The Tokyo metropolitan government on Saturday reported 9,164 new coronavirus cases, up 700 from Friday and down 1,642 from last Saturday.
By age group, 1,448 cases were in their 20s, 1,572 in their 30s and 1,578 in their 40s, while 1,303 were aged between 10 and 19, and 1,742 younger than 10.
The number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms in Tokyo is 62, up four from Friday, health officials said. The nationwide number is 1,204, down 48 from Friday.
Nationwide, the number of reported cases was 55,328. After Tokyo, the prefectures with the most cases were Osaka (5,579), Kanagawa (4,771), Saitama (3,904), Aichi (3,574), Chiba (2,984), Hyogo (2,639), Fukuoka (2,523), Ibaraki (1,748), Hokkaido (1,701), Kyoto (1,165), Shizuoka (1,200), Shiga (798), Miyagi (771), Nara (738), Hiroshima (728), Gunma (710), Okinawa (679), Kumamoto (645), Tochigi (544), Okayama (438), Gifu (529), Aomori (524), Niigata (436), Mie (433), Kagawa (431), Fukushima (430), Kagoshima (395), Fukui (392), Nagano (389), Toyama (385), Ishikawa (358), Saga (315), Nagasaki (310), Yamaguchi (303), Ehime (302), Yamagata (273), Oita (264), Iwate (253), Miyazaki (245), Yamanashi (235), Tokushima (231), Akita (213) and Kochi (164).
The number of coronavirus-related deaths reported nationwide was 141.

Does anybody has any idea of the extension of the pandemic in Tokyo?

The amount of testing done in Japan is very low, so no doubt there have been many missed cases. Nationally we are registering around 50-60000 cases a day, but very close to here in S. Korea they have close to 400000 cases a day with half the population and a similar number of people dying which suggests that we might recording as few as 20% of the actual number of people infected. The only way we'd really be able to get any idea about how many people have been really infected would be to maybe do some quite large scale and properly randomized antibody testing.

Once the quasi-SoE ends it's time to open to the world again. Covid doesn't check your passport. Everyone's equal when it comes to catching the virus.

I hope the jgov finally will get with the program and ramp up testing. At 50000 plus in new cases everyday; and we know that number is artificially low, it’s way past time for the jgov to take this horrible pandemic seriously. Hundreds of thousands of current cases , the healthcare system can’t even keep up with just Covid let alone all other medical emergencies. Add in the omicron is the deadliest and most virulent variant in Japan to date: we’re no where near getting this disaster behind us . Children still leading the surge, this fire is still burning out of control. The hope that it would just burn out is just that…. False hope . Typically, the Japanese are reactive to everyday issues , but not Covid. We’ve never had proper testing, never had any serious restrictions, I would think with children starting to die as reported that the jgov would get with the program but instead, still waiting for ???
