A 63-year-old woman and a 17-year-old high school girl were killed in a two-car collision on the outskirts of Niigata City on Sunday night.
According to police, the two vehicles collided at an intersection in Nishikan Ward at around 6:30 p.m. TBS reported that a minivan collided with another car. Yurina Katsuyama, 17, who was sitting in the back seat of the minivan, sustained heavy injuries. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.
Also killed was Hitomi Aoyagi, 63, a woman riding in the passenger seat of the other car. Her husband, who was driving the car, suffered severe injuries and remains in a critical condition, police said.
There are no traffic lights at the scene of the accident, and the roads leading to the intersection are unobstructed, surrounded by only rice fields.

I'll make a prediction here - she wasn't wearing a seat belt in the back seat. Japan really should get strict on that like every other developed country.

I live in Niigata City. It's "Nishikan-ku", not "Nishiura"; the kanji for "kan" and "ura" are similar.
