I'm leaving Japan for the first time in over 3 years next week to go home. This really is the best window we'll have to do so as I believe Japan will tighten border restrictions again the moment a new variant emerges.

Nice. Safe happy travels!

@stickman1760: Agree, too many lazy people here who moan about not being able to get tested (for free) or say they can't get a booster. It's easy, very - even if it does require a little research.

@Rob - You make an awful lot of negative comments about Japan here considering you've just let on you are not even here. This forum is generally residents posting for whom the borders ARE open. Your posts suddenly count for very little.

@Monty? Memory loss? Come on mate. That was just a hangover.

I've had 3 Moderna, was expecting the worst with the booster after the horrible day after the second shot, but it was fine, and I add for most that I know. At worst a few low fevers.

Spot on comments by falseflagsteve and farmboy.

get vaxxed, get boosted and tested as much as you feel comfortable with but please, stop the panicking and live life to the fullest.

compared to many other countries Japan, for reasons we may never know, is quite safe.

Extremely high numbers for Okinawa.

This is the time to stay inside, or if you must go outside, shop at off-peak times, and mask up.

Eat and drink at home.

Mr McCarthy

we have been in a worldwide pandemic, people die, we all have to accept that. The majority that died were elderly who were already in very poor health or the obese. You could say Covid discriminates against them as the death rate for healthy non seniors is minuscule.

Omicron is even less deadly as it does not effect the lungs in the way previous variants did, which led sometimes to other organs being damaged.

You bang in so much about caring for others, but what do you do? Have a vaccine and a booster? You can still catch Omicron and transmit it, you are protecting yourself against the minute risk of sever symptoms unless of course you are an obese man whereas the risks would be considerably higher.

What could cause such an outbreak recurrence? . . . .

There are at least three free pcr testing centers near where I live. I go regularly. It’s very easy to go. When you arrive you sign a form saying they can send the results to the govt if you test positive. It’s much better than the testing back in my home country where you have to pay.

I suspect a lot of the foreigners whinging here about lack of testing are simply too lazy to do the minimum required to find out where the free testing sights are.

The borders are already open

If the borders were open I'd be able to enter to see my partner of 5 years. So no, the borders are not open.

The fact I can enter Hong Kong but not Japan is an embarrassment.

Still early but graphs in toyokeizai seems to suggest daily cases and deaths bottomed out and are now level.

Hopefully they don't rise up again and points downwards again instead:

The borders are already open . And with Omicron running wild and killing more people just this calendar year , it is factually speaking, the deadliest variant of Covid in Japan to date.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

Don't know about that. Seems a bit arrogant to suggest such things to me. Magical Japanese way hasn't dealt very well with Omicron at all, unfortunately.

I'm not Japanese so not boasting - that's just what the data is telling me. I've always found it remarkable that Japan does so well without heavy restrictions.

Even with omicron that cannot be dealt with the same way as previous variants - many countries have just accepted it can't be controlled - Japan is still doing remarkably well compared to its neighbours.

Just do be different, or is there a reason for that?

It just always has done. Personally, I don't think there's much to be gained from mass testing. All it does is cause needless panic.

Open the border already.

Covid's here to stay and, thankfully, on a case-by-case basis not as deadly as it once was.

I just can’t buy into the premise that “very few healthy individuals in Japan die from Covid.” Nor the oft repeated statements about the elderly or morbidly obese. But for Covid, 29000 people in Japan wouldn’t be dead …. From Covid. Who thinks like that? It’s not okay nor acceptable. But what to expect from someone who denies reality and is anti everything as related to Covid. No matter how much spin someone wants to put on it , Omicron is the deadliest variant of Covid in Japan to date. Jan 2022 to date have been the deadliest 3 months period . And what about all those patently false predictions that just aren’t coming to fruition. Cases aren’t falling. We’re stuck on a plateau. And yes . If Japan would once and for all do proper testing, contact tracing testing , we could then start to better grasp just how bad this really is . With over 200000 new cases each week this year , we all know or should be able to accept reality that Covid is still raging out of control.Fake Cherry blossoms? Ha …. Who cares . I think Kishida should go ahead and impose all these draconian restrictions people are constantly whining about when reality is , we’ve never had any . Departure, entry and re-entry border controls? 25000¥ each way in or out for a PCR test . Whatever…. Get vaccinated and/or boosted . Stop acting as if this is all okay . Stop devaluing people’s lives and start to care about others health.

Nagano going up week on week. Hopeful as it gets warmer people spending less time inside we level off

@ffs: Even if 10 people had died, how could that be a 'lark'? How insulting to the families of those that have unfortunately died from, or 'with' Covid.. However you wish to define it today.

I was never in favour of lockdowns or mass testing once we'd passed a certain point, but come on.. A 'lark'???

10 ( +11 / -1 )

But somehow to state this readily apparent fact is paradoxically denounced as "conspiracy theory " by posters on this site.

I think it's a conspiracy theory when people say that testing numbers are manipulated by the government. Especially before an election or the expiration of state of emergency restrictions when many users of this site say the numbers are being being fudged.

The numbers have always been real and Japan tests differently to other countries. All you have to do is look at how the death rate compares to the testing rate.

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

Dagon,

Please no more testing conspiracies. Nothing to see here, all going ok, severe cases and deaths crash down and don’t forget there have been very few healthy individuals die in Japan from Covid for a population this size.

Im on a trip, very busy, seems like this Covid Lark never happened.

Because they test properly

But somehow to state this readily apparent fact is paradoxically denounced as "conspiracy theory " by posters on this site.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Well, there is still 120 millions who did not catch the Covid. And the more boosters, the more infected (cf other countries)

So the story is far from over.

@Ashley

your reports are often pessimistic. Be more positive

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

Get boosted!

I got boosted already!

Damned hard side effects!

High fever and horrible headache.

Including a memory loss, which was just temporary.

Don't be too harsh.

Yes, you a right!

Sorry to the posters above!

-7 ( +7 / -14 )

But how can the other posters understand that???

Maybe he doesn't live in Japan, or just forgot that March 21st was a national holiday. Don't be too harsh.

It does seem that numbers are going up again though. My prefecture had its highest for over a month today.

Get boosted!

3 ( +7 / -4 )

Probably because last Monday was a holiday.

So far for today in this thread, you are the only poster who used his brain before posting something like;

More than double last Tuesday?

I wonder why it's going up?

But how can the other posters understand that???

How the numbers reporting system works in Japan was just explained 1000s of times.
