The Brazilian fee was levied in retaliation for exclusion of Brazil from the U.S. visa waiver program.

Pride got in the way and they were only hurting themselves in the end. At least they came to their senses, after losing millions to competing nations welcoming tourists without imposing such expenses and hassle.

Truth is, former Presidents Lula and Dilma treated Europe and US with despise as much as they could. The old "imperialist nation blah-blah-blah". Lula once even said that "US has a lot to learn from us (the "us" in the case being his administration, mind you). The Visa fee thing is one of the sides of their leftist administration. Thanks godness President Temer is open to the world and we everybody is in a win-win situation if the waiver program becomes permanent.

Wow, so I can go there without visa. But it's very far.

Except in Ryan Lochte's case.

Why didn't Japanese have a visa waiver before now? We Europeans did.

@SenseNotSoCommon: some European countries reciprocate with Brazil on visa politics. But as we read, this is going to change.
