"A parade of Pikachus, [sic] the most popular Pokemon character, welcome visitors to the game's first-ever championship held in Japan."

Photo caption correction: The plural form of Pikachu is Pikuchu; 's' is extraneous.

Back in the late 80s/early 90s my friends and I were going nuts for baseball cards and paying stupid amounts of money (though relatively modest compared to the figures mentioned in this article) for them.

Guess this is the current generation’s version of that. Which is fine by me.

Thus the lovely area down the coast is temporarily known as “Yotakuhama”:-)

I used to have the card game back in my uni days. If I remember right, it was a fun battle game based on an elemental rock-paper-scissors system, with extra elements of strategy from actions requiring different energy costs, having to choose when to attack or defend (or sacrifice) and being wary of status effects. I'm sure there are similar strategy games not featuring cute, super-commercialized Nintendo critters that many people knocking Pokemon would enjoy.

Familiar with the name, always assumed it was a computer game.

Not for me but seems harmless.

Horses for courses.
