Well Japanese have generations of social distancing so not too worried about this.

I still don;t understand why you would need to go to a travel agent for domestic tourism. What does the travel agent offer apart from clipping the ticket on the way through?

Have a mask (sales person) to show where your paying to go, probably not a good idea. Definatly dubious advice. Too soon.

Never mind, it will be go to eat next month, then some other virus spreading ‘Go to...!’ will come along....

Has anyone here succeeded in booking a hotel and transportation package with their own (non-japanese) name?

I tried first on Nippon Travel (www.nta.co.jp), and on the last step they ask for your credit card holder name in Kana!!! As well as your birthday registered with the card... I tried 3 different cards issued in Japan that I use daily and none worked. Switched to my J-wife's card (family card of my card) and it worked right away.

Then I decided to cancel that reservation and book with JTB. You have to register to get the GOTO discount, and they even let you register a middle name, making it appear foreigner-friendly. But alas, no matter what card I used I got a "system error" and had to enter everything all over again. As a last resort, I changed my JTB account info to my wife's name, and it worked on the first try!

Some things seriously never change.

You don't have to physically go, unless you can't get around the name problem I wrote about above.

But you can't get a discount on the transportation part of your trip unless you get it as a package from a travel agency. (Although JR east might have a separate campaign, it doesn't work nationwide). This makes sense as we don't want salarymen using up GOTO discount money for their everyday commute.

therougou:

There are some sites where they don't accept names with a dash (to represent a long vowel). Stupid.

Two months ago the People who said Japan would collapse because of Covid 19 are right here making comments today.

Same people have said the government has completely failed and Japan will see as many deaths as America if not more because of the density of our city, because Japan has the oldest population on earth with many in their 80s,90s even 100.

Never happened, never will, Japanese people are very different from Americans.

kurisupisu,

it will be go to eat next month

Next month, where I live, will be Go to イート. Which took me a minute to figure out. Fortunately, it’s not JTB or Dentsu we have to go to but the Post office. Amazingly efficient. Must use the tickets by March 31. No statement from the Gov on whether it can be used just for alcohol or not.

We were told school openings would bring disaster, ending the s.o.e would bring disaster, 5000 at events would bring disaster go-to would bring disaster.

Think how much worse of we would all be if we had listened to the doomsdayers.

Yep, you were right. JTB responded with a list of characters that aren't allowed for the katakana, and sure enough the dash is in there. Of course it should have stopped me from registering with said kana to begin with...

https://www.jtb.co.jp/kokunai/pkg/contents/guide/inputrule_katakana.asp

Ironically I don't even need the dash in my name, but someone at the city hall told me to put it in when I first came to Japan and I've been stuck with it ever since. Same thing with how Mitsui Sumitomo Bank made me put my middle name in, and now I get an error every time the system tries to match names. So frustrating!

I know. I wonder why those guys are not embarrassed with themselves.

So did I.

I have kids in school but never heard about any cases. But I can't blame the media for ignoring if some school closed down for 1 or 2 covid cases. Schools shut down regularly for the flue. If there was a large cluster I'd expect some media coverage though. And what does being Japanese have to do with it?
