In Tokyo, the number (377 men and 290 women) is the result of 9,458 tests conducted on April 13. By age group, people in their 20s (200 cases) and their 30s (132) accounted for the highest numbers, while 91 cases were aged 60 and over.

I'd always assumed that when it says. "The number of people with severe symptoms is down 6 from yesterday"

that was a kind of polite way of explaining the "official" death figures.

You know, like when a "human accident" delays the train.

Olympic cancellation incoming, pressure mounting, I expect one of those preemptive thinking about cancellation gov press releases any day now ( which means it's been decided but we want to let the public think we are considering) then a week later it's been decided.

"The number of cases is lower in Tokyo today than it was yesterday.... "

Right, but comparing it week by week:

16 April 667

9 April 537,

2 April 440,

26 March 394, and

19 March 303.

Useful post. Cheers.

Why that gets thumbed down is beyond me. Do some people not like knowing the numbers?

Strange.

Less tests less cases. It is called mathematics. Kobe has almost the same number of cases as Tokyo how does anyone believe that.

Where are the more tests in Tokyo promised by Koike and other politicians as an essential tool to fight the virus,, many times and as recently as a week or two ago? Some days it is only far less.

And BTW how is it that frequent testing of athletes is advocated as essential for the COVID safe Olympics plan but is obviously NOT an important factor for a COVID safe Tokyo! I guess they are saving the rest kits for the athletes who will be allowed in without any quarantine at all!

Don't worry everyone. [ Sarcasm ] The Japanese Government is on this and doing everything to ensure safe and happy outcome regarding the pandemic. Rest assured that the air you breath is fresh and delightful with the swift and abundant workings of Suga san and Koike san at the helm. Happily ignore the increase in COVID and go ahead and view sakura and eat bento. Nothing to worry about. Drink! Drink! Drink! We have cleared the air for you and your family. Happy thoughts now! You're in Japan.

@klausdorth & @jimizo

Thanks for the well-deserved spanking! But, if you have a reread, just a few short words later, I go on to say — as subtly as I can — that the small drop means absolutely nothing.

Honestly, no spanking intended from me, mate.

I was just commenting on what I saw as a useful post.

There is no way these “numbers’ are an accurate reflection of reality. So why bother with them?

I don’t see them as accurate, but they could help build a picture of an overall trend when taken in conjunction with hospitalizations and deaths. I’m in favour of mass testing for a clearer picture.

This comes up in our work meetings when planning where we are going in the short-term.

If you have any advice on other ways to help us out, please share it. No sarcasm here. Genuine request.

The information seems so basic. what always show men, women, ages? Does this happen in any other country?

How about providing more relevant information - the of R numbers, and of course daily vaccinations?

Good post. Like with the cases, I’d say it’s hard to get an accurate R number without mass testing, but it wouldn’t do any harm.

Why are people downvoting commonsensical posts like this? The poster is just asking for information.

Don’t some people like information?

Crikey, twice as many in Osaka than Tokyo!

Its Golden Week in two weeks' time and the tv has just said Shinkansen bookings are double to triple what they were last year, and only 20% down on a regular year. The last and biggest so far Covid-19 peak in Japan was just after New Year, the last holiday period.

The large amounts of deaths in the West and especially in Mexico can be attributed to high rates of obesity in these countries

Explain why Turkey, Algeria, Egypt, Venezuela, Canada and Iraq are faring better than France despite higher rates of obesity. Germany has higher rates of obesity than France but has fared better. South Africa has much, much higher rates of obesity than France but has fared much better.

I’m not saying obesity isn’t a factor ( I think it is ), but you are running with a simplistic narrative.

There seem to be other contributing factors at work here, but that doesn’t suit your narrative. You must see this.

Also, the idea that that obesity hasn’t been well publicized is flat out wrong. It’s been massively reported. To take one example, the PM of the UK basically told the people of the UK to lose the flab after his lardarse ended up in intensive care. That’s about as publicized as it gets.

Also, you didn’t deal with this:

What source or numbers do you have in mind when you post ‘not as deadly to the healthy as it’s made out to be’? How about the vulnerable? Whose figures are you refuting here?

7 ( +9 / -2 )

I'd always assumed that when it says. "The number of people with severe symptoms is down 6 from yesterday"

That’s probably what they want people to think. Because is vastly understates the deaths. What most people fail to understand with this statistic is that people get added to this list every day, not just subtracted. If 30 people die in one day, but 24 people are added to the list, the number goes down by 6. But 30 people died.

indeed, I fear many have temporary insanity caused by the West’s media hysteria

I don’t think the death toll in some Western countries ( US, UK, France, Italy, Germany etc. ) can be just dismissed as a storm in a teacup. South America has also been hit hard and the steep rise in India’s cases is a real concern given its massive population and poor health infrastructure.

That said, horses for courses. The situation in Japan, like almost all Asian and African countries, is not the same as these places at the moment. I don’t think a lockdown is warranted in Japan.

By the way, what source or numbers do you have in mind when you post ‘not as deadly to the healthy as it’s made out to be’? How about the vulnerable? Whose figures are you refuting here?

Crikey, twice as many in Osaka than Tokyo!

Yup, well, Osaka also conducts twice as many tests than Tokyo. 17,792 today.

This summer we should have barbecues!

Let’s see what the situation is in summer, eh?

Some hysterical types can jump the gun and get carried away with narratives. Best call for calm and rationality at the moment.

The other night when I coming from work in Shibuya and heading for the train station, I saw hundreds and hundreds of young people (and some old people too) hanging outside of the "closed" bars and restaurants. They were all sitting around on the streets and sidewalks, right near Shibuya Mark City, some standing, all loud and partying and getting drunk from all the conbini beer that is freely available to them all hours of the night. So much for SOE and Quasi-SOE measure. I'd say the people of Japan are SOL!

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Osaka needs to enforce strict, state of emergency measures, just as Tokyo has done . . . . including social distancing measures, public awareness signage, . . . investigate where group infections are occurring . . . .

you lock yourself down if you want. ill continue my life thanks very much.

No, you won’t. Think about it from a logical point of view. Half of the people, the more rational, fearful, quiet etc. lock themselves in. Then you’re outside with your ‘life’, only surrounded by crazy, wild, pandemic denying etc. people, who make parties, crimes, looting, anything, you name it. What will happen? Exactly, you’ll be probably the first one of the remaining who insists of also better be locked in quickly. Got it? Yes, a little bit, right?

1 ( +8 / -7 )

The numbers? Almost meaningless. Does anyone think they are accurate?

0 ( +8 / -8 )

Close all restaurants at 7.30pm!

0 ( +7 / -7 )

If Japan did mass vaccinations like Israel (61% vaccinated) did, it would have reached herd immunity by the start of the Olympics, fully open to tourism and influx of money.

Instead we're stuck at 0.93% vaccination rate with no plan to speed things up.

I wouldn't be surprised if five years from now, the rest of the world has moved on and Japan is still stuck with masking and closing restaurants at 8pm.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Not negotiable, Immediate lock down.

@Jimizo

The large amounts of deaths in the West and especially in Mexico can be attributed to high rates of obesity in these countries. The facts are out there which show this but it is nit highly reported for some reason. The underlying health problems caused by obesity are also a huge factor. In Japan the obesity rate is under 5% which means that severe cases in non seniors are extremely rare.

The vulnerable would be the elderly and those with underlying health conditions. In Japan the elderly are more active and in better health than the West. There are less adults with underlying health issues due to low obesity.

obesity is the main problem with Covid deaths though and the death rates in countries with high obesity rates bears this out

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

@Jimizo

The threat is the BS pushed by Western media like this is the end of humanity if people don’t wear masks etc.

I still stand by the obesity rates 100%, of course other factors come into issue like healthcare by nation etc. However the main one is the obesity when it comes to hospitalization and deaths in the young and adults

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

yes I will actually. not a single person on this planet isgoinf to stop me from living my life.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Seriously, think about it. There is some guy at TMG throwing a dart at a board. He’s been doing it for the past year. And people here have been obsessing for the past year about the number his dart hits. Is that a productive use of your time? There is no way these “numbers’ are an accurate reflection of reality. So why bother with them?

you lock yourself down if you want. ill continue my life thanks very much.

-9 ( +6 / -15 )

Life continues as normal where I live, I see no changes except less people wearing masks. Please don’t believe the hype from the West and panic guys. Carry on life as normal and enjoy the Spring weather with your love ones. This virus is vey little threat to those in good health. If you are obese concentrate on losing weight, the main killer from Covid. Take reasonable precautions like I do and do no worry yourself too much

@falseflagsteve.

seems a lot of people cant handle the truth. they prefer economic ruin, decades of debt and rising taxes, not to mention the devastation it causes upon peoples sanity.

-10 ( +4 / -14 )

You know what they should be reporting daily is the number of people who've lost their jobs. And there should be documentaries on the impacts to businesses and people's lives. And to give everyone hope, show people getting jobs and picking up their lives again. This summer we should have barbecues!
