Covid has done little to change my life in 2 years anyway - apart from overseas travel, as I cannot work from home. So, train, bus, bars, restaurants have never been off for me. Has wearing a mask on the train and in shops really degraded my life? No. Has being vaccinated degraded my life? No. In fact, its made it easier as I now can travel without quarantine.

Have I asked you to wear a mask or to get a vaccine? No. Do I care? No.

Can you provide a citation or link for the data sets. I have never been able to find adequate government statistics for average age of death, preexisting conditions, or other data points you mention. I have used Toyokeizai which puports to be aggregate reporting of data sourced from official goverment numbers, however as it doesn't align with the data you provide, I would like to review to data sets you used.

Rob, your calculation is wrong - to get it in % you need to multiply the ratio by 100, so death rate is actually 0.46% according to the simple ratio of recorded positive cases to recorded deaths. Of course, probably loads more cases missed through lack of testing plus probably a fair few deaths put down to other causes so you can certainly take that figure with a huge pinch of salt.

The population isn't 38 million. It's 14 million. Why do some people here struggle with this number?

To be honest I think Japans response has been on point for the most part. Australia on the other hand has been draconian to put it politely. Unvaccinated peeps still unable to leave the country or in certain states to go out to a restaurant, pub, movie etc. Even in light of the fact that most cases now and those spreading the illness are amongst the 94% vaccinated. My belief has always been that vaccinations should have been targeted towards high risk groups as the mRNA vaccines whatever the hype have only been in serious human circulation for the last 1.5 years.

I miss Japan but not as much as my Japanese wife who has bouts of well hidden depression. Especially at Hanami time when we would be visiting her parents.

Yet someone still call’s for a lockdown and then says he he doesn’t, basically says the same thing over and over again but still doesn’t give any facts but says what his opinion is in FACT . Paste and repeat. Majority on here give good arguments on both sides of the coin but the ones that pop up after 2 years well

Seems we’re stuck on the plateau. New cases , severe cases, daily death counts just aren’t falling as falsely predicted. I wish they’d publish the daily numbers of people in hotels , or worse home , and hospitalized without severe symptoms. Then some might be able to grasp just how much strain there is on the healthcare system. I’d sure hate to have the need for other medical treatment for other medical emergencies. Such as a stroke or heart attack. A severe auto or work related accident. I’m still not sure what restrictions people are still whining about. Any idea? The point some just don’t have the ability to comprehend about bars and restaurants is simple , when we go grocery shopping or to a convenience store, we’re in and out . A few minutes. But when you go to the bar or restaurant, you’re there for an hour or two. And that’s the reason they have tried to limit possible exposures in them. And for those who continue to whine about “moving on,” “getting on” with life , I personally have not had a single day off from work because of Covid. My wife and I get up and go to work everyday. Even when multiple schools around us have had to close for a few days , including ours , we still went to work . I personally missed my mother’s funeral in July and couldn’t visit at any time prior because of travel restrictions and re-entry quarantine requirements here in Japan at that time . So I do understand some people’s pain or frustrations. But the constant whining about “opening up” is just that ; whining about something that is really nothing. If you miss karaoke, go ahead … go . But to act like everyone else is a fear monger is just patently false. Have I stated many times over that a hard lockdown is needed ? Absolutely and I still think 3 weeks would solve many Covid related issues, fewer cases, fewer deaths , the healthcare system could recover. Children under 10 would stop leading the daily surge in new cases. 2 children under 10 have died from Covid in the last 10 days . 1 in Kanagawa and 1 in Kyoto. But we cannot learn to live with Covid until people stop dying from it in record numbers. And no . This isn’t some flu and statistics from any other country do not apply here in Japan. Specifically because omicron is the deadliest variant of Covid in Japan to date. And Japan has never done the testing to see how big the problem really is , or isn’t .

Sounds like it is time to stop with the curfews and “pseudo” measures and open up!
