The Tokyo metropolitan government on Thursday reported 641 new coronavirus cases, up 251 from Wednesday and 577 more than last Thursday. It was the highest figure for the capital since Sept 18.

The number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms in Tokyo is three, unchanged from Wednesday, health officials said. The nationwide figure is 64, up four from Wednesday.

Nationwide, the number of reported cases was 4,475. Okinawa Prefecture had the highest number with 981, followed by Tokyo, Osaka (505), Hiroshima (273), Yamaguchi (181), Aichi (159), Kanagawa (152), Saitama (150), Kyoto (121), Chiba (111), Hyogo (106), Fukuoka (80), Shiga (76), Hokkaido (74), Nara (63), Kagoshima (61), Nagano (57) and Gunma (56).

People with sniffles. The mild symptoms resemble common cold symptoms, now that it's cold & flu season. Hoodathunkit.

The worry here is the exponential rise in cases in just days - way way faster than Delta ever spread.

Test and ye shall find! They should test for the flu each year too. Or the common cold. This is getting ridiculous now. If Tokyo has 600 "official" cases, that means it's everywhere.

Only 3 people hospitalized. Really no need for any restrictions if Tokyo isn't in any danger of hospital overcrowding.

-2 ( +23 / -25 )

More than half of the new cases today again are doubled dotted… wonder we should be pissed off?

-10 ( +6 / -16 )

What a surprise.

I love this logic, there is no problem yet, so let's carry in as is until there is a problem, then react!

@Commodore,

there are 5640 hospitalised, with 911 more hospitalised yesterday. JT only reports on severe cases, not all cases.

Guys, hospital bed occupancy for Tokyo COVID now is 5.4% and of which for serious cases is 0.6%. You can check the data in the link within the article.

Zia, I upvoted your comment. Hope you will soon recover. If already, great! Thanks for sharing your story and honesty!

@jkctlr89

Thank you for the link. We're not anywhere near a crisis point in hospital bed occupancy though.

@nonu6976

A calm and considered approach has always been (and has been proven to be) the best response to COVID-19 in Japan.

@klaus and nonu

Are you guys vaccinated?

If yes, what is your problem?

Why are you worried?

Or do you not trust the vaccine you took?

-7 ( +12 / -19 )

@Zia and Esteban

Same......3 days of body aches and a 38 degree fever, plus the worry that the people I was out with now have it and spread it to their families.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Is there any info whether these are delta or omicron?

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Only 3 severe cases in the hospital, is that even 1% of the total cases? Very very mild in severity this new variant, very easily spreadable but symptoms seem no worse than a cold especially when you already have a vaccine shot. Still need to be careful as usual out there but I'm not running around scared that's for sure.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

Omicron is everywhere. Its 70x more transmissible than Delta. The good news is that its way more mild than Delta and if you actually get Omicron you are immune from Delta!

There are only 3 people with severe illness with Covid in the entire city of nearly 14 000 000 densely packed people. That tells you all you need to know. After 2 years of this.

Infections are only just beginning in Tokyo and will continue to increase exponentially until we hit our peak. It's also not necessarily true that because you get infected with omicron it will keep you immune from delta. It goes without saying that your antibodies decline over time.

3 people with severe illness may not be a problem now. And it's certainly good news that omicron is less severe than delta for average person. That said, it's much more infectious than delta, so the more people that are infected, the greater potential it has for causing severe illness among those that are most vulnerable, as well as giving birth to newer variants.

Omicron won't be the last variant and it appears we'll certainly have to deal with covid in multiple waves for the foreseeable future.

Why are you worried? Or do you not trust the vaccine you took?

yes i do but i dont want hospital beds filled with covid pateints so if im in a car accident I can get a bed for myself or family. unvaxxed should be shown the back of the line if they get serious covid

Zia and Esteban and Iraira

That is exactly the point.

You got sick even you are double vaccinated.

And therefore more and more people are getting dissapointed from the vaccine.

People expect to stay healthy if they took the vaccine.

Including me.

-10 ( +9 / -19 )

Monty...

that's not how vaccines work, especially when dealing with something that produces virus-escape mutants.

-2 ( +8 / -10 )

Yep that’s what I expect too.

take the vaccine, don’t get COVID. Clear and simple.

we were even told that was true for like 2 weeks end of March to early April. Then, “breakthrough case” was born into our language.,

-10 ( +9 / -19 )

No big deal. Get your boosters if you so please and stay home. The rest of us will continue to go about our lives.

-8 ( +5 / -13 )

Just to mention, Omicron did not evolve from Delta, but from the original virus.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

so whats the problem for vaccinated people?

First, the people who are being requiring hospitalization and dying are significantly the unvaccinated.

The vaccine doesn't prevent infection. It reduces the probability of developing severe symptoms. The more the virus mutates, the less effective vaccines become. But they are still more effective than being unvaccinated.

If everyone were to get a vaccine for the dominant variant at the same time, then we'd have a chance to beat this like polio and measles.

But now it's going to be tough because the virus is too well spread. Mutations happen in everyone all the time. It's just the one of a million (colloquial phrase) that develops a mutation that can survive by having high transmissibility.

One of the most dangerous mistakes people are making is writing off omicron because the symptoms are mild. You're just giving it more chances to mutate into something deadly.

We were lucky that the original version of the virus wasn't a threat to children. But the next one might be and imagine what happens when it sweeps through schools.

Vaccination is our number one tool to get through this. Not just for ourselves, but for everyone. The more vaccinated people, the more antibodies are fighting the virus, the less the mutations and spread.

Frankly, I think people who refuses vaccinations are traitors to humanity.

Exponential increase.

4,400+ new cases today, including 174 at the airport for int'l arrivals (another new record).

With that many at the airports out of 3,500 max arrivals, whats the point of even being tested before departure?

5 ( +6 / -1 )

And after 2 yrs what are we to keep doing ??!

I don't understand.

Stay home forever ?

PAY ME TO STAY HOME THEN!!!

Or be quiet.

0 ( +12 / -12 )

People expect to stay healthy if they took the vaccine.

This is a common misunderstanding of what vaccines are. They are meant to prevent, or reduce severity, or even treat a disease. And I don't know why people expect these vaccines to do any of these 3 things with 100% effectivness. No vaccines do that, ever. These vaccines do prevent infection to some degree. These vaccines do reduce severity of disease to some degree. So, they do "work". Just not as much as everyone would like.

6 ( +12 / -6 )

@thelessdeceived

There is no redefinition of vaccine. That was always like that and, potentially, will always be as they will be people with some specific which will have the illness even thought they are vaccinated as long as the virus is still active. Will science evolve in a way these people can be accurately identified and solution be found to offer them an alternative vaccine which will be efficient for them, we do not know yet. So yes, vaccine are not 100% efficient and most of people are not twisting their panty over it because they already know it.

When the Covid arrived, about 2 percents died and 5-8 percents severely ill. Now Omicron is not more than a cold for most, milder than the flu. Three members of my family back home got it and my father in his mid seventies only did a test as recommended by his doctor after visiting him for a different issue.

Now, the more infected, the more chance than some go to the hospital like the flu.

Just screaming the numbers of infected everyday does not make any does not make any sense.

In Europe delta is still there causing some deaths

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Increase in numbers, nationwide, seem in large part due to the infections of military service personnel in Okinawa . . . perhaps it is better to transfer sick military personnel to other parts of the world where they can better recuperate? . . . .

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

You have accepted the redefinition of vaccine.

Vaccines were always a prophylactic measure to prevent serious disease. That's what we all learned in biology from secondary school onwards.. I think there might be some confusion in that vaccines were traditionally an inactive version of the same disease whereas these ones are mRNA vaccines. But the definition and principle by which they work is the same.

A smallpox paper from the 1960s - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2604088/?page=4

"By inducing an actual though harmless infection with a live, virulent virus, related to that which causes serious disease, one also induces immunity to the serious disease".

I don't understand these frequent references to the redefinition of vaccines business frequently mentioned here. Like, what's the issue here?

Vaccines = stop serious illness = end of the pandemic = good.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

As an unvaxxed/not yet vaxxed/don’t plan to get vaxxed person, I will try to be healthy and not getting the COVID or flu as I have managed the last two years while maintaining my routines and do what I do best at work. For all others here please get vaxxed if you think you are comfortable with it and don’t get infected and blame it on others. Thanks .

-7 ( +4 / -11 )

You have accepted the redefinition of vaccine. Timely done so you can post stuff like this. See CDC then and now.

The CDC may well have changed the definition on their site. But if you look at any medical dictionary before covid was even a thing, you'll see what I'm saying is true.
