I can't begin to believe that ANY Japanese organisation would fudge data and be less than honest.

Im sure it must be a first.

Mystifyingly fuzzy article, but what it wants to say and has managed to avoid spelling out is that the Kyoto/Osaka University team may have used data from another team's findings. The associate professor mentioned in the article would seem to be admitting it. The raw figures are very similar it seems; an anonymous caller has been questioning whether their findings were really their own. This means that the Monkasho Education Ministry must now ask whether a government research grant has been properly used, a potentially serious problem for some.

大阪大学や京都大学などの研究チームが、去年4月16日の熊本地震について観測したデータ。文科省などによると、研究チームは益城町で局地的に激しい揺れを観測したと発表していたが、この揺れのデータが別の研究機関が観測したデータと酷似していたという。この論文に関わった京都大学の准教授は、自身のホームページで「分析が不十分だった。大変申し訳ない」などと謝罪している。文科省は大阪大学などに事実関係の確認や研究費の使い方などについて調査を行うよう求めている
