Tokyo reports 925 new coronavirus cases; record-high 1,260 in Osaka

The Tokyo metropolitan government on Wednesday reported 925 new coronavirus cases, the result of 7,942 tests conducted on April 25, up 97 from Tuesday. It is the highest figure for Tokyo since Jan 28.

Osaka again topped the nation's tally with a record daily high 1,260 cases, surpassing the previous high of 1,242 on April 21.

In Tokyo, people in their 20s (255 cases) and their 30s (176) accounted for the highest numbers, while 127 cases were aged 60 and over.

The number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms in Tokyo is 53, down two from Tuesday, health officials said. The nationwide figure is 953, up 37 from Tuesday.

Nationwide, the number of reported cases was 5,780. After Osaka and Tokyo, the prefectures with the most cases were Hyogo (600), Fukuoka (440), Aichi (323), Kanagawa (257), Saitama (224), Hokkaido (219), Chiba (144), Kyoto (140), Nara (104), Okayama (87), Ibaraki (70), Gunma (64), Okinawa (63), Hiroshima (60), Mie (60), Gifu (56), Kumamoto (55), Shiga (45), Fukushima (43), Miyagi (42), Nagano (42) and Ehime (38).

The number of coronavirus-related deaths reported nationwide was 48 as of 6:30 p.m.

Closing in on 1000 again. Koike must be so proud. Wait. She is not paying attention because she is getting ready for those "#($! Olympics

These are the numbers from Sunday - 2074 tests, 46% positive. Data from link in the article.

I was hoping to go to Japan in October/November - just asked if I can rebook for next year... no way will Japan be ready for foreign tourists by the autumn

@Derek Grebe.

The photo and the people are just fine.

If you wanna lay blame start with the packed trains at rush hour and offices with NO social distancing!!

24 ( +27 / -3 )

2074 tests is just pathetic. They are not even trying.

Oh they're trying very hard to keep the numbers down by not testing.

20 ( +22 / -2 )

If its like this now, I shudder to think about the numbers after GW. My guess: expect 4 digit numbers from here on in.

18 ( +26 / -8 )

If these figures take three days to percolate through to the public realm, that would mean these are the result of tests carried out last weekend. So what are we talking - 5,000 tests carried out in Tokyo?

That's pretty close to 20% positivity.

But never mind - just don't have any fun for GW, then pack on your commuter trains immediately afterwards and everything will be fine, citizens.

Let's Heartful Olympic!

I was just there 1 day ago, Shake-shack, Bic camera, station, pubs, cafes at full capacity with no clue that a pandemic even existed.

Nice photo to illustrate some problems !

11 ( +18 / -7 )

It wouldn't hurt just to stand a bit more apart. This is what it's like at supermarkets here.

The reason why Japan has done better (though much worse than UK if we look at the current situation) than western countries is because there are fewer obese people, and they don't kick up a fuss about wearing masks. And the reason why Japan is doing so much worse than neighbouring countries is because the government here is useless and incompetent and corrupt. And not having a lockdown hasn't helped either.

11 ( +15 / -4 )

I see the new SoE measures are doing solidly. Maybe when we inevitably have another SoE after this one ends, they might actually start targeting the actual culprits, which are offices and companies who insist on their employees physically coming into work and thus packing themselves like cattle into already overcrowded trains.

5,780 new cases nationwide today.

Only 6 days in the history of Covid has there been a higher number.

Not enough testing, if nearly 50% are infected that were tested Japan has a serious problem

I thought the people were standing under an airplane wing at first.

That girl without a mask looks like she is holding a flask, so that is acceptable.

The numbers are creeping up and that is to be expected.

Ran down to Sagamiono and Machida today, and actually the places were pretty empty. So, it appears that people are listening to the suggestions on matters of the conditions to talk about and analyze the situation to decide when to decide on where they might issue shots.

By the way, Yamato City in kanagawa-ken put out a notice today. The elderly will recieve post cards sometime in May. During late June they can begin registering online. They broke down the ages of who gets a post card fiirst. The very elderly top the list. Going to city hall is not an option to register. Has to be done online or with a phone call. They also posted in Japanese but with kana over all kanji for gaijin the phone number to call. One phone number for about 50,000 people. Congratulations Yamato City.

Golden Week is upon us. The weather doesn't look particularly scorching, so maybe that and the rising numbers will convince the people in SoE prefectures to have a quiet one and start to turn this around.

It's a sad state when people can't get out and enjoy the spring for 2 years running, but the people in charge of getting a grip aren't doing their jobs.

Yup, must be nice in the sun, mask-less, enjoying some outdoor food!

Virus has been and still is increasing everywhere. Ehime recorded 38 (official count) new cases today, 6 of which are in "my area". One more day until Golden Week starts. Let's see what it looks like (the virus count) in 2 weeks from now.

Not increasing in places such as Israel, Gibraltar and even the UK. What do these places have in common?

VACCINES.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Instead, why not compare it with the cultural and geographical peers of Japan?

Good rhetorical question. But let's not spoil the Olympics. Let's just compare with Europe and America.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

@BT,

Exactly.

I was at a place in Tokyo just 4 days ago that let housewives play badminton against each other while not wearing masks and screaming every time they won a point.Albert Camus would be proud.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

By the way, food stores were very crowded today. Was not because of sales. It was because some fools think that shortening hours would magically make them less crowded when in fact it does just the opposite.

In America they opened the food stores for longer hours so that people would be more spread out. The issue in the states were the anti-mask people.

If they think shorter hours mean less people, then why not just allow food stores to open for an hour each day?

6 ( +10 / -4 )

953 serious cases against 53 in Tokyo only, wirh this last number hardly changing (in the 40s for months). No one wonders why such discrepancy between those numbers and spread of cases. It just shows scientifically that cases are underreported in Tokyo area.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Good thing nobody knows when the hell they're getting vaccinated yet.

If Japan doesn't cancel the Olympics soon, the world is going to cancel Japan.

Coronavirus RELATED deaths

they do not exist in Japan: no autopsies, no reporting if you got a negative PCR test before dying, not reported if you died at home/ or hotel.

5 ( +10 / -5 )

My gym is still open in Sakai, luckily. But they taped off the kids play equipment at the local park. Makes total sense.

yes many taped off parks.

well, more area for my kids to play, because a bit of tape isnt stopping me from letting them play there. total nonsense.

Gee, I wonder why we're still getting new cases?

I guess this is the reason America warned us not to go to Japan. However, been here for 20 years now. Should I go home?

July? That's mad. I'll have my second one by then... Honestly, where is the sense of urgency? Are they JGov not taking any note of what can happen when it gets out of control (India)?

Osaka again topped the nation's tally with a record daily high 1,260 cases, surpassing the previous high of 1,242 on April 21.

Moderator, I think it is time to state the tests numbers for Osaka so that an informed guess can be made whether the higher Osaka is due to osaka doing more test or the virus is more prevalent in Osaka. Without test numbers the number of positives mean nothing at all. Osaka is testing 17,000 and Kanagawa 3,000 that will tell us why one has higher number than the other.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

What is this photo? looks totally clean around them.

Not enough testing, if nearly 50% are infected that were tested Japan has a serious problem

53 people hospitalized with serious symptoms in all of Tokyo, that says it all... Sure, you can test 100x more people and get 100x more cases, but the number of serious cases and deaths has remained consistently low.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

925 cases in a city of 10 million?? No deaths mentioned?? So fw...

What is everyone so worried about!!!!!

@8T

sounds great, love Shake Shack, cafes and pubs too of course. Glad to know businesses there are doing fine despite the current restrictions.

Low obesity rates, high levels of cleanliness and a high level of fitness in the population makes this virus much less deadly than they claim.

Maybe , your statement is also only one of those theories. I could name not even one country, where such conditions that you demand , exist or could be established. Can you? Or have a look at those herd theories. Never reachable, in my opinion, at some places maybe, but never on a global scale. Then the tests and vaccines...that’s simple math. They are good for 90% immunity on paper and some under cleanest laboratory conditions. But in practice? A test by drive-thru in a parking lot, a vaccination with the cheapest vaccine in the African savanna and sun heat? You will be lucky, if you get 70% to 80% of true result testing or vaccinations. Even worse it becomes with those two-step vaccinations, that are considered the god-like solution. By far not. Even at 80% success, you can look at that Bayes tree yourself, you get only 64% full immunity, 32% reduced immunity and 4% with no vaccination at all, although got two injections received.. At 90%, 81% full, 18% reduced, 1% like not vaccinated at all, respectively. That only as an example for that the doom , like the preview in India, is nearer than the end of the pandemic.

We must all do our part to stay safe. Be responsible.

@ifd: That link is pretty useless. Does not list new deaths nor new cases for Japan, yet the news sources here do. And the site claims it uses news sources for its information.

Weird. Will search for a real site with good information.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

The conspiracy theorists are out in force again I see. Warning us of impending doom from this virus. Mark my words it’s not going to happen. Low obesity rates, high levels of cleanliness and a high level of fitness in the population makes this virus much less deadly than they claim. Maybe Covid should be a lesson to some nations that have had so many die despite lockdowns. Encourage fitness and weight loss as much as you do vaccines and the rates will be lower and society a better place for all.

"they do not exist in Japan: no autopsies"

"Someone" needs to learn when and in which circumstances autopsies MUST be performed; such basic knowledge should always precede any writings on the subject!

However, some do deserve to get autopsied regardless, whatever the weather.

"Government and stubborn, inflexible companies/workers have brought this upon themselves to be sadly honest."

Increasing cases and vaccines.

6 customers lined up in the photo - 2 not wearing masks correctly.

Give them a break and please stop to play your little dictator. The COVID-19 transmission has been showed to be essentially occurring by aerosolization making it almost physically impossible to be infected outside. Wearing a mask outside in most situations (like the one above) is not necessary.

The death rate is around 2% of positive cases, just like everywhere else.

No, no and no, again nonsense. You are confusing death rate (=mortality rate) with the case fatality rate. The death rate is certainly not 2%. The death rate is a measure of the number of deaths in a particular population, scaled to the size of that population, per unit of time. I leave you as an exercise to calculate it.

-10 ( +7 / -17 )

6 customers lined up in the photo - 2 not wearing masks correctly.

And where’s your problem with that? The four with masks breath out only a few viruses, that amount is halved and breathed in by the two without masks, so it’s very low and no infection. And the two without masks breath fully out, but that amount is breathed in by four people with masks, therefore filtered and halved and also not infectious. And the whole model plays outside, not in a closed room, so the concentrations are even much lower. Everything’s fine, just enjoy your lunchtime and don’t worry 24/7....lol The problems arise afterwards when they are all back in their office or commuter trains.

Lovely photo, good to see people waiting in expectation for some luncheon. Death remains low and life goes on for most of us. Just take sensible precautions and the risks are minute. I feel sorry for those with no income because of this SOE lark.
