The Japanese government, viewing ethnic Koreans as outsiders, welcomed the program and helped arrange for people to travel to North Korea.

So, doesn't the Japanese government bear some responsibility too?

Why isn't Japanese government found guilty as well?

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/05/world/asia/north-korea-japan-migration.html

As the Korean War came to an end, the Japanese government was eager to get rid of the throngs of Koreans living in slums. For its part, hoping to use them to help rebuild its war-torn economy, North Korea launched a propaganda blitz, touting itself as a “paradise” with jobs for everyone, free education and medical services.

Japan approved of the migration even though most Koreans in the country were from the South, which was mired in political unrest. While the Japanese authorities said ethnic Koreans had chosen to relocate to North Korea, human rights groups have accused the country of aiding and abetting the deception by ignoring the circumstances the migrants would face in the communist country.

And this

Most of the migrants were ethnic Koreans, but they also included 1,800 Japanese women married to Korean men and thousands of biracial children. Among them was a young woman named Ko Yong-hee, who would later become a dancer and give birth to Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea, and grandson of its founder.

If it wasn't for Japan's North Korea repatriation program, Kim Jong Un would never have been born, and North Korea would be ruled by Kim Jong Nam instead, whose solution to solving North Korea's problem was to hand over North Korea to the ROK and enjoy his retirement in Macau instead.

Yeah, only if KJU's father wished that it be so.

In case you don't believe that Kim Jong Nam's solution to ending North Korea's problems was the hand over of North Korea to the ROK, read this. Kim Jong Nam was extremely cooperative with the CIA and the ROK's intelligence agency, and the ROK actually tried to have Kim relocated in Seoul but Kim refused believing Kim Jong Un wouldn't attempt an assassination on him while he was on a Chinese territory.

Kim Jong-nam, half-brother of North Korean leader, 'was a CIA informant'

Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, was a CIA informant before he was assassinated in Malaysia in 2017, a report has claimed.

lured to the North by Pyongyang’s false promise of living in “paradise on Earth,”

Some level of personal responsibility also exists, does it not? If there were really such a place, everyone would be there and, surprise surprise, it actually sucks.

Internet didn't exist at that time and you couldn't google "the paradise on earth", and had to take the words of Japanese government at face value.

... ethnic Koreans and Japanese, moved to North Korea with thousands of others under a 1959-1984 program in which the North promised free health care, education, jobs and other benefits.

It is difficult to believe that continued as latte as 1984. If you didn't research communism at the library maybe you wouldn't know. Much easier find out first today.

ridiculous trial as the North Korean defense was not present. the judge just fabricates a story without fact-checking and bases the judgment on unproven facts.

North Korean government violated the rights of the plaintiffs by forcing them to live under miserable, harsh conditions

despite that #live in harsh conditions# is a very subjective feeling, under this judgment, many foreigners in Japan who suffer discrimination and abuses can claim 100 million yen.

she boarded a ship to North Korea in 1960 and was stuck there until she was able to flee back to Japan in 2003

WTF!!!, she could come back or flee to Japan anytime before if she would.

On 22 August 1910, Japan effectively annexed Korea with the Japan–Korea Treaty of 1910 signed by Ye Wanyong, Prime Minister of Korea, and Terauchi Masatake, who became the first Japanese Governor-General of Korea.

this judgment was just made to dirty North Korea. it is another Japanese joke where Japan was a war crime aggressor in North Korea who suffered because of the Japanese occupation.

WTF!!!, she could come back or flee to Japan anytime before if she would.

what does this even mean? She couldn't leave....unless you know something that isn't mentioned in the story about these people being able to choose to return to Japan?? While Imperial Japan certainly does have things to answer for concerning war time in Korea, these 2 issues are not mutually exclusive.....Japan doesn't need to "dirty" North Korea, the absolute basket case that is the country does a good job of dirtying itself.

North Koreans may well have suffered as a result of imperial Japan's occupation, but even more have suffered since the totalitarian regime of the Kim's.

the fact that she did not come back or flee to Japan anytime before can not be justified and proven. Therefore this allegation is groundless and just used as an excuse.

Japan doesn't need to "dirty" North Korea

Japan needs to find a scapegoat to justify its weapon missile purchase and increase the defense budget.

even this news article publication is not innocent at this time when Kishida expects to increase taxes for defense purchases in 2024.

The case now returns to the Tokyo District Court, where it will review the extent of damages the North Korean government must pay to the plaintiffs, their lawyers said.

Must? Got to be a problem in translation here. "Must"? Gets my vote for the joke of the week!

A Japanese high court on Monday said the North Korean government was responsible for the human rights abuses of plaintiffs

I'm pretty sure NK couldn't care any less what a Japanese court says or thinks.

Originally, five plaintiffs filed a lawsuit in 2018 with the Tokyo District Court seeking 100 million yen ($900,000) each in compensation for “illegal solicitation and detainment.”

IDK who is more insane a Kim family worshiper or one of those 5 plaintiff's who think they have a shot at getting one single yen from NK?

North Korea, however, has never responded to the lawsuit and likely will not pay damages.

Oh REALLY?!?! No one saw THAT result coming.................

Waste of time.

They were having a hard time and thought the grass would be greener on the other side. It wasn't so now its Japan's fault? Sorry about that but you made the choice... Live with it.

Not a very clever bunch, are they?

In the Pied Piper of Hamelin, were the children to blame? The parents? I just can't believe it took over 70 years to reach this conclusion. Did some paperwork get lost or something?

North Korean government was responsible

I am sure they were. So, are they still responsible?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I know a lot of you don’t know this but back in the day, North Korea was the good one, well economically anyway. Still can’t really blame these people for going. Heck it’s ironically how some of their families ended up in Japan.

Doubly ironic because this is how the migrant workers from Asia are treated today in Japan. Snake eating its tail in this part of the world

Good point, I'd like to add a top tip. If you visit Panmunjom and go to the visitor (South Korean propaganda center) don't ask why the chart tracking the GDP of North and South Korea starts in 1971. The South Korean army guides will get angry and ask you to leave.

Communism always promised an egalitarian classless paradise foretold by Marx. And it never has delivered it.

And what is Japan going to do about it? Nuke NK?
