78 on all of Tokyo... I'd say there are about 78 just in that photo.

I recognize Ueno when I see it

Yeah and meanwhile down here in Okinawa we have 142 new cases, 44 locally, and 98 among the US military!

Whomever made the comment a few days ago about the "military" numbers dropping, mmmm, you wrong!

I always noticed that figures and Japan grows far more linearly than the countries which test normally, showing a maximum is attained because for sure of test restrictions commonly commented here.

A virus propagation is never so "linear", especially with coming omicron.

Crowds upon crowds. Look for number of infections to grow exponentially over the next two to three weeks.

@Oxycodin

Yep it’s slow creeping up… what is government doing?

Assessing the situation so they can finally give booster shot after the infections have peaked.

A number of 1 person hospitalized with severe symptons in Tokyo.

The total number is 49 among those with severe symptons

I know there are more people in hospital, but I guess this number are those who have mild symptons? Am I right to say that?

Was out for a drive and major roads in the neighborhood were still crowded… Seemed a lot of folks remain in town this year,again.

Yep it’s slow creeping up… what is government doing?

Waiting to cash in on those New Year's sales before they shut down operations again. Remember, it's money first; lives second.

Also, that picture is grim - I get not wanting the virus to overtake our lives but that picture is a stark representation of people's complete disregard for the current situation. Go out and live your lives but for goodness sakes', be smart about it.

Omicron is mild. Its been around for almost two months now. Yet, "there are still unknowns" apparently. Its probably widespread, but are you supposed to go to the hospital if you have the sniffles or mild fever? And will your doctor know what variant you have? They should be doing random checks around the country if they really want to know. Just relying on serious cases that come into the hospital isn't accurate.

The picture for this article looks like a morning rush hour train…..yet we see it on the streets

Over 500 000 cases in America yesterday alone. Over 1 000 000 cases over the past 2 days. European countries cases are exploding. All the while professional sporting teams and LOOSENING their Covid protocols.

Japan is so far ahead of this that its no longer sane to even mention it.

And we finally have our "look at other countries, it's worst" guy.

Note for future problems in Japan : you can't always find worst but that's doesn't solve the internal situation

Bad news.

Virus is coming back, be careful everyone!

SmithinJapan - The number of new cases may change with more test, but will it change the number os death on last two days?

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

December 29 - 466 new cases - 4 deaths.

December 30 - 490 new cases - 0 deaths.

The number of cases are increasing little by little. I wonder if this number of cases are related to people traleving other prefectures.

Very good news!

And probably 0.001% of the population were able to get tested, given that it's New Year's Eve and ZERO clinics will be open, and nearly as many hospitals for testing. So, it's like about 1000 times that number. And packed in like that... whew. Can't be asking why when next week talk returns to students going back to online learning and then preparing the next State of Emergency. Well done, people, you've shown that you truly are incapable of learning.

438 People who tested positive with 1 in the hospital. Japan's population for 2021 is 125,898,724.

One should be more afraid of sensationalized journalism

@rob Nads

it was clearly just a spelling mistake… it happens to me all the time when I type too fast and the auto fill kicks in

he clearly meant to say “Panicked” in reference to those above who are worried

The numbers are far worse outside of Japan; nearly 600,000 new cases in the United States yesterday. What happens when Omnicron has washed over the rest of the world and caused widespread immunity? Will Japan stay closed to the rest of the world for all of 2022? Or forever?

Going down Namba with missus, already a bit wasted.

Go out and don’t live in fear

Happy New Year to all including those who disagree with me

Totally agree with you. Enjoy なんば... I miss that place and the Dotonburi river!

Well done, people, you've shown that you truly are incapable of learning.

Japan has done and is doing better than most nations. And without infringing on peoples rights. Yes, well done, and no sarcasm needed.

Naisu!

People so irresponsible to be packed in like that. Clearly shows alot of people couldn't care less about this virus.

Get a life, Thomas.

@Oxycodin

Closing borders tight and distribute antiviral drugs to cure the virus.

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

@Larr Flint 110 % agreed

Numbers, numbers, numbers

Go outside, have fun, enjoy your life, don't follow numbers, get detox from internet.
