The punishment drew public scrutiny, generating debate in Japan over what is considered to be excessive in disciplining children.

It also drew worldwide scrutiny!!

It seems that most Japanese don't take it much seriously as no one was hurt or dead. Many parents do such similar disciplines sometimes.

Any bets on their being a documentary about this in 10-15 years time where the boy revisits the scene and explains what he did for those 6 days?

I'm starting to get the feeling that "abandoned" is not quite right for this case.

Was just about to state the same gokai.

Soon he will be scheduled to throw out First Pitch for the Hokkaido Fighters. He's now a rare celebrity in the area.

Sure his parents went too far, but no way this kid was telling the truth when he said he ran after their car. Did he ever apologize for throwing rocks at cars btw? Another child who learns doing the wrong thing turns you into a celebrity...

The boy may be a celebrity but they will probably be frowned upon in their neighborhood for as long as they live in their current home. It may be best to start anew elsewhere.

No rocks, please.

The parents should foot the bill.

Look, he bowed, he said it was regrettable. That's it then

@sf2k... we shake hands in Australia and say "Sorry, mate" ... kind of the same thing, isn't it?

I'm just still shocked that the parents were telling the truth.

I preferred that his release be a quieter affair. We know he's safe, and he and his family just need to get on with their lives. The boy's been through enough without having cameras flashing in his face.

Why in the world didn't search parties check all structures in the area? Why did he have to be found by chance in a nearby building?

What kind of dad abandons their son near a forest with bears in it? He shouldn't get off scott free
