They are historically Chinese, until USA stole them and gave to Japan illegally.

China says the whole world was historically Chinese. It actually never was, neither were the Senkaku's. China likes to claim everything. South China sea is case in point. Claim it illegally and ignore the worlds claim to them as international waters. Waters never claimed by China prior to the CCP.

is it really worth a war, over some oil and gas and fish?

China seems to think so. Why wouldn't everyone else agree with that? Billions of dollars in resources are attached to those Japanese islands.

China's official stance on the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands is that these islands have been China's sovereign territories historically and under international law. If so, China's coast guard has every right to patrol its territorial waters, telling foreign (Japanese) vessels not to trespass the area.

The catch is if the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands have really been part and parcel of China’s since time immemorial as Beijing claims matter-of-factly. There's a lot of room to dispute that. That's why I suggest a forum, even on a civilian level, be established to discuss the issue and further mutual understanding of it.

The Senkaku cannot be intelligently referred to as "disputed" just because one, totalitarian, aggressive state wants it. It is the Senkaku islands. Why this article refers to the islands repeatedly in CCP vernacular is beyond me. The powers that be might as well start referring to all of Ukraine as a "disputed" territory because Putin wants it.

Russia wants Ukraine and has used the 'ethnic Russian' excuse for his invasion, but it is not valid. And China thinks they can take these islands but they don't even have an excuse whatsoever. They too can be sanctioned. They need to mind their own beeswax.

That was the delusions caused by those extreme Ukrainians. Ukraine was under the Russian Empire rule from 1793-1918 & Soviet rule from 1921-1991. It was Ukraine stolen Russian lands.

Nope, sorry, you don't just get to deny the existence of the 44 million people that live there that were granted freedom in 1991 and don't want to be part of a fascist empire anymore.

The Allies of second world war has agreed that Imperial Japan must return all the lands she taken by force which trace back to 1895. That was a mistake, because the aggression of I.J. begun since Meiji-era. Okinawa was the first victim.

The Cairo declaration and thus the Potsdam declaration specified 1914 as the date of which territory gains were to be rolled back, so not including the Senkakus or Okinawa. It's really a good thing the US has been there to prevent a Chinese and Russian attempt to violate the principle of territory integrity. You would have split off Okinawa with few native language speakers just to try to prevent it from being host to a military base.

But you know, the strategic value of that island was great, that's why it was keep under direct US military occupation and later gifted to Japan, a trustworthy cold war ally to protect US interest. The Senkakus belonged to that interest of America.

Ukraine hasn't forgotten the lands stolen by Russia.

But Ukraine was nothing relevant with the Senkakus. The island was stolen by US occupied for 27 years as part of Okinawa US military occupation and gifted by Nixon in 1972.

I NEVER have said China owned Okinawa, not even a single day. The relationship between ancient Chinese empire was equal & Okinawa kingdom was independent.

China making every body vassal....?

Which China you mean, the China after 1949 or before? I am sure China didn't do that after 1949. North Korea, Pakistan, North Vietnam...these are collaborations!

Okinawa was no Japanese soil, Imperial Japan stolen that island and expelled the Okinawan kingdom in 1879. Japan has no legitimate reasons on that areas including the Senkaku islands. America occupied there from 1945-1972 and a dirty deal was made returned to Japan that year. So China is right to keep up the claim of Senkakus

Okinawa is owned by somebody and since criminal China had a practice of making everybody their vassal any Chinese claim to Okinawa should be filed in the wastebasket where it belongs.

So China cannot back tracked the right version after history research of the Senkakus after 1968?

Now you are catching on. There is a reason it is said that possession is 9/10 of the law. And before you apply this to Ukraine, Ukraine hasn't forgotten about the lands stolen by Russia.

The reason why Japan don’t ever dare build a naval base in the Diayutai islands is because Tokyo inherently knows it belongs to Ilan county , ROC-Taiwan.

No. The senkakus belong to Japan. China is just trying to steal them. Very China of them.

Total lie. Chinese (PRC) maps showed them to be Japanese territory (part of Okinawa) until 1968.

The only human presence on the island was a Japanese fish processing factory.

China usurped Taiwan's claim over fishing rights in 1971, seeing the strategic value in breaking the first island chain.

Based on the name, East China Sea Islets, there shouldn’t be anything to dispute.

@Midnight Sun Tribe

It is more than 'one, totalitarian, aggressive state wants it.' Even Japan agreed to shelve the question of ownership and there was no problem at all until Ishihara, unilaterally declared in a speech to the Heritage Foundation in the US, that they were Japanese. Incidentally, Senkaku is merely a translation of the English name, 'Pinacle Islands,' so as they do not even have their own name for them, it seems obvious that historically, they did not belong to Japan.

The Chinese "Coast Guard" is better equipped/armed than the navies of most nations. Their cutters may as well be warships that are painted white.

Japan needs to grow a pair and stop trying to appease China! Built structures there before the chinese do!

If you want to claim land, you need to put some token people there. Once people are there, it could just be a fishing dock with some supplies and a few people to watch it, then those people's nationality makes a huge difference. Japan shouldn't be surprised when China does this. Japan needs to do it first.

Japan should put SAM batteries on the island.

Correction:

In other news. . . China continues to "shamelessly" intrude on the territorial waters of other countries.

In other news... Chinese ship enters "Chinese" waters...
