They do this as they demand that the Japanese stop offending them by visiting Yasukuni.

Coo-koo.

China go home!

0 ( +19 / -19 )

time to put a weapons radar lock on the Chinese ships to rattle them a bit....otherwise their bullying will keep on increasing!!!

-10 ( +11 / -21 )

Neither the United States nor Japan want to see the Senkaku islands in the hands of China. That said, it would be very difficult for the Chinese to seize the islands and occupy them since the topography of the islands provides little to no cover.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

It's time for Japan reestablish settelment - occupation and call chinas bluff.

11 ( +19 / -8 )

At first I thought this was a foolhardy thing for Abe to do right now. Then I saw the part about the 8 Chinese ships. Does Japan need to "quarantine" the islands?

6 ( +9 / -3 )

Think it would be a better retirement home for right wing fossils and their friends in the black vans. Build a road around the island so they can drive their vans and disturb the peace.

16 ( +21 / -6 )

House Atreides

Not to mention that those islands were used as target practice for tactical bombing by the US Navy probably full of bombshells that had no detonated properly and now are de facto mines.

The US said the islands belong to Japan, China admitted to the UN they signed them away to Japan in 1890.

Move on China.

“It would be natural for us to expel by force the Chinese if they were to make a landing.”

Beautiful. Well said Mr Abe. Please know the entire civilized world agrees with you.

0 ( +8 / -8 )

US said the islands belong to Japan. Who are the US? Fix the problem within US first, don't oppress the rest of the world with US this and that. If both sides expel each other by force, there will be war. Think voters! Do we want our childeren blown up to pieces?

-2 ( +7 / -9 )

Thats a great idea!!!

I am glad that Abe stands by his guns. Any hesitation, and Japan will wake up one morning to find a Chinese presents on the islands claimed by China.

Vietnam, Brunei, and the Philippines alread had that experience.

What ever happened to a peaceful Asia. Are these politicians really of this planet. We've just had a week of North Korea exhaling nuclear attack rhetoric, the US has been saying don't worry Japan we'll take care of you, and now Abe using more violent rhetoric against the Chinese. But here is the question. The US has said it would defend against the North Koreans, did it say anything about the Chinese.?? Abe has more domestic problems right now, but then again politicians are good at creating diversions, just hides their bungling incompetence.

Typical of Japanese, when the ^*^$& hit the Fan, then call for the USA to help then!

no one here want a war between this two country, because i know most of the guys talking tough are the first one to get a plane back home.

i say blow the island with a nuke, like that no one get nothing.

-10 ( +3 / -13 )

Abe's probably as we speak in more backroom deals with the US so they can hide behind them after making threats.

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

Abe: "We VOW to expel you from the islands. Now, go ahead, US, and do it for us. Oh, and thanks. We promise to think about forming a panel to talk about the possibility of making a group that will research forming a panel to talk about making a group that considers joining various other initiatives by the US, or keeping our promises on the base issues, as a result."

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

For the Chinese government leaders: GO AHEAD, YOU MADE MY DAY!!

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

The island dispute wasnt the main focus of conflict! Instead it is like a snubing campaign with "I split on your grave" mania runs strong in the name of "patrioticism"!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Can you imagine if there is a collision lead to casualties when so many ships chasing in high speed and when they couldnt figure out who is who in the chasing?

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Any war there would be like fighting over the meaningless trenches in WWI. In case of full out war any troops from anywhere on that island will be soon dead. Theres no food, no water, no place for an airstrip. Please no more of this selfless "I wanna die", "for my country" selfishness. There are so many great things in life to stretch yourself to the max for and feel enthused about, besides war.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I don't have any opinion on whether the Senkakus/Diaoyus are Japan's or China's but I can understand both sides actions. Japan wants the status quo as they already control the islands and don't want to negotiate anything, why give the islands up? On the other China has been increasing its military budget every year for as long as anyone can remember. Their economy is growing at a 7-10% rate a year, they already have an aircraft carrier now and more are on the way. Sooner or later they will be so strong militarily that they can just take the islands by force, a greying Japan with 30% of the population over 65 is not going to offer much resistance. They'll keep provoking Japan until they send such a big armada that Japan will have no choice but to let them take it. I am really glad I am Canadian as every time I am asked about this by Japanese or Chinese people my answer is always "It's none of my business".

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Can't they (both!) just stop this and grow up, for pity's sake!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

WE LOVE YOU ABE!!

GO japan!! BANZAI!!!

Patriots are the backbone of any nation!! ALL HAIL THE PATRIOTS!!

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

Good! This is the way it should've been handled to begin with...and just to think - The Sake Flotilla left without me :(

0 ( +3 / -3 )

well, I think, for Japanese this is not about patriotism, this is purely island issue. Even the Chinese document stated the island belonged to Japan, until 70s when researchers found there was natural resource. For Japanese it's like China suddenly claiming Okinawa is theirs because it was once in ancient history. That is why unlike Takeshima/ dokdo, Japanese government stance is that there is no such dispute on this island. On the other hand I see patriotism from China, because every time something happens with the island they go out burning Japanese flags using terrible language and sometimes destroying Japanese-owned buildings and government doesn't do much about it.

At using violent rhetoric? Do you know who is sending ships into whose territory? To answer your question: Ask China why they need to be grabbing their smaller neighbors' territories.

But here is the question. The US has said it would defend against the North Koreans, did it say anything about the >Chinese.?? Abe has more domestic problems right now, but then again politicians are good at creating diversions, just >hides their bungling incompetence.

Yes they did. Both the US Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense have made statements, as well as Congress having passed a resolution stating that the US will defend the Senkakus from attack. Why do you think the Chinese are afraid of sending their naval ships and resort to using their para-military "Maritime Surveillance" ships?

If Abe is not careful he Will end up with a War on his Hands, that is of his doings. By taking these islands in the first place of private persons or companies.Should talk and have dialog with China. We do not want any more wars or conflicts . China is Not North Korea. and should be treated with respect. as you would like respect of Japan.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

what in the planet are those Chinese thinking !

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Well I think this is (only) an escalation to clarity. Of course this is what has lurked at the bottom of all the other earlier arguments. Suddenly it is time to be clear about it. The question is why now? Maybe its just the aftermath of the North Korean rhetorics? Maybe the Chinese government are starting to understand what kind of nationalistic ball they have put in to motion by their repeated intrusions and wants to speed the matter up by increasing the number of ships.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

When dealing with a bully it is a mistake to refrain from taking actions because it may provoke them into being more aggressive. Bullies will continue to be more aggressive because they consider restraint to be an indication of weakness. The only language they understand is the same one they speak. Japan needs to quickly build on these islands, be it a JCG or JMSDF outpost. That is the only thing that will cause China to back down.

If Abe is not careful he Will end up with a War on his Hands, that is of his doings.

No, it is entirely of China's doing. Do you know which country is sending ships into what country's territory?

By taking these islands in the first place of private persons or companies.Should talk and have dialog with China.

What difference did it make to China whether 3 of the islands were owned by Japanese citizens or the Japanese government? One of the islands has always been owned by the Japanese government but China never complained.

We do not want any more wars or >conflicts . China is Not North Korea. and should be treated with respect. as you >would like respect of Japan.

Yes nobody wants wars so China needs to cease it's territorial expansion program in the East and South China Seas. China is not North Korea but has and continues to protect it. That is why North Korea has developed into the threat that it is now. I agree China should be treated with respect, but only when China shows behavior that deserves respect.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Are there any diplomacy faculties in the asian universities?

If not it might be time to think about it!

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

It was good for Abe to clarify the situation. China now has no excuse for 'misunderstanding' the situation.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Abe has probably noticed that the Chinese have recently set up camp inside India and show no sign of leaving. It's the same story in the Philippine islands. Once the Chinese move in they never leave, unless forced out.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

The islands are surrounded by rich fishing grounds and are believed to harbor vast natural resources below the seabed.

Do your research, AFP. You think they car about fish? China's entire navy is bottled up in a narrow coastal strip and can't reach the Pacific Ocean without sailing through Japanese waters. Its possession of the Diaoyu islands would give it a handy jumping-off point, essential in encircling Taiwan (for example).

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

China just can't seem to get it right. Vietnam, Philippines, India, Tibet, Mongolia, Japan, etc...probably even NK when they get the chance. Who is the imperialist now?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Of course Abe have to make some noise. But since no Japanese nationalists land on the islands there is no reason to believe any Chinese nationalists want to organize a flotilla to make an attempt.

If in fact the Japanese nationalists land on the islands, Taiwanese nationalists may beat China to the punch and land there first! Remember Taiwanese had wanted to plant a Goddess statue on the islands but were turned back before. They are much nearer than boats from HK or mainland China.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

The islands are surrounded by rich fishing grounds and are believed to harbor vast natural resources below the seabed.

At this point both sides should understand that one isn't going to let the other just have it. They should cooperate to develop the fields together and split the proceeds and usher in a new age of Japanese-Chinese cooperation.

But that will never happen.

tmarieAPR. 23, 2013 - 10:16PM JST Yuri, who uses black vans are not Japanese. The Most are zainichi Korean. I'd like to see the stats to back that up please.

tmarie, they are so-called “ultra right-wing.” These “ultra right-wingers” typically uses black painted buses and vans equipped with loud speakers, playing Japanese national anthem, praising the Emperor, and giving hate speech. The truth of these organizations is now revealed that at least 30% of these right wingers are actually Koreans or of Korean descend. If fact, these right-wingers are usually very pro-Korea.

The behavior of these “ultra right-wingers” is malicious and is threatening to the general public. The goal of their behavior is to plant bad image of conservatism and to tarnish the image of national anthem and Japanese flag. This is one of the major reasons why Japanese today feel guilty about singing national anthem or showing Japanese flag. Some demonstrators even suspected that Fuji hired these “ultra right-wingers” to disrupt the demonstration and tarnish the image of demonstrators.

Actually smith, a great many military observers feel that Japan is quite capable of fending off a Chinese attempt to take the Senkakus by themselves. And why you seem to harp on this silly "hiding behind the US" nonsense when you would be the first to be complaining about "Japanese militarism" if they didn't is both childish and bewildering. The US-Japan Mutual Defense Treaty dictates that the US will defend Japan from attacks and the US Sec of State, Sec of Defense and Congress have made it clear that the Senkakus fall within this defense.

I am glad that Abe won't stand down,but i don't understand two things;

Why do the Chinese want territory that they, themselves, signed over over a century ago and, Why Americans see it right to abuse the Japanese for asking for help from a country that not only has territory in another country but also made sure said country couldn't have it's own army.

Surely you should accept that stopping Japan from having it's own army and placing strategic bases in that country (which you are allied with) means you are obligated to help.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

^ @ James Rankin

China always view themselves as a victim. And what they signed over century ago is an unequal treaties. That's why they don't accept Senkaku island as Japanese territory.

Again and Again China is being bullied. “A group of Japanese nationalists said it had sent nine ships to the area around the islands,” this counts as provoking. Naturally China would react to this provocation. Japan started all these problems and keeps pouring fuel into the fire. If you notice we have never seen any provoking actions or words coming China, but all are coming from Japan. Even S Korea also agrees with China. J villain is trying to act like a victim here and only the naïve would believe in it. Keep provoking China like this and one day it will say “enough is enough”.

FlowersApr. 24, 2013 - 03:31AM JST Again and Again China is being bullied. “A group of Japanese nationalists said it had sent nine ships to the area around the islands,” this counts as provoking. Naturally China would react to this provocation.

Why don't China confront the issue with the U.S. since U.S. created this. Why don't Chinese ships circle around U.S. bases around Okinawa and Guam with lock missles and see what happens. Japan has every right since U.S. gave adminstrative rights to Japan in Okinawa agreement, and they are following instructions.

China's claim on Senkaku/Diaoyu dates from the 1970s, when resources were found in the area. China successfully took control of the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea from the Philippines recently by sending military ships to the shoal. But this will not work against Japan since the Japan Coast Guard is much more capable and they have direct support from U.S. China's Navy is immature and its paramilitary ships have no actual combat experience. If it's in a isolated warfare around the islands, China will have much difficulty, and they know it. Its the China's military that had taken provocative action such as locking missile radar at Japanese ships. As such, the possibility exists of accidents and escalation.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

It's been over a hundred years that these islands were taken either knowingly or unknowingly by Japan. 100 years is a long time. These islands are Japan's now, as the Dokdo's are Korea's and the Kuril are Russia's. China needs to take a more balanced approach in its textbooks to stem its increasingly nationalistic people, Japan needs to come clean in theirs. Rising nationalism in both will lead to WW3.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

AlexNoaburg Apr. 24, 2013 - 03:59AM JST These islands are Japan's now, as the Dokdo's are Korea's and the Kuril are Russia's.

Huh? When Putin came to power, Putin sought to solve the dispute with Japan by negotiating on the basis of the 1956 declaration, which was to return two of the four islands to Japan. This was the first official recognition by the Russian side since that year that they might be willing to return some of the islands as part of a negotiated solution. However, the Japanese government rejected this proposal, insisting that it was only willing to negotiateby transfer of all four islands to Japanese control.

sfjp330, you must know that China doesn’t deal with a third party; that is why China doesn’t go the UN, ICJ, or the US. China only deals with the party involved. And, because the US is the third party, it has no rights to give administrative rights to Japan in the first place. I don’t believe that you consider radar locking in this case as a provocative action when Chinese ships were being closely trailed and China had denied the incident. Also, if Japan Coast Guard is much more capable, Abe wouldn’t be running around begging for supports. If China really wants to get into a war with Japan it would have done so already and not because of the fear of J naval capability or the US. China has kept its words in that its rise will be a peaceful one, and because of that Japan has been harassing and provoking China. Almost every week there would be some news coming from Japan to provoke China, and from this analysis we can conclude that Japan is in fact trying to defame China.

Great analysis flowers!

The most disgusting thing about Japanese politicians esp the LDP running Japan for so long is that they use the guise of democracy to smear China just because China is still officially a Communist system but everybody knows China is a hybrid system moving inexorably towards democracy but with Chinese own checks and balances instead of foolishly copying Western slugfest style. China see all the ills in America's free for all democracy and wow not to copy wholesale. Precisely because China takes her time to fix her problems, Japan and the West have a field's day endlessly demeaning China. But hey, China PRC is only about 60+ years and if one look around there is nothing that fantastic about democracy if not done right. I can go on and on, but India and US two biggest democracies, look at their histories as democratic systems and China say's no, we are not hurying ourselves to be full bore democratic and cause destabilization that could lead to the disintegration of the country. China is mindful of USSR leaving Russia losing all the satellite countries.

I actually hope the younger Japanese be less docile, feel less hopeless and speak out loudly their opinions. Looks like their lives have being hijacked by their older generations! I believe there are much more Japanese who want to co exist with China and willing to compromise but they are the silent majority. They should speak up!

That's right, everybody knows it's Koreans who are putting on these Nazi-style demonstrations and anti-Korean hate-fests, just to make Japan look like a nest of xenophobic, bullying bigots. The only bad people in Japan are ethnic Koreans (other than Chinese sneak thieves, Russian gangsters, Brazillian delinquents, Middle Eastern drug dealers and all other foreigners other than blond, blue-eyed White gods, that is).

Remember that 'Japanese' girl in the viral video calling for the mass murder of Koreans? She's obviously Korean -- she disguised herself as Japanese just to embarrass Japan. I don't need proof -- obviously no genuine Japanese would be so barbaric and vulgar, like a Korean.

Did you know Fukushima was sabotaged by Koreans in TEPCO?. Even the massacre of Koreans after the Kanto earthquake was perpetrated by other Koreans -- they'll stop at nothing if it will make the Japanese look bad. Nanjing Massacre? Only Koreans involved there, too. Unit 731's so-called doctors and their live human 'medical' experimants? Yup, all Koreans. Pearl Harbor? You guessed it. It was always the Koreans, and only Koreans. THE JAPANESE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ONLY VICTIMS.

Japan has deep concern about the trends in U.S.-China relations. Japan’s concern about U.S. interests in China in a way that is unfavorable to Japan and the continuance of the U.S.-Japan alliance. The U.S. is evaluating the growing disparity between Japan’s relative economic and absolute demographic decline and China’s growing economic, political, and diplomatic power, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. In other words, a U.S. probably wants to move toward China’s desire for a new power relationship in the region and most likely U.S. would take steps to gradually downgrade U.S.-Japan military alliance. The Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands crisis might seem tailor-made for U.S.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Neither the Japanese or the Chinese are going to let the other party officialy own the islands, and this whole conflict is not about those worthless pieces of rock themselves but more about that what can be found underneath the seafloor surrounding them.

In my opinion the best solution would be a cooperation, set up through the UN, of the Japanese and the Chinese. Something similar to the factory that the two Korea's used to run together. Let China and Japan set up projects and installations to extract the natural resources together, and split the output according to percentages agreed on. Maybe it would even be possible to make the Senkaku's/Diaoyu's some sort of neutral zone.

Ah well... who am I kidding, it would be nice, but both countries are to damn proud and cocky to accept such a solution. Then agian, I doubt that there are many countries that would not be...

Japan should have nothing to be worried about, once you're a friend of America you're ALWAYS a friend of America. Why else would we be getting Japan in our free trade talks and they'll probably join? They are our friends and we will help our friends in need. Americans hate the Chinese, they are snakes in the grass and aren't to be trusted. In other words, a U.S. probably wants to move >toward China’s desire for a new power relationship in the region and most likely U.S. would take steps to gradually >downgrade U.S.-Japan military alliance. The Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands crisis might seem tailor-made for U.S.

That's quite a fantasy and can only come from one who does not have a grasp of the United States, it's people, history and beliefs. How one can even come up with such a scenario when the US is in the midst of the pacific pivot with China already complaining is bewildering.

slowguy2Apr. 24, 2013 - 05:05AM JST Did you know Fukushima was sabotaged by Koreans in TEPCO?. Even the massacre of Koreans after the Kanto >earthquake was perpetrated by other Koreans -- they'll stop at nothing if it will make the Japanese look bad. Nanjing >Massacre? Only Koreans involved there, too. Unit 731's so-called doctors and their live human 'medical' experimants? >Yup, all Koreans. Pearl Harbor? You guessed it. It was always the Koreans, and only Koreans. THE JAPANESE >HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ONLY VICTIMS.

The above is all sarcasm of course. But that 240,000 Koreans served most of hem willingly in the Imperial Japanese armed forces and fought the allies, that they had use of the Comfort Women system at a discount rate no less, that Korean guards were famous for brutalizing allied POWS, that Koreans were tried and convicted as Class-B War Criminals, that Korea immediately played "victim" on Japan's defeat in WWII pretending to be on the same level as the Asian countries that Japan invaded, is all fact. Not sarcasm.

Geez dude, go learn some history before you make yourself look stupid with such an ignorant comment!

In the case of China, of course, the U.S. faces far less of a security threat than it did from the Soviet Union. Today, America dwarfs China militarily in both nuclear and conventional forces. We all know that security conflicts continue to create serious tensions between the U.S. and China.

However, today, China is the largest growth market in the world for U.S. goods and services. Trade with China, the third-largest U.S. export market and leading market for agricultural products has aided U.S. recovery from the financial crisis, and the future improve relations remain top priority for both countries.

Secretary of State John Kerry has emphasized the importance of U.S.-China cooperation by saying:

"The simple fact is that we need China, and China needs us. We have to get this relationship right. After all, we are talking about our connection to one-sixth of humanity. The most serious problems we face today, from nuclear proliferation to climate change, can't be solved alone. And, economically, our futures are deeply intertwined and will remain so. The tendency to demonize China, to consider it the next great threat, just isn't based in reality. There is incredible potential for cooperation, even as we have to deal with certain disagreements now."

If that pointless sole super power timid to attack North Korea when she always love to 'boast'! There is why she cant stop China a military far larger than NK! Both China and Japan find it hard to back down because they don't want to look weak in their respective constituencies. But somehow they must find a face saving strategy to come out of the stalemate, if they don't want to destroy their economies.

Compared to the seagulls, the Japanese citizens are second class! The birds can come and go and poop as they wish! Just be generous, petition the J Govt to give just ONE ROCK to Ishihara!

Very well said! I agree your incredible logic. What 's the point Japan is claiming as ownership if they can not come and go and rest like seagull?

Seagull do not require permission or Visa for landing on Senkaku. They are real owners of Senkaku or Dioayu.

@Athletes: They are real owners of Senkaku or Dioayu.

Can you show me a photo or bring up a living person who has been living on that 'Senkaku islands", there is no way for anyone can find drinking water to live!

Abe is a hero. The Senkakus are the Munich of our generation. China needs to be slapped down now, and Abe is the man to do it. Chamberlain let Hitler have his little victories, so that he could avoid war. Cowardice never works. Abe is your Churchill. He will see you through this. Otherwise, if the Senkakus fall, we will have World War III and Chinese dominion over the world.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

There are only two routs which the Japanese can go for the Senkakus Islands, firstly, the Japanese gives up and leaves islands grievously, let the chino dog gets it. or, secondly, the Japanese should beef up its military muscles quick; I remark, QUICK, and ready for the fight with Chinese dog to protect the territory.

@Tigerin the Hermitage:US said the islands belong to Japan. Who are the US? Fix the problem within US first, don't oppress the rest of the world with US this and that. If both sides expel each other by force, there will be war. Think voters! Do we want our childeren blown up to pieces?

You need to stop being a Wuss and grow a pair. It's called protecting what is yours by law. Or should we just let anyone take what belongs to us without a fight???

**tmarie, they are so-called “ultra right-wing.” These “ultra right-wingers” typically uses black painted buses and vans equipped with loud speakers, playing Japanese national anthem, praising the Emperor, and giving hate speech.

Some demonstrators even suspected that Fuji hired these “ultra right-wingers” to disrupt the demonstration and tarnish the image of demonstrators.**

Still waiting for the stats you posted... Thanks!

Now the whole world saw Japan's administraion of the islands was a myth! Eight Chinese maritime survellience services vessel patrolling in the district and Japan cant do anything to avoid repeat and repeat Chinese presents over there!

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

issa1 not the islands but the EEZ around them. China has a lot more territory that is close compared to Japan. So the islands would only have a 12 mile territory zone around them. The Chinese can then develop the gas fields around them, perhaps jointly with Japan. They want the resources and not the actual islands. As to the black vans, the ones I knew were Japanese. They play patriotic music too loud for the systems and drink beer in the back. Mostly harmless but are annoying.
