Bear literally gets its butt kicked by Japanese man after sneaking into his house

On the afternoon of June 21, Hisao Ueno was at his home in the hills of Otsuchi, a rural town on the coast of Iwate Prefecture. At around 1:50 in the afternoon the 47-year-old Ueno, who shares the home with his mother and their cat, heard their pet screeching loudly from a room on the first floor.

Wondering what the commotion was, Otsuchi went to check on the cat, which was in the room with the family’s butsudan, or Buddhist altar. When he got there, he saw that there was another animal in the room as well: a bear.

The bear, however, apparently hadn’t noticed Ueno yet. Instead, its attention was focused on the altar. In addition to photos of deceased relatives and holders for burning incense, butsudan also have space for leaving offerings of food for ancestors. Fruit is a common offering, and on that day the Ueno family had set out some bananas, and the bear was giving them a sniff, seemingly attracted by their aroma. This also meant that the bear’s backside was exposed, and Ueno, worried for the safety of his car and mother, decided to capitalize on this by kicking the bear in the butt over and over.

▼ Ueno recounts the butt-kicking incident,

“I thought ‘I have to protect [them],’” Ueno says. “I never imagined a bear would come into my house. For the sake of my mom and cat, all I could do was kick.”

After repeated blows to its backside, the bear decided it didn’t want the bananas that badly. Crashing through a window, the animal (which is estimated to have been about 90 centimeters in length) fled the scene, scampering off into the surrounding woodlands.

Not being ourselves experts in the areas of bears, kicking, or bear kicking, we’re not sure whether or not going on the offensive is the safest idea if a bear wanders into your house, though Ueno suffered no injuries in the encounter. One thing we would recommend, though, for those living in rural areas, is to be careful about how long fruit is left on the butsudan. Looking at the video, some of those bananas were pretty ripe, and with the heat and humidity of a Japanese summer, odds are they were especially pungent. As we learned a few years ago when bears were destroying Shinto shrines and graves because of their sweet aromas, bears have a surprisingly advanced sense of smell, so rotating home altar offerings before they develop a bouquet is probably a smart idea.

Kicked the bear in the derriere O_O Seriously folks the guy was lucky said bear didn't take a swipe at him with one of those big paws with those big claws. Depending on the size of the bear one swipe can kill someone. Bears are not to be messed with.

safety of his car and mother

perhaps

safety of his cat and mother

is more correct?

Attacking a bear can be a very bad idea, but depends on the size of the bear.

I've had multiple close encounters in the wild with different types of bears from small black bears who were more afraid of me than anything all the way up to huge male Kodiak brown bears (~700kg) less than 4m away, but mostly fully grown adult brown bears who aren't afraid of humans in the least. They know who's in charge between a single man and a single bear. Two big people and the bear will think twice, unless there are cubs.

Bears are driven by their noses and stomachs more than any dog. If we can smell something, they definitely can smell it from 100m away.

It was a small bear. I do not think the guy would dare to kick a fully grown bear's butt.

I guess he couldn't bear with the reality of his family getting hurt. Kidding aside, that was some quick thinking and a healthy amount of courage. I guess Yogi bear doesn't have picnic baskets to snatch anymore.

My crazy mom back in Canada would go out with a wooden broom and wack the cr.p out of black bears trying to get into the garbage locker on the veranda.

Always thought she was nuts.

No bear ever stood up to her they ran everytime.

Raccoons, that was different those things would fight back.

So he beat up a little hungry curious bear and thinks he's a hero ?

Pick-in-nick baskets! Yeaaaahhhh-yeaaaa-aaaaa-aaaayyyyy!!!!!

This story sort of resembles those old Hannah-Barbara cartoons where they say, 'Get out (KICK) and stay out!'.

.... and then the oji-san phoned the teevee company, said "I just kicked a bear"..... ?

At least he didn't phone the local hunters' association to come and turn the poor bear into a stew.

I imagine he phoned his insurance company to get them to pay for the replacement window, and they were the ones who contacted the camera crew?

The bear was less than a meter long? Not sure how much of a threat it was.

Reminds me of the time a grizzly bear woke me up by dragging me on the ground by my feet. After escaping and running into the car, the bear came and rocked the car by putting its front paws on the roof. That bear was definitely taller than 90 centimeters.

The only one so far, in the article or comments, to call him a hero, is you.

Do you really think the bear was just going to help himself to a few bananas and them walk out the front door? It's likely, although not indicated in the article, that the bear broke something getting into the house anyway.

Kudos to this guy for 1. Taking action immediately, and 2. Not getting hurt in the process.

Although, since shoes are not worn in Japanese houses, I wonder if launching your barefoot at the bony backside of a bear was a great idea. No broomsticks, canes or other hard objects at hand?

So he violently attacked a bear that was just doing what bears do, looking for food, and now he has a broken window? I just had a broken window repaired recently, it took the company two weeks to repair and cost me ¥120,000. How much does a banana cost?
