Anyways, Japan should forget about Iran oil forever and buy oil (& natural gas) from Canada. Geez, it may be too late to buy big oil shipments from Canada as Canada has already made big oil deals with China and the US. Japan always loses out to slow decision-making.

In 1996, the U.S. agreed to pay $131 million for the shooting down of an Iranian civilian airliner flying over Iranian airspace. About $62 million was in compensation for victims. (The rest perhaps for the plane itself.) So how was the $2.65 billion for the deaths of 241 U.S. troops assessed?

The shooting down of the airliner incident you are referring to was an ACCIDENT, The Truck bombings WERE NOT an ACCIDENT...

And it looks like Iran got some money... How much money did Korea receive from that KAL 007 that was shot down by the Soviets..?

(albeit 2.65 billion is a bit much, even taken into account inflation)

Money oils the wheels and oil is money. So everything from the oil in the tyeres to the tank keeps on moving because if it stops some will see that the money isn't real anyway.

Chinasailor, the shooting down of a domestic aircraft flying within that nation's airspace by ANOTHER nation's (hostile nation, at that) can not be defined as an accident. It's a breach of sovereign territory, considered an act of war because the action was conducted directly by a government agency(military, in this case). It WAS an error, a very big series of errors, but not an accident.

Indeed, the truck bombings were not accidents, but criminal acts, and they were conducted by radical jihadists, not government representatives. Can you see the difference? Both BAD, but different.

One day the Japanee will make amends with China and perhaps the Chinese will sell oil from the soon to be wells on Senkaku islands. Japan could give the Ryukyuans independence and we already know the Okinawans get along well with the Chinese. The promise of oil could lubricate the wheels of progress..............

Wow. That is a lot of interest. Someone made some bank.

Albaleo, very good point. I suppose by the numbers of the deaths/dollars, the US courts do value US lives much more highly than value of others. Pretty sure the passengers who were killed when their plane was shot down (by accident is irrelevant ) were quite terrified.
