It also results in waste of resources. What people have used become no use.

Marriage doomed to failure even before it's official! Never a great idea for the groom to see his bride in her wedding dress before the wedding! (That is if you believe in those "old-wives" tales!)

But they are Japanese, and wedding dresses are a western tradition, so maybe they are immune!

There is something about a wedding dress that makes even the plainest of women look beautiful! I wish them luck!

Kenzo Watanabe and his fiancée Chiharu Yanagihara paid just 48,000 yen for an all-inclusive wedding ceremony that normally would cost nearly 70,000 yen.

That has to be a misprint, more like 48,000 dollars. The gift money alone from the guests is usually 30,000yen.

No it is not a misprint. This couple is not doing a full blown wedding, from the looks of it, and from experience, they are probably getting a "package-deal" with wedding dress rental/tux rental, and associated pictures and ceremony officiated by a Buddhist monk.

You probably misunderstood from this line here;

for an all-inclusive wedding ceremony that normally would cost nearly 70,000 yen.

Those are not weddings you attended, those were receptions, and more new couples are avoiding the lavish receptions because of the costs involved.

And BTW, 30,000 is once again Tokyo-centric, as only family members relatives, or maybe very close friends, would ever give 30,000 down here in Okinawa. The average is 10,000 for guests!

Unlucky or not, doomed or not, I'd loved to see myself in a wedding dress being married to a Jman who was able to afford a hanko stamping ceremony!! It's 2019, is that still believable?

Pretty sure that in all the divorces in all history, seeing the bride in her wedding dress before the wedding was never a major cause. May have been used as an excuse a few times, but that's different.

Shame to think of all those Dead Elephants from making those IVORY HANKOs

I think it must be a typo too. Just renting a dress is usually about 200,000 yen (which must be one of the most lucrative businesses in the world i.e. renting something out for more than the actual cost/value of the item!).

48000 does not get you an "all-inclusive" wedding ceremony.

It might get you a gaijin "priest" and use of a chapel for 20 minutes, but there are lots of other things to pay for.

If a dress and tux are included, they will be Mega Donki level.

¥45000 is 10 bottles of bubbly at liquor mountain or 4 bottles in a bar.

I would pay ¥45000 to see my partner in a wedding dress. But he is japanese and too serious.

@Yubaru: that's not correct, you can only get legally married at the ward office. Most couples do this month's or even years before hand. Wearing the dress and suit in Japan is just for the party, which costs 750,000yen at a minimum, more likely going up to 2-3 million for the fake foam cake, all the clothing you have to rent and the space itself (for only 2 hours).

It is not a misprint. Do some basic research and you will see that it is quite possible to get an all-inclusive wedding package (ceremony only) for under 70,000 yen that includes a surprising amount.

Really? You too do not know about weddings in Japan if you think that a wedding here is at a ward or local office! Not to mention the fact that "wearing a dress and suit" is just for the party.

Seems to me far too many people here truly misunderstand the wedding industry here!

The "ward" office, (BTW, it does not have to be the "ward" office, it can be the city, town, or village office too) is for registering the marriage.

And you are also wrong if a RECEPTION (結婚披露宴 kekkon hirouen) costs ¥750,000 at a minimum. (Some do, some don't, but for discussion sake I will use this as the guideline!)

The "all inclusive" in the article is for the Buddhist ceremony that is held by couples PRIOR to the reception IF they are having a reception at all! That is the "wedding" part.

Many couples today, go this route to save money. They pay around ¥50,000 to ¥150,000 or so to rent a dress and tuxedo to have their "official" wedding pictures taken, and no it's not just for the reception. Many also have the wearing of a traditional wedding kimono included in the package, for the Buddhist portion of the ceremony, as the dress or suit is not worn during that ceremony.

Want one more reason why you are mistaken? My daughter and her husband went that route, because they held their reception at a local restaurant and there was no "formal" reception for their wedding.

I paid about ¥80,000 yen for their "formal" wedding pictures taken by a professional camera-man, at a local "wedding studio". They had their pictures taken in kimono as well and we had the Buddhist ceremony performed at the wedding studio as well. Then they changed into the traditional white dress and tux and were taken by limo to the beach (as their choice) for their wedding pictures.

Furthermore, Okinawa is the number one location for resort weddings in Japan, nearly 18,000 couples a year here get married! And nearly half from overseas, more than Hawaii by the way. And weddings are a huge businesses here.

You can get full receptions, with all the assorted ceremonies, dresses and kimonos, including up to around 50 guests, for a package deal of around ¥500,000.

Sorry, I wrote Buddhist style, it's Shinto in Japan. Unintentional mistake! Sorry!

By the way, here is one things many foreigners do here in Japan too!

Geez it does not cost 200,000 for the kimono rental either, and it's not just for the party!

All-inclusive would include the venue (chapel or shrine) including flowers and music, separate waiting rooms for both families before the ceremony, joint one after for drinks, photos, etc.... ¥70,000 sounds pretty cheap. Most quotes I have seen are double that or more.

Maybe they mean ¥70,000 per guest?

Geez it does not cost 200,000 for the kimono rental

It depends on what you're renting. My rented wedding dress a million years ago was around ¥300,000 and would have been more for a kimono which we managed to persuade the in-laws I did not need or want.

Oh come on, it's talking about a discount wedding!

No, it would not! You can get an "all inclusive" wedding at a wedding studio, that provides the facilities, dress, changes, makeup, pictures, and what not, as I described in an earlier post.

There are no guests at this type of wedding, it's basically a "couples" affair, and maybe family will be there for the Shinto rights, IF they are included, or in front of a "minister" stating their vows.

Where are people coming up with these fantasies!

¥70,000 reduced to ¥48,000. Sounds like a discount to me.

You probably can. And you can pay way, way more for more.

Past experience. Weddings are horrendously expensive.

After you talked about a "per guest cost" and wrote as well "Maybe they mean ¥70,000 per guest?"

But I guess you didnt take the time to actually read the article!

Nothing about "per guest" there!

Chiharu-san says, 'we are hosting a few events' - without guests?

Which just means that they wanted a cheap wedding! And you know that I was talking about no guests at the wedding. Nice try though!

Past experience. Weddings are horrendously expensive.

So, you think that everyone pays that much, and in the past an average wedding was expeinsive here, world-famous like expensive. But you and others automatically ASSUME that all weddings are cut from the same cake! They arent!

I'm intrigued, what kind of 'event' would you imagine they are planning that has no guests and would be expensive?

So, you think that everyone pays that much

No, obviously some people do it on the cheap. (The cheapest you can go is simply handing in your 婚姻届at the town/city/ward office.) But some people don't mean everyone wants a cheapo do. Just lookit the wedding halls, hotels, etc., that cost a small fortune and are fully booked up months in advance.
