Bodies of 4 babies found in Tokyo apartment

The decomposed bodies of four babies were found in plastic bags Sunday in the Tokyo apartment of a woman who committed suicide last week, police said Monday. Several years are believed to have passed since the babies died because most of the bodies were skeletonized.

The 51-year-old woman, who began living alone in the second-floor apartment in Tokyo's Ota Ward more than 10 years ago, was found hanging Friday in a park in the same ward, police said.

She left a note saying, ''I have suffered from money issues. I can't pay rent any more.''

The younger sister of the woman and her husband found four plastic garbage bags in the apartment Sunday while organizing the woman's belongings, police said. When they opened one of the bags, there was a foul smell, and they contacted the police.

The four bodies were swathed separately in layers of plastic bags, police said. Autopsies will be conducted to determine whether the babies were the woman's.

LAST WEEK? Doesn't appear the police paid much attention to what was going on in her apartment either, let alone the neighbors.......

Icky - who could have lived in that place with four dead babies for so many years?! Wouldn't you like to peer into that skeletonized mind for just a few moments - but wouldn't want to be trapped in there.

Funny, after reading articles such as this on Japantoday for the last two years, horror films don't seem to phase me anymore!

Yeah, I think the problem with all the suicides & crazy crimes is from the crushing pressure of having to be/act a certain way to be accepted by japanese society. Along with these pressures comes very serious depression and anger issues.

Normally, if a person is feeling some sort of despair or suicidal thoughts, they usually get counseling or take therapy. Japanese society actually looks down on this. They believes that if you can not handle your own problems (i.e. if you recieve counseling), then you are a weak person. So ppl who need counseling dont ask for the help, hense breaking down and committing suicide or lashing out on other ppl (i.e. Japan's recently rich criminal association)..

But these stories shouldnt deter anyone from visiting this amazing place.. Its thick culture is something amazing to experience.

maybe she had a denial pregnancy syndrome ?

maybe the bank robber had "denial starve to death syndrome" and hit the bank as a consequence. Why do women get all the nice excuses for disgusting crimes?

This is truly the grossest news story in Japan Today. Remember this the next time foreign crime in Japan is brought up. The home grown crimes beat everything.

Poor babies.

maybe she had a denial pregnancy syndrome ? i've show something like that on TV. Women just refuse to admit they are pregnant and when the baby comes out it is just trash for them.

She's dead - justice served.

It would be a mistake to view this as indicative of something wrong in Japanese society - there have been similar incidents in Germany and Wales as well to my knowledge. It's not right, but it's not peculiarly Japanese.

BBBRRRRRRR!!! Creepy!

The woman could easily get herself pregnant

Technically I believe females need a sperm donor in order to get pregnant; they can't actually do it by themselves.

But four times and nobody noticed? I suppose she wasn't that close to her family and she could always tell the neighbors she's letting her mother/sister/cousin raise the children. I wish her comfort in whatever world she is; she obviously couldn't cope with this world.

this is very disturbing and so common in Japan, what is going on here? seems every other news is about mutilated bodies and suicides. these are some major issues that need to be addressed.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Messed up... social pressure in Japan is something the J Government needs to address. There shouldn't be all this keeping up with everyone attitude in Japan.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Whether she is criminally liable is now moot, because we'll never know if full understood right and wrong. What is undeniable is that she was crazy, and her family, friends and neighbors had no way to deal with, nor did her government have a safety net that would have protected those babies in the bags.

Why should there be ANY stigma on psychiatry?

Every day, we seem to read these horrendous stories about life in the "real" Japan. They tell us that Japanese society is crumbling at its foundations. What a sad story this is. Because of the Japanese sense of "shame" this poor woman didnt want to cause "meiwaku" or trouble, to her family, friends and neighbours . . .I presume. The result is sad and horrifying reading. Really tragic story of life in modern 21st century Japan - a country that has lost its way, and is starting to founder.

My money is on bamboo hat's theory.

‘‘I have suffered from money issues. I can’t pay rent any more.’’

you suffered from more than money issues.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

this is so far down psychotic sick I nearly dry heaved. I recall a few of these sorts in the news here over the years.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Bamboo hat Too many agains. The woman could easily get herself pregnant and deliver the babies at home. Why would transient neighbors (as many apartment dwellers are) bother with the next door neighbor, mine never do. Sad case of a woman not coping with life, hope she gets some solace in the end.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Creepy case.

And I suppose the neibhors who saw her get pregnant time and time again never thought to wonder why they never heard any crying.....

Or where the smell was coming from......

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Wow, so this lady, for whatever reason, got pregnant. No aboriton. carried the baby to term. then killed it or let it die. Then got pregnant again, and again, and again, and again. And kept the bodies. So when she got pregnant with the fourth kid, she already had three dead babies in the apartment.

Then she later kills herself becasue of "money issues."

I suppose concieving, having and killing baby after baby is no big deal, so long as you can pay the rent.

Great plot for a new genre of horror film.

Abductions + mental illness sounds like a likely story. You couldn't have several babies without someone noticing, surely.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Grisley.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Guessing that the babies were not killed at the same time if they were her's. But then if they were her's why didn't anyone know anything about her having kids. Didn't sound like anyone was worried about missing children.

If not hers, then maybe some abductions are about to be sadly resolved.

As for mental illness and suicide. Japan has a long heritage of suicide as a means of penance, redemption etc... combine that with the stigma of mental illness and this is a problem that will be epic in scale if current conditions continue.

What's sad is that this story is sickening, yet not really surprising given the things that are happening in this country at the moment.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Beyond horrible.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If they were all the woman's children, they can't all have been babies unless they were triplets or quadruplets.

The bodies were decomposed. The babies weren't necessarily all killed at the same time.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well, based on the story, she must have killed the babies because she had money problems and couldn't survive...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This is one of those stories that leave too many questions unanswered. Who were the babies? If they were all the woman's children, they can't all have been babies unless they were triplets or quadruplets. The oldest one must have been at least six. Who and where is the father?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

seesaw - tell me again why she killed her babies?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Honestly, this is not the sort of news I look forward to, after a lovely weekend. The woman is only 51 years old. There're still many part-time jobs available if she's willing to do anything to support herself. (My office had so much troubles looking for J women to do cleaning work & stuff and had to resort to 'import' workers. It seems to me that this woman didn't make enough effort for her own survival, that's why she even killed her babies and herself. It's really a sad way of life. The babies deserved to live...RIP.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What a weird case. How come the woman's sister, friends or neighbors never inquired of the woman how her children are?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And they (The sister and her husband) couldn't work out that something was a little strange with her over all these years? Even with mental illness in this country families ignore that the person is ill and treat everything as normal. That's mainly because the society frowns upon it and even if the person is a little odd it is covered up. Saw a similar incident several years ago. Things are going to get tougher under the current economic strain and people cracking from not being able to pay rent or think that there is no help available will invariably end up the same way.

Imagine the smell! Maybe it was guilt that finally got to her?
