Are you telling me that quasi SOE is actually working? So when there's no SOE, people just don't care about basic hygiene - stop wearing masks, close windows in the office, start indiscriminate coughing without covering their mouths again...

There's no need to panic. The only numbers that matter are people who are seriously ill and those who have passed away, and distinguishing between people in those conditions directly due to covid or who just happen to have tested positive. Simple case counting is pointless and inaccurate anyway.

@ justasking

Unfortunately, I think that is actually the case. It seems that there are people out there who believe that if a State of Emergency comes to an end - even when there hasn't been any news of the actual end of COVID - people feel that they can stop taking many precautions, most certainly including all of the ones you listed in your comment. It's truly a shame. (Where has common sense gone?) I hope we will not see the numbers continue to increase and end up right back where we started. Taking basic everyday precautions is such an easy thing to do.

I'm not seeing that myself. I haven't noticed people any more maskless or careless than previously. People taking a stroll in the park are still wearing them.

Maybe, just maybe, the trained & qualified scientific people who designed the quasi SoE measures know more than the public. Who'd have thunk it eh?

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

We don’t need (never needed) the government to micromanage our activity - they could focus on keeping the hospitals well prepared and vulnerable groups well supported..

People understand the risk and are quite able to take sensible measures on a personal level to stay healthy - hygiene, vaccination, eating well staying/getting in good shape .. or whatever works for the individual.

Do people still care about corona?

-4 ( +15 / -19 )

Most likely BA2 kicking into gear. Plenty of other countries have seen the same pattern. Huge spike from BA1, followed by a small decline, then a plateau or slight rise as BA2 takes hold. After some initial reports it may be more severe than BA1, consensus now seems to be it's no worse than BA1. Not over yet, but no need to panic. It's going to do what it's going to do.

4 ( +13 / -9 )

Fuzzy is correct, BA2 will more likely be the main variant now as we have seen on those countries who were hit with Omicron first. They have dealt with this by carrying on as usual, knowing transmission to all is inevitable, vaxxed, unvaxxed, you’ll get it. Sooner, better than later may be the best, it provides good immunity going ahead, far stronger and longer than the vaccines. Just a reminder, the current boosters are still based on immunization against the previous variants. They don’t work well, luckily this variants is very mild and unlikely to effect the non elderly, obese or severely ill

-11 ( +9 / -20 )

@falseflagsteve

FFS, fact check.

2 ( +11 / -9 )

Another increase. Junk science from any other country does not apply here in Japan. Specifically and factually speaking, Omicron is the deadliest variant of Covid in to date . This calendar year have been the 3 deadliest months compared to any other top 3 months. It’s not milder . Not when healthy children have recently died from Covid. Not when the healthcare system over stretched. Not when children are still leading the daily surge in new cases. It is NOT inevitable that everyone will be and must be infected. Those still chasing herd immunity will never comprehend basic facts. Those that are anti everything as related to Covid will always and only spread patently false information and crazy predictions. Luckily, the masses are vaccinated here which is by far the best way to help yourself and the healthcare system. I still find it appalling that someone still thinks it’s okay if the elderly, obese, or say someone born with childhood diabetes are most likely to have severe symptoms and possibly die . Omicron does not discriminate. Get vaccinated. Wear a mask indoors. Keep your time indoors limited to the absolute bare minimum. Avoid crowds , avoid rooms that aren’t well ventilated. Do your part to help avoid getting infected and spreading this virus . Responsibly enjoy life. Or be prepared for the “draconian measures” we’ve never had but some constantly whine about.

People still care about Covid. I know several families in Tohoku who are still pretty much staying home on weekends to avoid exposure.

Lucky you! I seem to be surrounded by them, but maybe it just depends on where you live. There's also been a noticeable increase of people on the trains who aren't wearing masks and don't cover their mouths when they cough. Just happened with an old lady across from me on the train today.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

I don't know why you got a bunch of downvotes Foreigner in Tokyo, but you are absolutely right. The SOE really did instill fear enough to make people be at least semi-cautious, even if that's all it did. Now though...

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Just what I'm afraid of hopefully it will get arrested soon, a slight but definite uptick in cases and deaths according to the graphs:

https://toyokeizai.net/sp/visual/tko/covid19/en.html

Be safe everyone.

Remember if you're not infected with covid virus, you have no chance of dying of it

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Seems to me if folks wanna discuss this they should use the variant all the time, like BA2, and not Covid anymore.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Fukuoka numbers zooming up. Okinawa up again. Getting out of control.

Stay home. Wear masks if you must go out. Stay away from crowds.

You can go look at these trees next year and the years after.

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

Seems to me if folks wanna discuss this they should use the variant all the time, like BA2, and not Covid anymore.

Well you can start in that case.

Can you please tell us the relative prevalence now of the different variants?

We need to at least establish that ba2 is the most prevalent

3 ( +3 / -0 )

There's no need to panic. The only numbers that matter are people who are seriously ill and those who have passed away

Never a need to panic.

Anyway all data are important, not just those

2 ( +4 / -2 )

what’s weird is that I’m the only one in my family who hasn’t gotten covid (all have recovered within a few days) and I’m not even vaxxed. Nor do I wear a mask when walking outside…

however I can’t even remember having the flu in the last 15 years (which I also have never gotten a shot for)

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Can you please tell us the relative prevalence now of the different variants?

Yeah,!no thanks. Waste of time IMO.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

In the state where I live now, all mask mandates ended a month ago and all of the plastic shields have come down. Covid is considered ended.

It also ended for the 386 people who died last week and 455 would died the week before in the state from Covid. The data has to come directly from hospitals because the state doesn’t track it anymore. It’s over!

Perception is everything.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Nor do I wear a mask when walking outside…

How responsible of you

Nor do I. Hard to believe for some that folks don’t live in crowded Tokyo or Osaka or…..

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Well, I think location is irrelevant in this case @FizzBit

It's common courtesy, is it not? And anyway, people who come here to write that they 'don't wear a mask'-it just seems to be a way of making a point.

I don't understand that.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

truth be told, out of pure courtesy I put my sheer meaningless mask on if I go inside a convenience store or the train etc. It’s not for my own sake.

but when walking outside… come on, that’s pure lunacy. I will only extend that courtesy to a point.

Seems to me if folks wanna discuss this they should use the variant all the time, like BA2, and not Covid anymore.

spot on bro.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

These numbers are going to keep skyrocketing.

This is getting out of control.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

The only way I’m going to be concerned or convinced that this is anywhere is close to being out of control is by seeing skyrocketing severe symptoms and deaths and their demographics and stats showing me that healthy young people are dying and being hospitalized. Seeing stats of people being infected is meaningless if there’s no danger.

Alas, this means I’m never going to be convinced because that information will never be shown.

I suspect if we were shown the stats of the current LOW number of severe cases and deaths it will be mixed with people who died “with” and not “from” along with incredibly unhealthy people who were very susceptible to infection.

can you imagine the lawsuits that would follow if what I’m saying is true??? that fact alone would guarantee that the truth would never come to light.

of course that is just pure speculation

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Perception is everything

Yes. And perception is easily shaped.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Yeah,!no thanks. Waste of time IMO.

Well it's to support your other opinion.

But yeah that is a waste of time for that reason

0 ( +0 / -0 )

96 deads?

too many or too little?

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

I am not sure where some of the commentators live but I see pretty much everyone still wearing masks on trains, buses and walking around shopping malls.

I am not sure where some of the commentators live but I see pretty much everyone still wearing masks on trains, buses and walking around shopping malls.

We can see people without masks everywhere but like you said it's probably more true that pretty much everyone still wears masks regularly than not

It's just that many people have a propensity for seeing and passing off exceptions as the rule

A lot of US states are lifting the restrictions too, but many private businesses are still imposing them. And antivaxx nonsense is still wildly rampant in the US media and the state governors are caving in to their and businesses' pressures. They are weaklings and wussies. And the state school boards don't care about the kids either. Even worse since it's now springtime.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This is going to be a classic repeat of last year. The government ended the winter State of Emergency around springtime, only to reinstate it a few weeks later. Then the continued State of Emergency lasted for half a year, through the Tokyo Olympics until the fall. And foreigners were prevented from entering the country the whole time.

They are going to do the same thing this year, but this time they are going to call it a Quasi State of Emergency because they are under the impression that endless booster shots are somehow providing enough value to drop the panic level down a notch?

The best thing to do at this point, if you want things to return to normal, is to stop following the governments suggestions altogether. Stop wearing a mask. Don't get the fifth booster shot, don't even get the fourth. Support bars and restaurants that defy curfews and alcohol bans during inevitable future SOEs.

The point should be to make Japan realize how much money they are wasting through all these measures.
