Today number at 5094 - this number is 528 more than last week (last week number was 4566).

Last week Tue number of tests conducted was 13,693 for positive number of 4568, a positivity ratio of 33.3%

Today number of 5094 is as a result of number of tests done yesterday at 10402 - this works out to a positivity rate of 49% - crazy high number again

Like yesterday again the number of tests have reduced by 3,290 - absolutely no reason why the number of tests should be reduced but this is what is actually happening

Also today, 12 people with the Paralympics were infected, including 1 foreign journalist that has been here for more than 2 weeks, and therefore is out of quarantine and could freely move about Japan.

Obviously, this person caught the virus in Japan.

24 ( +26 / -2 )

Also today, 12 people with the Paralympics were infected,

On similar news reported 90 people cluster in Hokkaido - where they held Ice Hockey tournament with more than 1000 people gathering together from 26 teams across Japan

Link below of this news -

Why why why? Dont these people learn anything and read any news?

And we have Koike still saying that they are thinking of sending students to attend Paralympics - what the hell is going on here!!!

I guess the government is going to have to shrug extra hard today.

Also this news at Mainichi shows the real serious cases in Tokyo as per below link news

https://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/14417765

As per the report Tokyo reports serious cases at 218 as of Aug 11, which only covers people on ECMO ventilators but do not cover people who are in ICU - rest of Japan for people who are in ICU are included as serious cases

If you include ICU people in Tokyo then the real serious cases for Tokyo turns out to be 947 as of Aug 11…

@sal

I disagree. Unfortunately Tokyo is suffering from shortage of vaccines and many countryside areas are experiencing the same issue.

not to mention the antivaxxers not helping at all.

15 ( +20 / -5 )

The current spreading of the delta variant in Japan cannot be stop for sure because most of the ignorant people behave like if there was no virus.

Persons that are fully vaccinated persons or who had Covid can still host the virus and contaminate others. So they have to keep preventive measures.

At the current pace of infections, I cannot imagine what the country will become.

Sounds like Japanese Government decided to accept deaths and incapacities for many persons.

The situation is going to be worst than any Western European countries.

Shame on Japanese government, shame on anti-vax, shame on people spreading lies and disinformation.

@Foreigner in Tokyo

Here are the number of tests performed in Tokyo (from the opendata).

With this number of tests, there is no right view of the real situation.

Any other country from the G20 is doing far better on monitoring spreading of the virus.

The vaccinations in Japan are also continuing at about 500,000 per day...

...They are widely available.

Umm, your realize why they are not doing the planned 1 million shots per day, right?

And that they hope to have vaccinations completed for everyone who wants one by the end of November?

And that my city contacted to offer my family dates for vaccination in either October or November?

You know why???

It because they are not widely available.

12 ( +15 / -3 )

Funny (not!) how the 90 people cluster in Hokkaido includes 78 students who will have likely been in contact with their respective families. Say 2 parents per child (with the strong assumption of them being only children). It means 200 people at least involved in this cluster.

utterly ridiculous that they even call this call to refrain from alcohol state of emergency.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

Japanese people trust authority, they make decisions based on what the governments sentiment / behavior is, so of course they're not really worried.

11 ( +14 / -3 )

It's a race. The vaccinations in Japan are also continuing at about 500,000 per day. The percentage of vaccinated population climbs about 3% each week. My whole family and all my wife's relatives here in Japan have been double-vaccinated. They are widely available. Between those already infected who gain natural immunity, and the increasing vaccinations, at some point the virus will not find enough hosts to replicate.

You are probably right and this is the explanation of the trend being seen in India and UK in regard to the delta variant ( with a mix of Stay Home measures ). Though it never really drops back to 2 digits number.

So we will get there at some point but when.

in any case I see the comments on vaccine being easily available, it really depends where you live and even your district in Tokyo. As long as it will be a fight to be able to have a vaccination slot and that Hospital are saturated this is a very inconfortable situation to be in and it should never have happened in a country like Japan.

Hi Jim,

The numbers aren't based on the tests from yesterday. They include results from the past few days. That's why they use the 3 day moving average of 13, 429. I believe they adjust the figures later. There's no doubt that the positivity rate is climbing, however.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Literally everybody I know has had at least one shot. Yes, you do have to have to move quick and monitor the websites for slots but it's not impossible or as difficult as some are making out especially on this website.

I strongly disagree. My ward is still not vaccinating anyone under 49.

9 ( +14 / -5 )

They are widely available.

Apparently not according to many other posters.

I'm operating on the principle of "one swallow does not make a summer", but when I (finally) managed to book mine yesterday, I saw a very, very slight glimmer of hope.

When you scan the QR code on the paperwork they send you, you are directed to a website for your particular ward - Shinjuku in my case. Initially there were 17 centres listed, and one seems to have been added, as it's now at 18.

Until yesterday, I never saw more than one of those 17 / 18 centres showing as having an available slot, and even then the slot disappeared so fast that you had no chance at all of booking it.

Yesterday there were four or five such centres advertising open slots. Some of them disappeared after refreshing the page, but this was the first time I had seen that much activity, and I had been checking it multiple times every day.

Like I said, I could have just got very lucky with the timing, and barring my slot being given to someone else who has influence with the local politicos, I won't need to check it again, but I hope - for everyone who wants to get a shot - that we'll see progress, however slow it might be.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

So let me get this straight, your answer to slowing the spread is to increase the density of people in establishments?

No, thats the answer of the Japanese government.

Starting the day after tomorrow on the 16th, the J-gov will up the total allowance of people coming into Japan from abroad from 2000 per day up to 3500 per day.

Because, you know, they got the virus under control.

Maybe there will be an article about it on here tomorrow (hopefully) but for now, you can see it in Japanese on NHK News (notice the time stamp. They conveniently "reported" this at 3:55AM today)

I take back what I wrote above. My ward FINALLY started to accept reservations from people under 49 only two days ago, it seems. I just got a reservation for the end of September. That’s half a year after all my family in the US got their first dose, but I’ll take it.

The number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms in Tokyo was a record high 245

Just 2 days ago doctors were warning the panel of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare that:

"By late August, nearly half of 400 beds secured for COVID-19 patients suffering severe symptoms would be taken up"

https://japantoday.com/category/national/update1-experts-warn-japan's-coronavirus-fight-in-critical-phase

Today the number is 245, which is over 60% capacity. So now its way beyond half full, and it's still the first half of the month.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

I don't know what it is like in other places outside of Tokyo, but where I live the vaccinations are picking once it is out of the hands of central government. I already had my two shots as has most of my wife's family. The city posted a plan to vaccinate all those who can be or want to be by late September. They have kept to the plan so far. They predict 85% vaccinated by that date.

The city next to me, albeit with a smaller population, has already started vaccinations for under 30s and junior high kids.

Good luck to those in Tokyo.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

@Monty

I don't understand why people here in the forum have so much problems to get their vaccines.

What part of "they hope to have vaccinations completed for everyone who wants one by the end of November" don't you get?

If vaccines were so widespread and easy to come by, why is hardly 35% of the country vaccinated??

Why are they announcing that the vaccinations be finished till the end of autumn??

My ward is still not vaccinating anyone under 49.

My city of nearly 30,000 in Kansai is still not vaccinating anyone under 59.

If one has been to the Kanagawa seaside, one can see a ton of young Japanese in the beach house/bars opened only for the summer. There are no masks and filled to the gills with people. The beaches, in general are full, as well, so no caution toward COVID on the beaches, where drink and food flow aplenty with people talking loudly and spewing germs at will.

No wonder the virus spreads more with younger people, who most likely then don't care whether they bring the virus to their parents, relatives, etc.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

@FIZZBIT

Pulliing the friendly anti-vaxxer stance. Sneaky sneaky.

Geert Vanden Bossche is another darling of the antivax brigade.

His statements have already been torn to shreds by many other scientists, but it's nice clinging to antivax straws whenever you can.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

Monty, your anecdotal evidence regarding the vaccines reminds me a person living in the upper east side that thinks normal folks eat caviar for breakfast and shop on fifth Avenue as a job.

Besides, the Russians have refused to publish reliable phase 3 results and therefore their vaccine has not been adopted by developed countries. Why is it so hard to understand?

5 ( +10 / -5 )

@Fizzbit

Yes, mass vaccination campaigns are part of the total environment in which a virus reproduces and mutates. The best mass vaccination campaigns are those implemented as close to lightning speed as possible, to a very high percentage of the population. Achieving this ideal is of course highly challenging, but in a democracy, the solution is surely not to vaccinate only the elites -- this solution might be inferred from reading your quote of the Dutch expert.

The key concept is surely velocity. In the out-of-control spread situation, a virus mutates naturally, and failure to adopt a mass vaccination campaign is criminal negligence for a society with a modern medical system. To reduce velocity of transmission (which reduces the speed of mutations), lockdowns, remote work and schooling, mask-wearing, and handwashing all must be used because they are proven methods to slow down viral transmission.

This is where we are now, struggling to reduce velocity of transmission while also keeping up as rapid a pace of vaccinations as possible, to as many people as possible.

Giant sports events and all kinds of festivals and cultural events are vectors of community transmission, and to be avoided in a pandemic.

- “That is a very selfish demand!”: [Total shut down is now very urgent.]

It would ‘solve’ nothing NOW. Their government missed every previous opportunity.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

when Lambda spreads the ace policy will be what...

As far as I know, still delta by far overturns lambda, and it also has not raised to VOC yet. So there might be a few cases here and there, especially in the northern parts of South America, the region where it mainly stems from, but in general still no reason for panicking. Should be very well watched though, in this point you are right of course.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Total shut down is now very urgent.

This is not going to happen now.

The situation here is only bad when you compare it to last week. Really these daily numbers of new cases reports just whip people up into an anxiety frenzy and I wonder if they're actually doing more harm than good.

We're only a month away until vaccine parity with the US. Lockdowns were always a bad idea but right now doing one in Tokyo would be completely asinine.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

I’m seeing all kinds of out of prefecture license plates up here in rural Fukushima, which basically means the Tokyo crowd could give a rats behind about what they spread up here during the obon holiday, they were asked to not come here this year but they flout it. We had an almost 100 person cluster ab a child care facility caused by a Tokyo visitor about a week ago.

The vaccine is the only way out if this mess, the sooner that’s been done the sooner life can get back to normal. I’ll get my second one next week then I am personally done with it.

I just can tell you the personal experience from the people around me and my wife.

Received voucher, did a phone call to the hospital, got your first shot, 3 or 4 weeks later, second shot.

Everybody said, no problem.

But, I am talking about Tokyo. I don't know about Kansai.

About just 35% vaccinated,...in my opionion, many japanese don't want to take the vaccine because they are scared of the side effects.

You know how the japanese people are...怖い、怖い.

And they are living in different areas in Tokyo and they are different ages.

Young or old doesn't matter.

But, you said...Yes, you do have to have to move quick and monitor the websites...but all the people I talked to, received the voucher and did the reservation by phone, not by internet.

And everybody said to make the reservation by phone was very easy.

Nobody was rejected.
