Like what do they need a hanko approval before confirming someone is dead!

I do not see where is the curve flattening. It is still going up thought at a slower pace. On the other hand tests are not increasing even thought the positive rate is super high.
At the same time : nationwide 25,876 today, 25156 yesterday, 20361 one week before.
Unfortunately, it is too early to claim we are seeing the end of this rise.

We do not know. It seems obesity, age, race, gender, blood type, and other medical conditions are all factors. Once the dust settles, probably the death toll will mostly reflect the general health of the population.
The currently available mRNA vaccines developed under the "operation warp speed" program do NOT prevent infection, so are completely irrelevant from a population point of view. Their benefit seems to be mostly to the recpient, not to others. What completely baffles me is that by and large it is our traditional Trump haters who are now clamouring for everone to get these Trump shots. Strange world.

Maybe you got it in the past without even knowing.

I take the crazy crowded train to work every day on the Tokyo metro and have not got the virus so far so I’m not sure how badly this virus is. I got the moderna jab. So who is catching the virus? I think we forgot about the asymptomatic peeps who are carrying the virus with no symptoms regardless of the delta strain

If only there had been some way of predicting that hosting the Olympics could spark rises in cases, we could have cancelled the event.

Has it occurred to you that the problem lies with the authorities and not the general public, how do you blame a public that has been taught to believe what the authorities and media tell them. They are shown low numbers for Japan and high numbers for other countries with smaller population and less density than Japan with never any mention of test numbers, of course they are bound to think it isn't serious and they will be fine.
Look at narrative for the testing of foreigners entering the country for the olympics was, that they needed to be tested daily to prevent them the untested, unvaccinated public from being infected by the incoming foreigners. Look at Australia's approach, everybody is treated the same as the virus doesn't discriminate.
drlucifer
It would be interesting to know what the numbers are when they finally come out 3 or 4 years from now
may be you would have graduated by then. When numbers take that long to come out, It is natural to starts suspecting the numbers are being cooked.

Only God knows
Nobody alive knows , even the mlhw doesn't know.
It is clear the gov't, experts, media and populace don't want to know and not interested in finding out , everybody is happy the numbers are better compared to some countries though presently it is worse than it is made to be. So much aversion to truly reporting bad numbers and strong tendency to over report good numbers, one just ends up not knowing what to believe anymore.

I'm guessing you're a teenager, but your parents can only be blamed for your behavior up to a point.
I know what you mean. Teenagers are famous for being selfish and saying things like "as long as I can watch all the olympic events then I don't care if a few people out of millions die, they weren't my friends or nothing".

Seems like 5K is our new ballpark figure. Almost nostalgic to look back at the days when it was 500 and people were freaking out about that (and others were absolutely insistent that we wouldn't see more than slight increases and decreases....).

Wonder what would happen if they ever did enough testing to reach 10,000.
Guess we will never know as its not going to happen with these slime balls

Blah blah blah …. Until the Japanese public start to care , the spread will continue. But “Daijoubu” everything is perfect . Nothing to worry about. I rarely agree with Suga but … he’s right . What good is a strict lockdown if the peaceful and kind citizens won’t listen to kind requests? This is an avoidable disaster. But it’s gonna take a country wide effort to contain . It starts with personal responsibilities. Can’t blame or expect everything from the JGOV. Businesses are being propped up with corporate welfare so I have no sympathy for them .

This daily “5000 plus” doesn’t seems phase anyone in on on the current Paralympic stride.
So sadly, don’t think many caught some ‘intended’ sarcasm(?) @Alan Bogglesworth 4:58pm: “Going down, thank the lord!”
Seems to conflict with 5:00pm posted in: “Paralympic torch relay events begin in Tokyo as COVID concerns linger”:

368 LESS positive cases compared to Friday last week. As I said before, you can see the curve is flattening, and with the vaccines rolling out at a steady speed the curve will likely begin the downtrend soon.

The actual number of cases is far more. There is no point in debating. There is no published seroprevalence study so far from the government. Our University (UTokyo) did some study almost a year back. Unfortunately, the results are still unknown even to the participants. Recently, I was reading about an extensive seroprevalence study conducted in India. Antibodies have been found in nearly 70% (1 billion) cases where their reported value is just 32 million even though they (India) have tested almost 2.5 times more per million than Japan. However, we can not equate with them there is a huge difference in living standards and basic health infrastructure.

New guidelines eyed for issuing, ending state of emergency https://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/14421871
This is the governments next fix? They can't stop the numbers of cases going up - so make them irrelevant and focus on vaccine numbers.
This is a dangerous development. Even though the SOEs here are pretty useless, they are better than lifting them completely by changing the goal posts. Numbers of cases will continue to grow and with them, the chances of a new variants will increase.
Such bad leadership AGAIN.

Reckless Today 05:10 pm JST 'Testing dropped about 3,000 per day so almost 40% positive rate.....'
I thought that too but since a few weeks ago when the figures suddeny jumped I found out later that the private testing positive cases are now being added into these numbers. They don't add in the private testing numbers, just the + cases they find, so % rate is bit elusive now, but probably alot more than the 8.3% it was for the ~16 months until they made this change.

Why ?
anon99999
Minimising the number of tests is the foolproof method of reducing official Covid case numbers. You do not have to be a genius to understand this. Furthermore no one cannot even be accused of cheating the numbers because the official numbers are what they are based on the tests that were done. I mean we see this every week after week with the reduced tests on weekends. It is impossible that less cases every weekend and then going back up has any semblance or reality to real case numbers. And now with the paralympics starting government is happy to keep tests lower ( thus cases lower) for the sake of the games. Maybe after they will do a few more tests but then it will be close to election time and they wouldn't want very large test numbers ( thus higher cases) tarnishing their miraculous achievement of beating the virus with their SOE and Quasi SOE's
dagon
There is a lot of static on a daily basis as regards the infection figures. One question I have never seen properly answered. The number of tests seems absurdly low and positivity about the rate of infection seems dangerously high. For the ones who celebrate any slight dip in infections: Do you reject the accuracy of the reported rates of testing or feel they are not significant in some respect?

It would be interesting to know the real numbers.

Honestly not trying to go conspiracy theory here about hiding numbers. I am just trying to understand the
what the process is for announcing deaths. Like do families have to sign off on it before the announcement as I was under the naïve impression that the announced death tolls were those the day of. I was looking on the Social welfare site that JT has for the testing numbers to see what today's death toll was and noticed the date of death of some of the people announced was like 10 or 12 days ago.
So I just clicked on a few other dates like this one from August 16th https://www.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/tosei/hodohappyo/press/2021/08/17/26.html
3 of the deaths announced that day are from June like 2 months before???

Very much the storm before the calm at the moment.
Japan now has 50 million people who are fully vaccinated, so these numbers will start to come down as the vaccination program rolls on.
