26 ( +31 / -5 )

@Hello Kitty

Do you really think that the numbers China published are correct?

You should multiply them with at least 1000.

Every single word that comes out of the mouth of the CCP is a lie!

-12 ( +15 / -27 )

I always thought host clubs and their denizens were creepy. Now I have even more reason to dislike them.

6 ( +13 / -7 )

The prefecture I live in has only reported 26 cases since the whole mess started, I'm glad I got out of Tokyo a few years ago.

6 ( +11 / -5 )

“Do you really think that the numbers China published are correct?”

Do you think Japan’s are?

37 ( +41 / -4 )

It is not over yet. Stay safe and don't let your guard down.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

The time might be right for less self-indulgence.

I'm really beginning to lose all hope. I don't feel like this is ever going to end. Odds are I'll never be able to see my remaining Grandparents or (god forbid) my Mother again. If I cannot travel back home to the states within the next year or so, I will definitely not be able to say goodbye to my grandfather. I haven't been home since my Father's funeral. I haven't seen my friends or siblings in years.

My daughter can't play with her friends, I'm essentially stuck inside and have been since early February. My mental health has really gone about as far south as it ever has.

Honestly I don't know how much more of this I can take.

@Reckless

If I understand your post correctly, you think it is more safe in the US than in Japan?

Are you kidding me?

9 ( +16 / -7 )

Time to get some competent people running the show.

7 ( +13 / -6 )

Monty,

we should multiply the official Japanese numbers by at least ten, and probably more, to get the real figure.

10 ( +16 / -6 )

oldman_13: "Time to get some competent people running the show."

What are YOU talking about? YOU demanded time and again that everything be started back up again and rushed back to "normalcy". You are in part to blame for the second peak that is just starting. It's no different from the morons in the US, where they are reporting record daily highs in places where people marched to protest closures, where Governors have put the economy before health, etc. I can't believe you are now saying that it's someone else's fault. Well, actually, I CAN believe it. Just hope you're ready for more "I told you so's" when they have to close things down again because they listened to people who don't know better but demanded life go back to the way it was, ignorant of the fact that a virus does not care what you want.

No doubt the government in Tokyo is expressing "surprise" and "shock" that hte number could go up after thinking they had successfully negotiated with it to stay away from the decided "back-to-normal date" of June 1st. And I have no doubt they'll start fudging the numbers again and talk about "no need" for testing. There are two kids at my friend's school (well, where she works) that have had a fever above 38 for four days and they were told by a doctor simply to stay home, and that they did not need tests. I have no doubt clinics and hospitals are not just trying to avoid working, but have been told to limit tests to only those on death's door -- again, not because they can't test more, but because they don't want the actual numbers of infected out and have to close things down again as a result. If they're saying 45 today, you can bet it's more than a hundred, easy.

8 ( +16 / -8 )

Monty: "Do you really think that the numbers China published are correct?"

Gods, no! Who would? But then, I most certainly don't believe the numbers here, either.

"You should multiply them with at least 1000."

Once again, here too, though in both cases I think multiplying by a 1000 is way too high.

"Every single word that comes out of the mouth of the CCP is a lie!"

As opposed to... ? But let's say ONLY China is in the wrong, as many pro-Japan-Covid-handling posters like to deflect with, and I have no doubt you'd call it "China Virus" and justify it in your mind, Hello Kitty's point is still correct, since Taiwan and South Korea have had less deaths than Japan but Aso and Co. still believe there's some kind of cultural superiority at play in Japan.

These are the people who got infected around the time the state of emergency was ended. The two weeks infection to symptoms timeframe is evident. Let’s wait and see how many infection cases we have this week as it will probably give a clear indication of how things developed after the lifting of the state of emergency. It’s surprising that Osaka which is also highly populated did not record and major increase. There were many days in June when Osaka had 0 new infections. Seems like Tokyo people became too relaxed and didn’t exercise caution! But opening up the economy was essential as the Government here didn’t provide enough assistance to families who are suffering and these people needed to return to work to survive!

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Close the hostess/sex bars & establishments.Enough said.

-6 ( +6 / -12 )

Seems like Tokyo people became too relaxed and didn’t exercise caution!

Don't bunch all of Tokyo together with the host club employees. If you take them out, its just 31 cases, no big deal.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

Most of them were at a host bar. People need to get back to work and the economy needs to get moving again.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

We got our far too small to be effective Abe masks today. Just in time for the second wave.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Commuters have no respect for social distancing. Desperate for seats on trains.

The trains are not as busy as before, and its not difficult to spread out on trains by standing, but commuters are hellbent on squeezing next to each other on seats when there is hardly anyone standing.

This week I had a couple of women come and sit right next to me for literally 2 or 3 stops. Seriously.

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

No surprise, Tokyo has the largest population in Japan.

1 ( +7 / -6 )

Excellent point from Jim. People are desperate to open business because they've received no help.

If the government had already supported small businesses, similar to what happened in the UK, then lockdown could have extended and the return staged and cautious.

Don't necessarily knock the host clubs and karaoke parlours. They are legitimate businesses here. And they are going bankrupt with not much support.

if the business is legitimate then they need an income.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

@Monty

So it is clear that all these many tests can not prevent new infections or clusters.

Err...what 'many tests'? Japan is still not testing as much as they should.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

I walked into a 7-11 in my area tonight.

I was wearing a mask, and used the hand sanitizer at the entrance.

When I went to the drinks section (the big fridge with all the cold beverages) there were two guys in their early twenties, unmasked and taking their good time browsing.

I decided to cough and splutter up a storm - a foreigner - albeit it with a mask on - with the dreaded lurgy!

I got the drinks I wanted, then went to another section of the store.

The same pair were there, one shopping, one just following.

I got behind the ‘follower’ as I needed something he was standing in front of. I didn’t keep any ‘social distance,’ made my presence clear and, once again, coughed and spluttered up a storm.

The ‘follower’ didn’t notice or care and maintained a distance of a handful of centimeters.

It seems a lot of people think there’s nothing to worry about now.

They’re clearly very wrong.

So Tokyo figures humm, what about Japan figures, since, if I am not wrong about virus not dedicated to a region, it reveals much better the reality of the situation.

How to use so cunningly figures for political purposes...

Yeah blame in the host bars and nigth clubs in and not on the chinese who were planning to at and feed the chinese poppulation with infectious bats and now that back fires and the entire world is infected from this chinese communist party virus and we all though just because the state of emergency was lifed and everyone going about like they forgot that the virus was still around thanks to the BLM movement/rioting. Is this virus even real or is this just proganda?

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Well its true majority are hellbent over a seat. if you happen to get a seat offer it for 1000 yen to guy standing infront of you sure he will for the cash out for your seat.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

I didn't know there are host bars where men are paid to drink with women. Next time I visit Japan, I'm going to ask for a temporary (under the table) cash job at one of them :-)

Okay, just joking. But really, they have such things? I thought all Japanese women were afraid of sex.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

“It seems a lot of people think there’s nothing to worry about now.

They’re clearly very wrong.”

Or they’ve stopped buying into the hysteria

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Better close your windows and lock your door. Here we go again!

Panic! Panic!

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Still irrelevantly low.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

There is nothing wrong with panic. It may save your life.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Obviously, it was too early to lift the restrictions, especially on pubs, night clubs and other places where people gather on mass. It’s sad that Japan puts their economy over the health and safety of the general public. It’s also sad that many Japanese people lack the common sense to avoid contact with others for the sake of their own health and safety.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

18 cases from a single establishment.

Businesses open as usual.

Yeah, 47 cases out of 30+ million people seems about right.

Is anyone reading this article stupid enough to believe these figures?

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Considering how big Tokyo is, and allowing the number is really higher, no cause for alarm

1 ( +3 / -2 )

no cause for alarm

Yes. Let's wait for the numbers to reach astronomical levels before freaking out. Awesome advice.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

It’s not going away anytime soon. We can all hide away from something less dangerous than the Bubonic Plague. Or we can get on with life

5 ( +5 / -0 )

@Vinke

I am not talking about the tests in Japan! I am talking about the many many tests in other countries.

Other countries, even they conduct many many tests, they still have clusters almost every week with more than 100 new infections.

Therefore I said that all these many tests can not prevent new infections or Clusters.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Even with a rise in cases, and assuming the there are plenty more cases out there that are unreported, the death rate in Japan is staying low. And more cases reported without a similar rate in rises of people dying from (not with) COVID-19 would suggest this virus is not nearly as lethal as we are being led to believe.

Also as the narrative shifts to the "new normal," as the Japanese mainstream media keeps banging on about as a form of conditioning, we're being prepared for a life of greater restrictions on our freedom of movement and association. The big one will be restricting International travel to people with a vaccine, regardless of how safe or effective one may be.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

That makes complete sense. Remember two weeks ago the state of emergency was lifted. Results show now.

47 is nothing compared to Japan's population and I hope these low numbers maintain. Gambare!

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Lets hope those 47 that we CCP virus confirmed got proper medical treatment and they were tested before END Game stage of the disease.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Still haven't seen anyone wearing the tiny Abemask. As a leader......sorry I'm going to wander off.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I hope that all the people complaining that people are sitting next to them on the train and in cafes and other places would take that as a sign for them to stay at home themselves. A lot of people take no responsibility for themselves, just looking for someone else to blame.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Try walking to work , way healthier than. Ring stuck on a train....

1 ( +1 / -0 )

47 is nothing compared to Japan's population and I hope these low numbers maintain. Gambare!

Its 50 today. Weekend numbers were fudgingly low. I guess it's getting harder to fudge.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

There have been thousands and thousands infected with Covid in Tokyo....
