Does anyone actually believe these numbers? Anyone? I live in Iwaki, Fukushima and there are no available hospital beds. Too many children from 1-17 years old with Covid. Too many teachers from preschool-high school with Covid. If people really want to get back to any sense of normalcy, they need to get vaccinated ASAP! It’s way too soon to remotely consider allowing bars/restaurants/karaoke bars to even be open let alone shortened hours. The vaccine rollout has been a disaster but it is what it is. If people would just care about others we could get past this horrible virus. We could achieve “containment.” So 22 months has been wasted. That can’t be changed. But going forward, if people would just stop being selfish and in some ways dangerous, we can get through this sooner than later. If another wave comes , I hope we have a prime minister who will actually follow through with a true lockdown as we’ve never had 1. There’s the options .

I can only say that the current trend, although positive, is making some people tired and emotional.

@PSmith: Quite true. The number of available bed slots definitely needs an increase. You are right on with your thoughts again.

The number of hospitalizations is the important figure because of the finite number of hospital beds.

Deaths still at the Jan, March, May, June levels, or is that just collateral damage, and I'm alright so it's alright? What was a massive spike in deaths at the height of the first wave is now considered to be good news.

What is getting more attention internationally is the larger number of more serious cases among younger people, and the larger number of children ending up seriously ill. Rather than trumpeting something that looks better than before as if the situation is going to sort itself 'naturally' (hint - it's not), how about working proactively towards getting the baseline level of infections low enough that the next wave will be better controlled? This happy clappy reaction is not the way to get ahead of the disease and really aim for a meaningful reduction in its spread. Places like New Zealand are way more ambitious and have much more chance of getting closer to what people used to consider 'normal'.

50,000 would be fine considering the size and population of the Kanto Plain. Congrats Japan and Mr. Suga for achieving this fabulous and remarkable number.

Maybe now we can make a trade and allow us to have a beer with our Ramen, and women in coffee shops can have water rather than caffeine chatty chatty coffee and tea all afternoon while hubbies slave on the train and commute games.

565 in Tokyo alone, while it were 579 cases in the whole country a year ago, and you talk of amazing, good job, well done and more? If you do such a ‘good’ job in your company you’re surely fired, and that much earlier than your employer waiting and looking at it for one year…lol

Yeah I agree with that, let's see how we go through the Fall/Winter and then maybe by Spring we might consider trying the no mask thing. I'm flexible regardless, have no issues following the rules and doing what is expected here.

It probably will in terms of year-round use, but the Japanese tend to be very cautious people ( one of the first Japanese words I remember learning from frequency of use was ‘abunai’ ). I think they’ll be around for a while yet.

Then again, I’d take cautious over the delirium about masks from the alternative media crowd.

Anyway, more promising news.

Good job Japan! I just wonder if the mask thing will ever go away, of course I wear one wherever I go but will we ever return to a pre-covid type environment where masks were more a thing in the winter when cold and flu season was around. Here's hoping anyways!
