"The collision was avoidable and both ships demonstrated poor seamanship."

I take offense with this comment. The hit shows that the warship ignored the basic rules of the sea (basically not yielding and not giving priority when they should have given it). You can not expect such a massive cargo ship to initialize a dangerous avoiding maneuver with little chance of success anyway.

To blame the others for their own stupidity and arrogance is stupid, and, well, arrogant...

Jees, that must have been a catastrophic failure by the Navy in that situation for so many to be publicly disciplined like that.. The removing of the Commander "due to a loss of confidence in his ability to lead" says it all

Indeed the failed radar is still a pressing question that the Navy has yet to address.

This is a matter of human error. Radar is just one of many tools used in navigation- even at night. The officer of the deck screwed up, not the radar.

Somebody should be charged with manslaughter!

Yet the US Navy blames the merchant ship that could not get out of the way

Blame will eventually be assigned and accountability will follow... The Navy will do what it needs to do...

The important thing to point out though, is that lives were cut short that night and they are impossible to replace... ... and more would have been lost had it not been for brave men and women caring for each other and fighting the ocean to prevent an even bigger tragedy...

My sympathies to the families who lost loved ones... They all volunteered to serve and I appreciate their sacrifice.

Was channel fever a contributing factor?

What do you think?

However, the punishments

I want to see those responsible for the sailor's deaths and injuries incarcerated.

Hats off to those who risked all to help their fellow sailors. You acted heroically.

Has the USN completed and released their investigation conclusion? I don't recall USN ever making such a statement. In fact I only recall the reverse. Did I miss something?

Maybe they were drunk and didn't remember.
