If these figures take three days to percolate through to the public realm, that would mean these are the result of tests carried out last weekend. So what are we talking - 5,000 tests carried out in Tokyo?

That's pretty close to 20% positivity.

It wouldn't hurt just to stand a bit more apart. This is what it's like at supermarkets here.

The reason why Japan has done better (though much worse than UK if we look at the current situation) than western countries is because there are fewer obese people, and they don't kick up a fuss about wearing masks. And the reason why Japan is doing so much worse than neighbouring countries is because the government here is useless and incompetent and corrupt. And not having a lockdown hasn't helped either.

I see the new SoE measures are doing solidly. Maybe when we inevitably have another SoE after this one ends, they might actually start targeting the actual culprits, which are offices and companies who insist on their employees physically coming into work and thus packing themselves like cattle into already overcrowded trains.

Ran down to Sagamiono and Machida today, and actually the places were pretty empty. So, it appears that people are listening to the suggestions on matters of the conditions to talk about and analyze the situation to decide when to decide on where they might issue shots.

By the way, Yamato City in kanagawa-ken put out a notice today. The elderly will recieve post cards sometime in May. During late June they can begin registering online. They broke down the ages of who gets a post card fiirst. The very elderly top the list. Going to city hall is not an option to register. Has to be done online or with a phone call. They also posted in Japanese but with kana over all kanji for gaijin the phone number to call. One phone number for about 50,000 people. Congratulations Yamato City.

Golden Week is upon us. The weather doesn't look particularly scorching, so maybe that and the rising numbers will convince the people in SoE prefectures to have a quiet one and start to turn this around.

I was at a place in Tokyo just 4 days ago that let housewives play badminton against each other while not wearing masks and screaming every time they won a point.Albert Camus would be proud.

By the way, food stores were very crowded today. Was not because of sales. It was because some fools think that shortening hours would magically make them less crowded when in fact it does just the opposite.

In America they opened the food stores for longer hours so that people would be more spread out. The issue in the states were the anti-mask people.

If they think shorter hours mean less people, then why not just allow food stores to open for an hour each day?

953 serious cases against 53 in Tokyo only, wirh this last number hardly changing (in the 40s for months). No one wonders why such discrepancy between those numbers and spread of cases. It just shows scientifically that cases are underreported in Tokyo area.

Good thing nobody knows when the hell they're getting vaccinated yet.

Osaka again topped the nation's tally with a record daily high 1,260 cases, surpassing the previous high of 1,242 on April 21.

Moderator, I think it is time to state the tests numbers for Osaka so that an informed guess can be made whether the higher Osaka is due to osaka doing more test or the virus is more prevalent in Osaka. Without test numbers the number of positives mean nothing at all. Osaka is testing 17,000 and Kanagawa 3,000 that will tell us why one has higher number than the other.

53 people hospitalized with serious symptoms in all of Tokyo, that says it all... Sure, you can test 100x more people and get 100x more cases, but the number of serious cases and deaths has remained consistently low.

925 cases in a city of 10 million?? No deaths mentioned?? So fw...

Maybe , your statement is also only one of those theories. I could name not even one country, where such conditions that you demand , exist or could be established. Can you? Or have a look at those herd theories. Never reachable, in my opinion, at some places maybe, but never on a global scale. Then the tests and vaccines...that’s simple math. They are good for 90% immunity on paper and some under cleanest laboratory conditions. But in practice? A test by drive-thru in a parking lot, a vaccination with the cheapest vaccine in the African savanna and sun heat? You will be lucky, if you get 70% to 80% of true result testing or vaccinations. Even worse it becomes with those two-step vaccinations, that are considered the god-like solution. By far not. Even at 80% success, you can look at that Bayes tree yourself, you get only 64% full immunity, 32% reduced immunity and 4% with no vaccination at all, although got two injections received.. At 90%, 81% full, 18% reduced, 1% like not vaccinated at all, respectively. That only as an example for that the doom , like the preview in India, is nearer than the end of the pandemic.

We must all do our part to stay safe. Be responsible.

The conspiracy theorists are out in force again I see. Warning us of impending doom from this virus. Mark my words it’s not going to happen. Low obesity rates, high levels of cleanliness and a high level of fitness in the population makes this virus much less deadly than they claim. Maybe Covid should be a lesson to some nations that have had so many die despite lockdowns. Encourage fitness and weight loss as much as you do vaccines and the rates will be lower and society a better place for all.

Give them a break and please stop to play your little dictator. The COVID-19 transmission has been showed to be essentially occurring by aerosolization making it almost physically impossible to be infected outside. Wearing a mask outside in most situations (like the one above) is not necessary.

No, no and no, again nonsense. You are confusing death rate (=mortality rate) with the case fatality rate. The death rate is certainly not 2%. The death rate is a measure of the number of deaths in a particular population, scaled to the size of that population, per unit of time. I leave you as an exercise to calculate it.

And where’s your problem with that? The four with masks breath out only a few viruses, that amount is halved and breathed in by the two without masks, so it’s very low and no infection. And the two without masks breath fully out, but that amount is breathed in by four people with masks, therefore filtered and halved and also not infectious. And the whole model plays outside, not in a closed room, so the concentrations are even much lower. Everything’s fine, just enjoy your lunchtime and don’t worry 24/7....lol The problems arise afterwards when they are all back in their office or commuter trains.

Lovely photo, good to see people waiting in expectation for some luncheon. Death remains low and life goes on for most of us. Just take sensible precautions and the risks are minute. I feel sorry for those with no income because of this SOE lark.
