Car goes off bridge after being rear-ended by Ferrari

A car went off a bridge and fell about 7.5 meters to the road below after being rear-ended by a Ferrari on Sunday morning in Tokyo.

According to police, the accident occurred on the Hiraoi Bridge that crosses the Arakawa River in Edo Ward at about 9:30 a.m. TV Asahi quoted a witness as saying the Ferrari seemed to be speeding when it hit the car in front of it. The car crashed through a guardrail and landed on a road that runs along the riverbank.

The two passengers in the car, a 63-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman, sustained injuries but are in a stable condition in hospital, police said.

Police are questioning the driver of the Ferrari, a man in his 50s, about the circumstances leading up to the accident.

Unintended acceleration?

Ah yes, the arrogant and irresponsible rich, out joyriding on Golden Week...

in stable condition, thank goodness. The rich are literally driving us to our demise.

Stupid assumption

Probabaly an old parking attendant who was a fan of Ferris Bueller's Day Off....

This can happen to anybody, as the article only mentions a farrai and a car. Personally think its a kei car considering it was able to accelerated with enough force to break a guard rail. Hope everyone will be ok. But the question needs to be raised, for as much as Japan is about standards and regulations, why is there no regulation or for owning and operating a high performance cars on the roads when there is precedent with owning and operating high performance motorcycles?

Very scary for the passengers indeed.... I hope they punish the idiot driver accordingly.

Buy them a new car. A Ferrari

reckless driving is a criminal offense. :-)

Ban the dastardly supercars. No one needs more than XX hp.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

This reckless speed-freak should have his car confiscated, and the Ferrari given to someone responsible. Like me...

Guess the supposed kei car that got hit should not have been driving so slow. People always assume the other driver was speeding or going too fast. That is dumb assumption!!! Guess what driving TOO slow is just as dangerous. So is turning with out a blinker. Running red lights, and stopping with out ANY notice ono 4 lane highways to talk on your phone or god knows what, yet all these things happen a zillion times a day in Japan, most them happen to just my 10 minutes drive to work and back every day. You know.... In the USA they have MINIMUM speed limits posted on highways for reason. It is JUST as dangerous to speed as it is too go too slow. Someone said the ferrier driver was "arrogant and irresponsible rich, out joyriding on Golden Week" Maybe it was exactly the opposisote. The car in front was out joyriding and they thought. "OH hey slow down here" or "hey stop here" to look at the view or river. The driver who rear ended them is still technically at fault of course, but the accident could have been avoided. I would pay good money on the fact the car that got rear-eneded was not going the intended speed for that road.

Robert: speculation for speculation: what if the car stopped for any technical reason? Any driver must be able to stop in case of a sudden obstacle.

Then pushing the obstacle off a bridge requires a lot of energy (mass x speed). Thus, this is not speculation to say that the Ferrari (quite a light car) was going fast. Just kinetic physic!

all these things happen a zillion times a day in Japan

..then how come there are so few fatalities?

People should read the entire article before making negative comments on here or any other unnecessary comments that doesn' need any further explanation!

The article CLEARLY says:

"TV Asahi quoted a witness as saying the Ferrari seemed to be speeding when it hit the car in front of it"!

"the Ferrari seemed to be speeding"

This should not be surprising.

Funny, if it was a nissan fairlady z, the brand wouldn't have been announced....double standards?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Jeez - seriously???!!! A couple get rear-ended and it is THEIR fault???!

It doesn`t matter how slow they were going. He rear-ended them. It is HIS fault. End of. And clearly he rear-ended them hard enough to push them off the road. So do you still think he was not going too fast?

I hope the injured couple get better soon, and I hope that BurakuminDes take me out for a spin when they award him this guys car....

How's the Ferrari?

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

It may be a good deal now buying the broken Ferrari...

quite literally a [Sunday Driver] then, glad to hear the innocents involved weren't too badly injured

Japanese don't belong driving ferraris it seems

This is why old people should not have super cars

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Pride, arrogance, and foolishness.

Anybody remember the time that 14 super cars piled up in Yamaguchi?? Talk about poetic justice for the wreckless.

Here's the aftermath of the Yamaguchi pile-up

Hmm I wonder if the driver was that fifty year old doctor who got into trouble making a Youtube video of driving his Ferrari traveling well above the legal speed limit last year. That doctor said that he had made the video because he wanted to feel important but he had unfortunately also filmed his license plate before doing the driving video. No we could not be that lucky. It has to be another driver. [Grin]

then how come there are so few fatalities?

Because roads are crowded, car ownership is relatively low and driving speeds are low. A better comparison would be accidents per kilometer driven.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

The speed limit was 40 kph in that area. Even if the car that was rammed was going at a lower speed, there is not enough Kinetic energy in the Ferrari to do that amount of damage if it was doing 40 kph. There fore the Ferrari was travelling at a much higher speed .

Ah yes, the arrogant and irresponsible rich, out joyriding on Golden Week..

Actually I was wrong on this, its not a stupid assumption. Its 4 stupid assumptions. Arrogant? Rich? Irresponsible? and Joyriding? There is nothing in the article except vague statements that inspire your negative comments towards any of the people.

63-year-old man? In a Prius or other awesome hyprid? Oh I know too well how they change to the fast lane, without ever watching their rear mirror, at a speed of 5km/h faster than the car they intend to overtake ;)

Even during Golden Week, I can't imagine there being enough room to stretch the legs on a modern Ferrari in Tokyo. Oh that's right, he did run out of room.

63-year-old man? In a Prius or other awesome hyprid? Oh I know too well how they change to the fast lane, without ever watching their rear mirror, at a speed of 5km/h faster than the car they intend to overtake ;)

Yes, that seems to be universal.

Rear ending another car makes you 100% liable and should cost that Farrari owner a bundle besides replacing the other car and maybe his own car not including compensation and medical. He'd better be heavily covered.

He should lose his license and his car. What an eejit.
