April car accident victim likely devoured by bear

Yikes, I've been mountain biking in and around Hinohara. I hope the man had already passed away by the time the bear got to him. RIP.

i know they will maul anyone who invades their territory and the eat fish and berries but human flesh?

Its not common, but definitely happens, especially if the human is already dead. A few years back there was a man-eating bear in Akita that killed and ate four people collecting bamboo shoots.

Japanese black bear eat flesh as any other bear.

Bet he wished for a firearm when the bear showed up.

Bears are omnivores. They eat whatever is available.

I've had multiple close (10 ft) encounters in nature with black and brown bears. Being strapped into a vehicle (even if locked with windows up) isn't exactly safe from the larger bears.

I hope this man was already dead. There wasn't much he could do in a confined space without a firearm.
