I have been told by a Spanish friend that Murakami's books in the language are quite enjoyable, much more than in English, and that was rare for him because translations to his mother tongue tend to feel forced to him.

If this is true this can explain why he is so popular in Spanish speaking countries and would help understanding this recognition.
