The title could equally be: "About 60% of teens say school sex education is useful: survey"

This for me would be more surprising news, that the majority are satisfied. Students must be quite docile, or the quality of information and teaching must be good.

Still, only 800 young people is a very small base.

Hmmmmm....  Like they need school for this.  Just go to your nearest conbini or manga store and it is all there in graphic detail.

The guys joking about sex with high school girls are the best kind of people!

I had sex-ed sometime in the '80s and even in that quaint pre-internet age it was totally useless. Kids know what's up. Whether they had access to or the courage to procure contraceptives were another matter. That terrifying 1st purchase of condoms haunted me for a long time.

Of the total respondents, 66.7 percent had experience of masturbation

Hmmm... and these were students aged 17-19? I think there might have been some under-reporting in this area.

Sex education isn't for those who already know, presumably the 40% who thought it was useless. It's for the 60% who are still unsure about some things and get useful information from the classes. The internet is hardly a good source. Either it's some god-awful porn site which distorts male female relations or it's social media with the usual bullshitters and nutters who think they know, but have got it all wrong. If you don't know, it's hard to judge what's reliable or not.

"66.7 percent had experience of masturbation"

Hmmmm - is anyone buying that figure? Cuz if these youngsters got to 19 without a sneaky five-knuckle shuffle, it's no wonder stress is killing so many of the locals.

Of the total respondents, 66.7 percent had experience of masturbation,

The report of the question clearly missed out 'that morning' - only that is plausible.

with 74.8 percent of them using smartphones to access explicit content and 8.8 percent simply fantasizing.

And what about the remaining 16%? Magna?

lol drastic under reporting.

sneaky five-knuckle shuffle

lol awesome. Never heard that term before.

When I was at school a lot of people skipped sex ed. It was taught in the driest manner possible.

Nearly 90 percent feel that contraception is necessary, according to the Nippon Foundation.

And about 10% thought it was okay to have an unwanted pregancy when still a teen, then get married, have the child and then get divorced.

It's hilarious that always news about anything related to sex draws most attention from the commentators here.

I would like the Japanese kids to have a good sex education from a different country like Belgium. a TV program called channel 4 made some years ago a program with a lady from Belgium and it just exposed how bad UK sex education is/was once the j children have had a different teacher, I would like to ask them there thoughts again and I am sure that statistics will drop. https://youtu.be/9agqpEwaE8I

I bet they considered it useless because they already learned “that” education part reading ero manga in spare time when they were preteens.

Its interesting that with all of so-called sex education in many countries these days there are so many under-age girls getting pregnant. Seems to be counter-productive.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

Useless because there is no discussion about love (Alain de Botton wrote a great philosophical book on the topic using his own experience), no discussion of how to talk to the opposite sex, what to do on a date, how to actually make love (a little porno is necessary here) and how other people in other countries go about dating. My first date was 13, with my father encouraging me. That helped!

What would be shocking is to learn that Teens are having sex!

with people so devoted to their smart devices where would they even find the time!

some people don’t even talk on their phones , they simply text!

A mild variation on the old lie that sex education builds an interest in sex.

Would you care to add some facts to your claim? How many is "so many"? What is the rate of under-age pregnancy in countries with sex education? I don't expect a meaningful response to be honest.

It is "so-called" sex education because it is sex education.

Sounds like romance and courtship training is lacking, all the jokes have been about masturbation.

Many things in school are useless.

no. Pretty accurate. Almost 100% of boys and a third of the girls.

Makes sense.

The lack of use of protection and contraception is scary in Japan. But that’s not just youth. It’s the adults .

The funny thing is that most of these students have probably had more sex than their virgin teacher.

If such reproduction education was needed, then 5,000 years ago, before schools and taking the bus, Humanity would have died out. Change the title to something indicates some degree of morality is attached by a society to reproductive activity.

A lot of things are useless but taught, a lot of things are useful but not taught, that is all an useless govt about.

I had sex-ed in high school in the mid-70's, which was called, Personal Development back then. It was interesting, but did very little to prevent STDs and unwanted pregnancies. We live in promiscuous times and teenagers are gonna explore their sexuality with or without education. However, I'm sure the little education they get is better than no education at all.

We all live in a Digital age, there’s nothing, absolutely nothing that’s not available via the internet media. The younger generations of today have access to everything as I do mean everything. Educational institution are not able to compete with the massive information available. This type Survey is useless in today’s world. Looks good on paper only!

I think you have a slightly naive understanding of young women if you really think that young women do not engage in this activity in great numbers.

How about call it Pregnancy Prevention Education (PPE) ?

@bill wright, the internet has been a revolution just in my time, how to fix car problems, what is your holiday destination like, top tips on how not to get ripped off, silly people doing silly thing, but what adult videos shall we say, portray woman in a bad light, it does not demonstrate that love between two loving people is a fantastic thing, what is portrade is woman that must be be bullied or dehumanised, they come across as sex objects, and in my previous comment there is a link to a channel 4 TV program and in the program the teacher gets the boys to write a short story, the girls were horrified and told the lads that is how they don't want to be portrade, or looked upon, eventually the lads saw the light and have changed, going back to my point is that not every thing can be obtained from the internet, you can't teach respect and love in the true meaning. Holland has one of the lowest teenage pregnancies in the world so they must be doing something right!
