“It was crazy. I’m just a normal guy eating hot dogs on the Fourth,” he said. “You can’t overcomplicate it.”

apparently you can, with trite dumb comments like “He wanted it, but I needed it,” “He should’ve won it, it was his to win,”

Wow, the Japanese must be shattered to see their most prominent sportsperson lose. I can't wait to see him on the Saturday night talk show getting consoled by the team of immature twits.

Good to see the comments of the winner playing down the importance of this charade.

This story reminds me of a friend of mine who is a doctor. He specializes in emergency gastrointestinal surgery, which often involves clearing blockages, etc. Christmas at his house is in early December because around Christmas time he is always on 24-hour a day call. He reckons that in a normal year between Christmas and New Year he has 30 emergency cases that require surgery because people eat too much.

This has got to be the most complete and longest article JT has ever uploaded in the National section. Most seem to be two paragraph wonders that whet the appetite for more information. Could it be AP is more thorough than Kyodo - sort of mirroring the hot dog eating championships?

Congratulations (?) to Chestnut for, er, being a glutton and to Kobayashi for wanting to be a glutton. Hmmm. Bloated, high blood pressure and nausea. Plus ... $10,000! Go for it!

An American beats a Japanese in a hot dog eating contest here as a lot of other Americans get prepared to smack around the Japanese in the Olympics next month. Go USA!

he was too injured to compete

I wonder what the hell that means?

And it shouldn’t want to. In fact, it’s downright bad for your health, says Dr Marc Siegel, a professor at New York University School of Medicine. “Hot dogs are extremely unhealthy, especially when eaten at high volume, they’re really processed, they have high cholesterol and too much salt,” he said. And thanks to the quantities the competitors ate, they’ll likely suffer nausea, bloat, headache, and possibly high blood pressure for several days as the body slowly digests the food. “One is bad for you, five’s worse and 50 is terrible,” he said.

Enough said - end of matter

Heck, Chestnut, at 95 kilos, should be able to eat WAY more than Kobayashi, at 58 kilos.

"the two went dog-to-dog in the final stretch"

Har!
