ANA security checkpoint cut-off time becomes 20 minutes before departure at Haneda for domestic flights

All Nippon Airways (ANA) on Sunday introduced a new system in which domestic passengers at Haneda Terminal 2 need to pass through the security checkpoint at least 20 minutes before departure time, after having checked in online and checking necessary baggage.

ANA, which announced the new policy back in August, said its purpose is to ensure its passengers pass through security and arrive at their boarding gates with ease and on time for boarding, Fuji TV reported.

Over the last 12 years, the aviation industry has changed drastically and Haneda Airport has experienced expansions of its terminals and an increase in the number of flights. The rate of on-time departures has been impacted due to expansion and longer walking ways for passengers to get to their flights. Therefore, ANA said it decided to adjust the security cut-off time by five minutes, moving from the previously required 15 minutes to the new 20 minutes.

The airline reported no problems with passengers missing their flights on Sunday.

I think the one thing that gets under my skin the most about flying on any airline is that they literally, to me anyway, have you by the cojones when it comes to rules and regulations, like you have to give up your freedom, for the sake of "safety" to fly anywhere!

This is not so much about security as the main concern is that the plane can take off on schedule.

15 minutes was insanely short. I dont know of any other airport in the world that lets you check in 15 minutes before departure (feel free to correct me though, i didnt look it up). Most other airports/airlines will require you to be checked in at least an hour before the departure time.

Well said @afanofjapan. Anybody who has complaints about this clearly never travels anywhere else in the world. Where else can you leave the office at 5:20pm, be at the airport by taxi in 20 minutes and be sat down having dinner 550km away at 7:30pm..quite literally. Tokyo/Osaka as example.

@afan. Taking a domestic flight is just like taking a train or boat. Just because other countries have wars that produce terror attacks, their behavior has nothing to do with japanese domestic travel.

I was also very surprised when I first travelled on a domestic flight in Japan and realized how quick the plane departs after the door closes. I wish international flights were that quick. So annoying when certain passengers board the plane way after the scheduled departure time.
