Today number at 5074. For whole week last week no was 29,618 versus this week total number is at 33,033   - an increase of 11.5% - this is with the limited testing in Tokyo.

On two related news about how bad the situation is in Tokyo below -

NHK news about “Over 60% of COVID patients denied hospitalization” - link below

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20210820_14/

Sad state of affairs - sentence from this article - “The sources also say that among 845 cases of hospitalization, it took three to five hours for patients to arrive at hospitals in 159 cases and more than five hours in 121 cases.”

Another news on Asahi - “Less than 10% of Tokyo patients with COVID-19 in hospital” - link below

https://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/14422750

Key sentence from this article - “Tokyo's medical care structure is so overwhelmed by the novel coronavirus pandemic that less than 10 percent of COVID-19 patients in the capital can be accommodated in hospitals for treatment.”

These two articles show really how bad the situation is in Tokyo. Please be safe and take care everyone!!!

“Less than 10% of Tokyo patients with COVID-19 in hospital”

Less than 10% CAN GET IN to the Hospitals.

Top story on here is Taliban with Tokyo count being under the fold as they say or "Burying the Lead"

If the comments are still unlocked in a few hours I'd be shocked.

Biggest social welfare topic since I have lived in Japan ad the keep censoring the feedback (comments)

Pretty sad. Not shocking though. Which is sad itself. To EXPECT censorship.

Did something change how they report these numbers? Not admitting people into the hospitals? It's very strange that 5000+ cases for 4 days in a row and the national numbers increasing steadily, the Tokyo numbers are flat.

Yes, numbers are flat like the brains of Japanese Government members.

Oh, just to add some numbers : during the last 7 days, 145,653 infections were reported nationwide and 47,681 needed hospitalizations (medical treatment), that's 32%.

Regarding Tokyo, 6 deaths are reported : 3 persons 80s, 1 person 70s, 1 person 50s and 1 person 30s (dead in July 28).

Nationwide, there are 193,355 hospitalizazions (up 12,249 in one day).

I am still trying to understand what Japan leader is trying to achieve.

16 ( +20 / -4 )

Figures for people waiting for hospital beds? Figures for numbers of hospitalisations, not just severe cases? Figures for people on oxygen at home? Figures for people sick in hotels? Average time for Covid patients in ambulances to gain admission to a hospital? Numbers of deaths at home?

The age breakdowns are okay to keep giving, but you need to give more information please Japan Today.

Although deaths are slightly trending up in many prefectures, at least in Tokyo it could be that the increase in rates of infection is slowing down a little bit. Too early to say if the curve is being flattened, but let's see what happens to the 7 day averages of new cases over the next week.

15 ( +18 / -3 )

It seems like Tokyo has reached its max for hospitalized severe cases. All the rest will have to “recover” (aka risk death) at home.

Is there any reason the usual link to the official page of test numbers vs. poz cases has been omitted from today's report, Mod?

Looks a little fishy to just take the stats away like that...

270 people. 90% are over 70 years old with pre-existing conditions and are already vaccinated.

Thanks, where can we find this information ?

I can't help but notice just like before the Olympics Tokyo is lowering testing.

While the rest of Japan the testing and cases increase Tokyo went for nearly 20,000 test on Thursday August 12 to just under 16,000 on August 19 and over 18,000 on Friday August 13 to just over 11,000 for today ( we know that will go up by about 2,000 like yesterday and every other day) so let's say 13,500~ 14,000 that is 4,000 to 5,000 fewer tests.

This is not the case in other areas seems closer we get to the Olympics and Paralympics and numbers go up in Tokyo testing goes down.

This week Tokyo tested fewer than last week as Osaka and Kanagawa increased testing.

Re- election. That's the only thing Suga cares about. Think he gives a toss about the average folk?

Suga... you mean the thing with no brain, no heart, no soul, no feeling, no compassion and no balls ?

Well, I more incline to think he is just trying to open a new way to deal with a pandemic : just do nothing and see what happens. Oh wait, yes, let's just blame alcohol and also food after 8 pm.

I can't help but notice just like before the Olympics Tokyo is lowering testing.

The less tests, the less infected, the less hospitalizations, simple to solve the lack of beds.

There is no 防災 in the mind of Tokyo government. Only lies there are. I am happy not to live in Tokyo.

Please see my above post with two articles from NHK and Asahi - explains the mystery of why Tokyo serious cases are flat or reducing....

4 ( +9 / -5 )

In Tokyo, the ratio infections/tests was 6.6 % in July 1st with 8,300 daily tests in average.

On August 19 (data still need to be consolidated), the ratio is at least 30 % and average daily tests are not even 15,000.

Even if the man is correct and 4.5% have symptoms over 8 weeks, these are not life threatening or life changing and there is no evidence of these being for life. All sufferers of viruses can have similar symptoms, it’s not only a Covid thing.

This makes no sense, why would you think that other infections having long lasting symptoms would make it less important that a lot of people with COVID also have it. And the problems can very well be life changing, trying to downplay the serious suffering the patients are having shows more about the state of your moral standards than about COVID not being a serious disease.

Regardless it is being peer-reviewed now.

it does not come up to the standards we demand.

After reading this article I’m beginning to feel really scared of COVID-19. Living in fear and worried

Don’t get hysterical.

Get vaccinated.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

what's the number of PCR tests?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

It’s all okay because people will be back on the crowded trains on Monday morning reading about the case numbers going up – same as usual in never changing Japan…

1 ( +4 / -3 )

So when is the national government willing lift the ban on vaccine distribution to poorer areas?

Even poorer areas such as many areas of Kanagawa did not even receive their vouchers.

All the while rich areas such as Minato-ku is about finished with vaccination and have ample appointment openings that the general population cannot use.

The voucher system is a system purposely designed to kill off the non-elites in addition to the vaccine distribution restrictions on the non-elite areas.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

This is a very interesting statement. What source or evidence do you have on this?

Go take a look at Minato-ku and Shibuya-ku vaccine sites, all openings and you can easily make an appointment.

Then take a look at Shinjuku-ku, Toshima-ku, Kita-ku, all appointments full, and has been full since early July except for 10 minute openings where the IT system usually crash and only a few people can book appointments.

Then take a look at Yamato City in Kanagawa, did not even bother sending out the vouchers to young people.

The poorer the area, the later are its vouchers, and the less supplied they are.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Then take a look at Yamato City in Kanagawa, did not even bother sending out the vouchers to young people.

My wife and I both got vaccinated in Yamato well over a month ago. My daughter’s age group will start August 23 and we already have her scheduled next week. We didn’t have any problems whatsoever and when I went to my regular clinic right before Obon the doctor asked if I wanted the vaccine … said he had several openings. Sorry that your friend is having trouble but basically everyone I interact with in Yamato has gotten vaccinated.

五賎: "five lowly castes of the ritsuryo system"

0 ( +6 / -6 )

Getting vaccinated does not stop you from catching COVID, nor does it stop you from transmitting it to others.

Be cautious, regardless whether you have had a vaccination or not, and follow the recommended guidelines.

The problem is, people once they've been vaccinated think that they are immune and can't infect others... they're the ones who are totally selfish - wear a face mask.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

If we look at the numbers, we will see that 40s and 50s make up nearly 1,300 cases.

That is 25.5% of new cases.

According to the doctors in this article those in this age range are now getting sicker and making up a larger portion of severe cases.

According to metropolitan government figures, a total of 47 people aged in their 40s to 50s had severe coronavirus symptoms on July 28."

On July 28 there were only 80 people with severe covid according to bthe Tokyo government and now we know over half were under between 39 and 59.

The article basically say things have gotten worse but even if the percentage hasn't increased.

This means as many as 135 of the present 270 are between 39 and 59 with severe covid and in Tokyo that means they are on a breathing machine.

Also I have a friend from Yamato-city who had been hospitalized since early this year. Despite the hospital already having multiple covid cases now, but they refused to vaccinate her despite her being in a very high risk group, simply because Yamato-city have not sent the vouchers to her age group. The government simply sentences people from non-elite cities to risk death with this unfair voucher system.

Actually @blahblah222 is correct.

These places do have more vaccine than needed not problem getting vaccinated in these places.

Adachi-ku, Arakawa-ku, Kita-ku, and other lower income places have had nothing but shortages.

My daughter's friend lives in Arakawa-ku she is visually impaired but under 30. Arakawa was out of vaccine and the last thing I heard was they hoped to get more this week and open again to booking.

Similar in Adachi-ku, etc...

Let the people see whats happening in real time. Otherwise mis-information makes everyone confused.

@Rob - yet you post data without any source, (age, pre-existing conditions, vaccination status), and then ask for that data to be issued, suggesting that you don't actually have the data after all.

It would appear to be you that is sharing misinformation.

That article is useless.

I want clear information.

The article was very clear that according to the Tokyo Government that on July 28, 47 of the 80 with severe covid were between 39 and 59. And it was clear things have only gone up since then.

You made this claim:

270 people. 90% are over 70 years old with pre-existing conditions and are already vaccinated.

Without any data or proof.

But it is clear that by July 28 over half of those with severe covid were under 60.

Virus

I don’t downplay anything, and I also don’t resort to emotional hysterics with things. Covid and Long Covid can be deadly but we must look at the big picture. What is best for society, is it panicking and bunkering down or other measures. Naturally people will suffer from any virus, it’s obvious, yet we have many exaggerations of the dangers posted her daily for 18 months. None have yet happened.

It's very strange that 5000+ cases for 4 days in a row and the national numbers increasing steadily, the Tokyo numbers are flat.

Actually, it's not strange at all. The spike in cases began in Tokyo and over a few days, moved out to the surrounding areas. Now, that Tokyo is leveling off, it will take a few days for the surrounding regions to do the same. You'll see over the coming days a sharp decline in all areas. You can quote me on that.

Again, numbers are down from last week. Like I've been saying, a quick look at a graph would explain it all. We are officially leaving the plateau of daily cases, and beginning the decline. Vaccinations played a role, but more likely, the wave just ran it's course.
