Milk it, Abe, milk it! yes he`ll milk it , milk it hard, for all its worth, even if it draws blood

Abe: "Don't worry everyone, we are spending billions of yen on the Olympics, which will cheer you up."

Just what those poor people needed another drip arriving on the door step

@wipeout

I ask because national leaders are often criticised if they don't put in an appearance at a disaster area. So they are generally expected to a) turn up and b) say something instead of remaining mute.

Abe has turned up, and said something. This seems like one of those rare times where even if you dislike Abe, there is no particular reason to criticise his actions

and you just answered your own question... Abé doesn't want his "ratings" to fall any further... His "concern" is just about as "deeply felt" and "true" as the "fabricated" apology he recently gave concerning the atrocities of WW2.

I see no problem with the prime minister visiting the flooded area. He is exercising good leadership, just as any leaders would in similar situations. Unfortunately, it sticks in the craw of the Abe-haters on JT. They can't bring themselves to say he did the right thing. If he didn't go, you would criticize him. If he does go, you criticize him. Some of you should learn to be objective.

“We’re doing our best to make things safe by reconstructing the broken (river) bank as quickly as possible to prevent a repeat of this disaster"...

"And when I say as quickly as possible, I mean after the Olympics stadium... and oh yeah, after that whole Tohoku and Fukushima thing, so relatively speaking quickly as possible."

Whatever opinion one has of Abe san personally, first and foremost Abe san is an elected head of government, any Japanese Prime Minister would be duty bound visiting a flood disaster spanning an area of 32 square kilometres

I wonder if a he able to hit the back 9 like he did in Hiroshima last year?

"Abe: "Don't worry everyone, we are spending billions of yen on the Olympics, which will cheer you up.""

I said something like this the other day, and that they should use that money for cleaning and reconstruction, and it was "off topic".

In any case, yes, he would be ridiculed if he did not show up, but that's the only reason he IS showing up. I don't really see him pledging anything that is not being done, or addressing the water that was 'flooded into the ocean' at the Fukushima plant. Nor did I see him when this was happening doing anything but trying to push through his security legislation, which no doubt he'll return to after the photo op is finished.

Exactly Brainiac. I think the same thing. People here will criticize Premier Shinzo Abe regardless of what he will do or not. JapanToday users are criticizing his visit to this place, but those users would criticize him for not visiting these cities and regions too.

I know a country where certain region were affected by flood and after this the president of this country ignored those victims.

The test now Abe has visited the disaster area, is for the ruling government to announce a clear decisive recovery plan. Presented in a manner detailing additional dedicated resources, underpinned by matching immediate relief funding directly to the community. Let's not revisit in 18 months time and witness residents still living in temporary accommodation.

The Japanese leader reviewed the extensive damage from a military helicopter and met with evacuees at a shelter.

Is he just 'going through the motions' like most leaders, or does he sincerely care? I sometimes criticize Abe in these forums, but today I won't.

Today was a nice sunny day. PM Abe could've played golf, relaxed, taken Akie out on the town (LoL). But no, he actually went to see those towns and it's people. Good for him.

WIPEOUT; You should realize that no matter what abe dues, there are always same comment writers such as Bertie who love to have chance to bash Abe .

Very unfortunate for all those living there. Hope Japanese govt will support these people by diverting somw of the unnecessary and obviously unpopular funds away from defence or Olympics to more tangible and humanitarian causes that the Japanese People really want

g'ad he met victims and he eyed by himself instead of reading or listening report or opinion of somebody else.

I just watched local news tdat mentioned Jpn and states about this story. For a while I did not know who visited there, So, I just got curiosity how you people pronounce Abe;s name. news lady said as if Lincoln's first name.

I am waiting to learn what he will do instead of speculating, not insulting victims with joking on their miserable situation that I consider worse than delayed action.
