This year’s winners of the Best Mother Awards have been named. The annual awards was started 10 years ago by the NPO Nihon Mothers Association, which initiates various activities and events across the nation to support moms.

The awards are for mothers considered inspiring in terms of lifestyle and way of thinking.

Winners are voted on through the Internet, mobile phones, surveys and events such as Mother Festa.

This year’s winners are model Mayumi Sada, 39 (cultural category), former figure skater Shizuka Arakawa, 35, (sports category), Yoshino Kimura, 41, (acting category), Maki Goto, 31, (singing category) and consultant Marie Kondo, 31, (business category), who has written best-selling books on decluttering and tidying up rooms.

Didn't know she was a mom. Hope her child is the messiest kid on earth.

Of all the things I could think of writing a book on, decluttering and tidying up rooms is very close to the bottom of the list.

It seems all these women have serious careers that would mean their kids probable spend a fair bit of time at daycare, club and cram school.

Re: the last post, kids who go to daycare do not go to cram school. They won't go to "clubs" either, because clubs start at school, mostly JHS, not elementary school. Preschoolers may go to "narai-goto", dance classes, English, piano, sports etc., but only if their parents (mothers) physically accompany them there. People who work all day leave their kids for extended daycare (encho).

As for the general cult of celebrity, urghh! Get on with your own life and do not project things onto other people or concern yourself with whatever idolized image of themselves they may present, either as a celeb through the media or an ordinary person through social media.

And all of them probably have private nannies caring for their kids while they are working... yer great parenting. The best mother award should have an extra category: mothers who live in the real word category.

Is this a best mother award, or a best "famous" mother award? What a farce...

I'm sure the recipients of this award are all wonderful and worthy people but it would be nice, as has been pointed out, if ordinary moms were recognised. Young, old, single or married.

None of these awards are for your average person, only famous, rich, etc are considered.

@Kohaku I was not suggesting that 4 year olds go to cram school. I meant that children come in various ages, and rich busy people adjust to their career and mothering. Also why no good fathering award?

what nonsense my mommy is the best happy mothers day to her and all the other mothers in the whole world

To me the "Mother of the Year" award goes to all the mother's out there who "DO IT" day after day, year after year, and get no recognition for their dedication other than the love of their children, hopefully! Not some celebrity or athlete.
