Bodies of elderly couple found in Tokyo apartment

The bodies of an 81-year-old man and his 74-year-old wife were found in their apartment in Tokyo’s Ota Ward on Sunday. Police said it appeared they had been dead for at least a week.

According to police, the bodies of Susumu Yoshida and his wife Toshiko were found by their daughter at around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sankei Shimbun reported. The daughter told police she was worried because she hadn’t heard from her parents in a week.

Police said Yoshida was found lying on his stomach in the toilet, while his wife was found lying on her side on a futon in a bedroom. Neither body had any signs of external injury and both were clad in their pajamas.

Police said it appears the two died of natural causes but said autopsies will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Newspapers for the past 10 days were piled up outside the front door to the apartment which was locked.

This is a definite warning sign there is trouble for an elderly couple. It’s a shame they live in a country of 126 million strangers.

I read about an initiative from the UK a few years ago. They connect a red light on the outside of the house to the toilet. If the toilet is not flushed at least every 24 hours the light starts flashing. A very simple and effective safety measure for the elderly.

What does that mean? How could 2 people die simultaneously of natural causes? And when there’s going to be autopsies anyway, why speak too soon?

I find your comment a bit disrespectful.....

There were zero comments, 3 questions and nothing disrespectful. You’re taking a line of thinking way off from what is clearly put in my post. In any case, again there was no disrespect meant !!!!!!

puregaijin; I believe you are way off base with your comment. First, according to the article the police said "it appears the two died of natural causes". Looking at their ages, it could be possible. Or perhaps one died of natural causes and the other wasn't getting his/her medication due to one of them dying. We can speculate all day however I find your comment a bit disrespectful given the amount of info given.
