I hope these altercations occurred between the recent Yokohama court's order that Japanese planes can only fly between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m..

“China’s defense ministry said jets were scrambled in the East China Sea on Saturday after Japanese aircraft entered its air defense zone during maritime exercises with Russia.”

It looks like Chinese regime is tightening its grip in East China Sea,

Japan may have to wake up to get used to the reality: this incident which Chinese jets and JSDF aircraft got intimacy with each other in the mid of air near Senkakus islands indicated that Chinese may scramble their jets regularly in response to Japanese aircraft flying in China’s controversial ADIZ the same way Japan has been doing for years to Russina and Chinese aircraft.

Somehow this development may become a game-changer and a challenge for Japan’s SDF pilots. Any misjudgments could result in escalating the situation into an armed conflict which could have ramifications across a broad swathe of global economic activities not to mention put pressure on Japan’s own financial markets and economy.

What is the panic about?

Chinese and Russian forces were in the middle of military exercises when Japanese planes burst in!

What would have happened if this had been a Chinese plane bursting in on a joint US/Japan exercise?

Japan is acting like a frightened rabbit scrambling war planes at the slightest Chinese action. Changing Article 9 is DEFINITELY NOT a good idea.

-15 ( +11 / -26 )

burst in!

I think that's a bit of an exaggeration, don't you think?

I'm sure the Chinese and Russians do this when ever the US and its allies have war games. No surprise here. They don't really say how close the Japanese got to the fleet, just that they were in the vicinity of the "disputed islets", which is now in both Japans and Chinas air defense zone.

So, that China felt that it would try to intimidate the Japanese UNARMED aircraft, proves exactly what EthanWilber said about China, that they are "tightening its grip."

Another day, another provocative action by the Chinese Communist Party.

Ah, Russia, China, and North Korea. A more perfect group of arrogant, deluded, human rights abusing, aggressive, hypocritical paper tigers has never been assembled.

Chinese and Russian forces were in the middle of military exercises when Japanese planes burst in!

What would have happened if this had been a Chinese plane bursting in on a joint US/Japan exercise?

Exactly - what would happen? Probably nothing. The plane would go around and get back without US Navy sending planes. We don't even know where exactly it happened and how far from the drill. China entered Cold War times here. And Japanese plane had all rights to fly over and take pictures of Chinese and Russian ships taking pictures. Last year it was Japanese DD and earlier it was Chinese destroyer taking an aim at Japanese DD. I doubt Chinese even have CoC over such things.

As MGigante says, another day another provocation by dearest China.

Perhaps this is a slight tangent, but the article mentions the Philippines complaints that China is: "reclaiming land on a disputed reef

Anyone know what the environmental implications are of such actions? surely that would kill the reef. Where is Sea Shepherd? Or would this not be a part of their purview.

And this is why china market must now be suspended from any more growth.

These headlines in china is what china said. There people are not free and have no right, but back the government every time, from hearing there reports. This is a Nazi thing were all the public will support because they don't know the hole true, but are told what there gov wants them 2 no.

As soon as they have there $20 trillion saved up and own half of the west bonds and so on, is when they start a real massive massive war & will just tell there people we are trying to takeaway there jobs and started everything and war must be. This just means 100% the public will back them as they are 100% brained washed and everyone here knows it.

All the signs have already been seen for over 8 years, along china top leading making media statements time after time denying building up, denying building attack weapons & denying hacking. They denied they were making a aircraft Carrie and said it was a pure lie with no poor and they 100% denied these lies. As it turned out "again" it was a out right like from china's top ruling guy who had already signed the paper work to buy it "as shown / proven 2 us months after they releases that statement".

They have lied to us and been busted months after after over 10 times on big things that have to do with us saying they want to start wars "look" and them denying it saying "not true" and that the west are lairs as they are not building attack weapons and so on.

Hate to brake it to everyone but as my grammar may suck, its beyond clear what is taking place and what is 100% going to happen unless we act right now. They China must lose there growth unto they stop all lies and trouble like calming the hole area and new world.

People must not forget china does mass murder 1,000s of people are year that talk out. 1,000s go missing and other are jailed. China is the reason why we don't give evil country's a market a country not to trust or let build up. Its beyond clear.

China is building up on a massive scale and reached a point 6 - 8 years ago knowing money can not make people learn how to make TEC. China is now just saving up mass trillions and spending billions to hack and steal tec to build up for war. China will have $15 Trillion dollars in 15 years time "easy" and will be able to spend mass trillions to build the tec once they got it all together.

Don't worry about Americas $750 billion D-budget. China can spend a whopping $15 trillion on mass weapons out doing America and can start any way they want to run the country taking in there taxes.

I just hope people understand that china is building a 5,000 mile long underground nuclear proof tunnel systems. They can sent troops forward away from attack and can live in there as it full nuclear proof. They clearly have plans of wars to build things like that.

Not worth the risk and there lies is the proof of this. The time to act is now and that first step is halting there grows. The affect's will not be massive on the world market as china growth not is so small, but it will crush them. India will need the west to invest billions there to hope up the cheap goods drop off "in growth" only.

china has been building tensions purposely cause it knows its economy is going to tank at some point and then they will use any little excuse to start a war to take their peoples eyes off the ball and prevent revolution.

China’s defense ministry said jets were scrambled in the East China Sea on Saturday after Japanese aircraft entered its air defense zone

Considering that China claims pretty much all of the South and East China Seas, in their eyes it is impossible for Japan to fly anywhere without it being Chinese airspace. China is going way too far now. The US needs to fly some more B52's through China's ADIZ. Armed ones this time, to show that they really are protecting their ally, and that they really do opposed China's aggressive expansionism. China has been amping the tension for the past couple years now. They're angling for war, a war they can't hope to win. How pathetic.

WAS IT WORTH IT??

Me thinks not!

Its time to start caging that monster we all helped create, its pretty clear now or should be that China is on the war path, the longer we wait to deal with her the nastier it WILL GET!

Sadly we are likely going to let the monster grew some more, the cost in lives & property is going to be MASSIVE!

Since Japan's nationalization of the disputed islands last year, China is stepping up to the plate over its sovereignty claim and probably because of the strong public opinions from nationalist at home. Therefore China continues to walk a thin line by scrambling its fighter planes to provoke Japan. This is nothing new and China will continue to flex its muscles sending planes regularly. It is all a game and a way to send a message and show that they are serious. But they probably will not shoot any plane down. However history indicates that these types of issues have been the cause of some wars.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

And the case for US bases is made once again in a way that that all of the rhetoric of the anti-US and anti-base folks ever used can't come close to matching. The Chinese and Russians are only looking for weakness in Japan but that will not happen as long as the US is there. The more we read about aggressive Chinese military the more that the people of Japan and the US are going to support an active response to said aggression.

Is this fact or your interpretation of current events? Is the lousy English grammar due to your 'typing' or was it the programmers of the Chinese to English translation programme?

Clearly, something is wrong in China but fanning the flames without proof really doesn't help the problem.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

First, a coalition of asian countries need to band together, shoulder to sholder, send in forces and retake the philipine islet where a future chinese base will be, second. this chinese air space needs to be denounced by all countries in the UN. third, Trade and Markets need to be renegotiated and China needs to be cut off. Without the american scratch they cant afford their military build up.

“Closing in while flying normally over the high seas is impossible,”

Then how did they do it?

Novenchama: "Therefore China continues to walk a thin line by scrambling its fighter planes to provoke Japan."

Before your 'therefore' you admit this all started with Japan's nationalization of the disputed islands. THEREFORE, who is provoking whom?

They had been getting away for so long, let see how much longer they can go on behaving like this.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

smithinjapan;

this all started with Japan's nationalization of the disputed islands. THEREFORE, who is provoking whom?

China.

The Senkakus nationalization is a red herring. The islands were part of Japan before the sale. Japan bought (nationalized) the property on those islands, and now said property is no longer on the market. Buying the property changed absolutely nothing about their status as Japanese territory.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

This was a bad idea for Japan to send fighters at that time.

This make Russia feel bad, does it really neccesary to make Russia unhappy? ,obviously Russia does't like any other irrelevant fighters went there.

Chenchan makes an interesting point. The Koreans seem to disclose much more about Chinese and Russian naval exercises than I am picking up here in Japan (http://www.japantoday.com/category/national/view/china-japan-exchange-barbs-over-action-by-warplanes-in-east-china-sea And the Koreans say that there is little that they can do about it right now, interestingly. And, an interesting Youtube video report from China in English about the Sino-Russian exercises (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgxCvLJV6Oo), with far more detail than I have ever seen here or from the US or from Australia. That does not mean I accept it all, such as they do not actually say where they are. So, it is not just as simple as Chinese flying into Japanese airspace. It was a Japanese observation plane that was checked on. I think that if it had been a scrambled Japanese fighter jet within 50 meters of a Chinese one, the story would have been different. There is another story on JT today, about the old lady on the island in western Okinawa prefecture, 400 kilometers from China and 2,000 kilometers from Tokyo. And anyway, much closer to Taiwan too.

More Cold War saber rattling! China's ignorant and hostile behavior will only lead to one outcome: serious conflict!

hokkaidoguy: "The Senkakus nationalization is a red herring."

Not at all, if the question is where did all the current tensions increase and who provoked whom. But it's an illness many people here suffer -- to outright deny any fault and blame others. It's in the history books (or rather, in the omissions), in the politics, and in the day to day life. Of COURSE it's therefore all China's fault! You only need one person to do the tango, after all.

"The islands were part of Japan before the sale."

So why the need to buy them beyond making political gesture? You defeat your own argument, hokkaidoguy. But hey, you can always blame it on China (and South Korea, and North Korea, and Thailand, and the US, and everyone else who does not agree with the current trending argument).

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

So why the need to buy them beyond making political gesture?

As has been covered a bajillion times, smith: the former owner put his property up for sale.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

@smithinjapan

You need to study just a little about property law and the nature of sovereignty.

If I sell my back garden to China, does it become Chinese? Whilst I own it, is it not Japanese?

Just, in this case, we can blame China for aggressing against what, legally, it clearly Japanese sovereign territory and waters.

Let me see.... a couple of Japanese surveillance planes where fling in side their territory (yes inside, the Sankaku Islands are internationally recognized as Japanese).

Armed Chinese fighters scramble and get close to the surveillance planes as in escort/coercing formation....

This in a more every day kind of terms is something like this... I am at the porch of my house looking outside with a camera of my neighborhood (may be taking pictures). Then my neighbor across the street come with a bat in hand, get in to my front yard all the way to my porch and in a menacing manner tells me that I am on his lawn...... Chinese logic....

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Then my neighbor across the street come with a bat in hand, get in to my front yard all the way to my porch and in a menacing manner tells me that I am on his lawn...... Chinese logic....

It is tough to argue against/with Chinese logic, as it has not developed like it did in Europe and India, for example. It's like different worlds trying to communicate, have the other party to listen or obey, but the frequencies, the wavelengths do not correspond.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Daniel: "Then my neighbor across the street come with a bat in hand, get in to my front yard all the way to my porch"

The property up until your porch is not yours, it is disputed property, so your little allusion is silly at best. And by said allusion, you walked into the middle of the road between your house and your neighbour's, claimed to buy it, and then asked for cooperation and that they could not use the street.

So, you see how it's not one-sided? Probably not. As much as you guys cry about China being the bad guy in this picture, you fail to note how you are exactly the same.

NovenachamaMay. 26, 2014 - 11:06AM JST Since Japan's nationalization of the disputed islands last year, China is stepping up to the plate over its sovereignty >claim and probably because of the strong public opinions from nationalist at home

That is actually incorrect. The PLAN openly declared an intent to take control of the entire South and East China Seas, replace the United States as the dominant strategic power in East Asia and break the First Island Chain as early as 2002/2003. China established the East China Sea Fishery Research Agency to control the movement of he Chinese fishing fleet, and it was under direct orders that the drunk Chinese captain created an incident in 2010 by ramming two JCG vessels. Today Chines fishermen have been designated Maritime Militia and the fishing fleet plays a an offensive role in China's territorial expansion program. The fact that the J-govt purchased 3 of the 5 islands from their Japanese civilian owners has been labelled "nationalized" and used as an excuse for China's open aggression. However it is nothing more than an excuse since the J-govt has always owned one of the 5 islands and even let the US use it as a live fire bombing range in the late 70s. There is no question that China's declared intentions, their military and territorial expansion are all being carried out step by step with the clear willingness to engage in war to attain accomplishment. Of course, China has also openly declared their preparation for war as well. Nearly all the comments posted which highlight China's belligerence and attempt to provoke an engagement as right on target. I also think that we should fly a couple B-2s through their alleged ADIZ and disclose it afterwards. Another step would be to combine JSDF and US surveillance missions so those SU-27 pilots can get a look at some real hardware. Close up if they want to.

Crazy Pilot pushing wrong button can lead to war between two country. Why Communist Chinese Government want to do such stupid confrontation with its neighbors?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

China had proposed urgent talks, it said, and demanded that Japan “respect the lawful rights of China’s and Russia’s navies ... and stop all reconnaissance and interference activities. Otherwise Japan will bear any and all consequences from this”.

Communist China has been really looking for a Causes Belli to start a regional war and it will keep trying to provoke one out of Japan.

Communist China believes that right now they have a superior force because they have the funds and their young want a war of Conquest. But, like most nations with Imperial ambitions they think too highly of themselves and don't have respect for their enemies.

Communist China forgets that it doesn't have the capability of sending wave after wave of PLA soldiers to fight a Naval war. Communist China's tactic has always been to place a machine gun in the rear and then send their vaulted Army soldiers forward. Those that turn and run meet a foul end from hot Communist Chinese lead.

Large scale naval wars is what Communist China can't win since it only has so many ships. So, in the coming war their tactic will be the same tactic Huang Gai used during the battle of Red Cliff, convert their smaller less valuable ships into fire ships and try to destroy the US and Japanese navies that way.

But, the US and Japanese forces are a bit more experienced than Cao Cao's forces were back then. And this tactic will only end with the sinking of many ships and the loss of many Chinese sailors. What will the Communist Party do when their ships start sinking in droves? Execute the ships for losing the battle?

It is a matter of time before Communist China's Imperial ambitions get the better of them and place them into a no win scenario and ends the Communist Party's rule. But, before this happens China will suffer for the Imperial ambitions of their Communist leaders.

War is always the last resort, but when the goal is Imperialism war is the only resort.

JoeBigs, you seem to have a very vivid imagination about the impending war between Japan and “Communist” China. According to you “Communist” China would definitely lose, well heck, even the US doesn’t want to get into a fight with China, but you know best I guess. For one thing China will not fight a losing battle and so is Japan, so your pipe dream is off the mark. This time it is definitely Japan’s fault by sending in two surveillance planes into the “no fly” zone. No matter how you want to put it this is considered to be a provocation, so “Communist” China has the right to respond the way it did.

Communist China has been really looking for a Causes Belli to start a regional war and it will keep trying to provoke one out of Japan.

And once more JoeBigs is spreading the CCP's propaganda, trying to pretend that it is a communist state. China does not follow the tenets of communism, and therefore is not a communist state.

The fact that Joe presses this propaganda so hard has to make the rest of his posts suspect.

flowersMay. 27, 2014 - 07:07AM JST JoeBigs, you seem to have a very vivid imagination about the impending war between Japan and “Communist” China.

No, what I have is very sound reasoning as to why Communist China will start the next World War, Imperialistic Dream that the Communist call the China Dream.

You probably have seen the posters around in your travels, they depict cubby smiling Chinese children. Look up China dream then look up Document Number 9. You might realize that the Communist China Dream is just the same old same old wrapped in a new package.

flowersMay. 27, 2014 - 07:07AM JST According to you “Communist” China would definitely lose, well heck, even the US doesn’t want to get into a fight with China, but you know best I guess.

This is what you Communist just don't get, the United States doesn't want a war, it wants to keep things as it is. Communist China takes this to mean that the United States fears the powerful Paper Dragon known as the PLA/PLA. But, again you are seriously misunderstanding the US of A and it's ability to wage any sort of war.

You guys might want war and when it comes you will not want it ever again.

If you believe that sending planes within Japan's territory is sending planes into a no-fly-zone then you are mistaken once again. Also, there are no and I mean no NO_FLY_ZONES except those imposed illegally by Communist China.

International waters are just that, International Waters. Just because a Sea's name has the word "China" in it doesn't mean it is China's territory.

Next, you guys will claim that china (ceramics) is also Communist China's territory because it also has the word china in it and will declare a no-fly-zone around any and all s ceramic stores.

flowersMay. 27, 2014 - 07:07AM JST No matter how you want to put it this is considered to be a provocation, so “Communist” China has the right to respond the way it did.

As Communist China reacted during the Hainan Island incident when one of your maverick pilots messed up and flew into an American EP-3 who was also flying in international waters?

Communist China is playing a dangerous game and it's paid posters couldn't careless because they get 50-cents per post.

But, 100 years from the end of the next great war that Communist China starts a new batch of paid posters will be claiming that the war wasn't their fault. But, 100 years from now Communist China will just be a scarey story parents tell their kids.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Then how did they do it?

By not flying normally. Onodera was referring to standard fight patterns and patrols within each nation's airspace. In that scenario, approaching so close is impossible, since planes from either side would have to fly into the contested airspace to make an approach. This is not normal flying, and is exactly what China has done. The Chinese ADIZ extends beyond China's recognized airspace. Their fighters were flying outside of the airspace in order to approach with a few dozen metres of Japan's surveillance and early warning aircraft. Typically an aggressive manoeuvre.

Strangerland: Is that your only argument? That China doesn't follow the tenets of Communism, so cannot be Communist? So please explain two things. First of all: Explain why their ruling party is the Chinese Communist Party. And Secondly, explain why in the Hell that makes any difference whatsoever. As I have said in the past, the nature of their political system does not change nor jusitify the fact of their aggressive actions and expansionist ambitions. The nature of their political system is entirely irrelevant in this debate, and indeed in all debates about China's actions that I have participated in. Please stop flogging this dead horse, and focus on the matter at hand: The matter of China's blatant bullying of its neighbours.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Strangerland: Is that your only argument? That China doesn't follow the tenets of Communism, so cannot be Communist?

That's the only criteria as to whether a state is communist or not. If they follow the tenets of communism, they are a communist state. If they don't, they are not. It's really quite simple.

First of all: Explain why their ruling party is the Chinese Communist Party.

Because it sounds a lot better than the Chinese Oligarchist Party. By claiming to be communist, they can say they are for, and of the people. When the reality could not be further from this. They are proletariats who care only for the people insofar as it makes them richer and more powerful. It's hard to imagine a leadership much further from communism. They are trying to push a lie, using a euphemism instead to mask their greed, and to hide the truth. This is why I'm amazed that so-called China haters so often push the party line that the country is communist - why not call them for what they are, instead of spreading their lies?

And Secondly, explain why in the Hell that makes any difference whatsoever

Well besides the fact that it's a fact, and that I'm pointing out factual errors, I'd rather see the CPP exposed for what it is, rather than seeing people push their lies.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

JoeBigs, you’ve kept imagining things again. “China Dream” doesn’t mean war but prosperity and strength. China is trying to build the largest middle class population in the world and it’s happening now. And, your theory has a flaw about the US wants to keep things as it is. Ever heard of the “new model of great power relations,” both the US and China are in agreement with this. So, they both agree that change is inevitable. This is from Lowy Institute, “China's new anti-access/area denial capabilities can deny America a quick and easy victory in a maritime clash in the East Asian littoral waters. They have been reassured by America's own Air-Sea Battle doctrine that the US knows it cannot prevail in these waters without launching a major campaign of strikes against Chinese territory. Such strikes would obviously risk a major escalation which might not stop below the nuclear threshold. So China's leaders think their US counterparts understand that a war with China today is one that America could not be confident of either winning or limiting.” Now, where is Japan’s territory in the international waters? China and Russia did not conduct the drill in Japan’s territory. Keep your facts straight for once. Yea, about the Hainan Island incident, I read somewhere that China got all the proof about the US spying on China and the technology from the captured US plane which cost the US a lot of money and the headache. Believe it or not, China will be the leading nation in the world and the signs that it’s happening are everywhere. You know I really wish that I’d get paid 50 cents for every post I made, are you sure it’s that much?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

flowersMay. 28, 2014 - 02:25AM JST “China Dream” doesn’t mean war but prosperity and strength. China is trying to build the largest middle class population in the world and it’s happening now.

Here is the problem. China will be importing 80 percent of her oil needs by 2030. These huge rises in demand for petroleum and other resources are causing rising tensions between China, Japan and Southeast Asian countries. The competition rather than harmony is increasingly driving the energy security policies of both countries, and that an energy-driven rivalry between China and Japan will intensify rather than abate. Sure, China depends on the continuation of rapid economic growth. Problem with China is that it relies heavily on fixed investment to produce growth that is extremely energy dependent. Since China sees securing necessary energy resources as a matter of survival, China's energy strategy is increasingly based on owning and controlling foreign petroleum resources in places such as the Middle East, Africa, South and East Seas.

Do you notice China views its "me-first" mindset toward secure energy resources as prudent? Rather than rely on strengthening an international system of open access based on market prices to secure its energy, China gives its state-owned national oil companies what it needs in the form of cheap loans and other support to directly source resources for China's exclusive use. The point is that the trend toward a nationalistic approach to energy security is likely to significantly harm political relations between the two countries. China's assertivieness in East and South China Seas will be more troublesome soon.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

sfjp330, you are assuming that China has caused energy-driven rivalry. But I thought competition is good for business in the free market regardless of whether its government owned corporation or publicly owned but huge corporation. It’s a natural progression in the search for resources as there are willing sellers and buyers everywhere, it has nothing to do with “me-first” mindset. Note that the international system you mentioned is set and controlled by the West where everybody in the system is forced to play along and when they don’t like it we can see what they did to Russia . It’s more like a “win-win” approach offered by China in the longer term where both sides win; this is where the distinction lies. Don’t tell me you didn’t know that the cheap loans and various assistance also being offered by the West and Japan. From what I can see China is well-diversified in its energy sources and its approaches are quite complimentary. For example, Western media has criticized China for grabbing resources from African countries, ignoring for the facts that their living standards and infrastructures in those countries have been improved substantially only after they’ve dealt with China. How many decades that the West had been in Africa? Many, and we didn’t see any improvement there only the signs that they were living in sub-human standards. But, after China got in, and now everybody wants to be back too. Yes, you are right that China's assertiveness in East and South China Seas will be more troublesome soon. But not because of China, it is more because of politics than anything else. You have to understand that these disputes have been there for many decades already and we didn’t hear much about them until recently. Why? Not that China is now strong, but because some countries want China to look bad. China will have to weather through these storms for a while, but the sky will always be clearer after the storms.

But, your sides interpretation means becoming a Imperialist expansionist state. While the US's means that Communist China was going to make a peaceful growth in the region and avoid conflicts. But, Communist China has done what all Communist always do, use force and violence to get what they want.

But, one thing isn't happening, Communist China isn't supplying and supporting Red Terrorist organizations in the region.

Competition is good but the problem for China is that U.S. controls most of the major oil fields in the world. If you look at today's China problem, they are adding 18 million cars a year, and the domestic energy demand and incease pollution will rise significantly in a decade where leaders of China will be forced to address the problem. Reality is China has lack of real allies. Real strategic alliance or friendship is not a commodity that can be bought and bartered casually. It is based on shared security interests, fortified with similar ideological values and enduring trust. China excels in "transactional diplomacy" romping around the world with its fat checkbook, supporting usually poor, isolated, and decrepit regimes like Nigera, Angola and Sudan in return for favorable terms on natural resources or voting against Western sponsored resolutions criticizing China's human rights record. China will remain deprive of dependable strategic allies because of geography, ideology, and policy. If you look at China, it is situated in one of the toughest geopolitical area in the world. It shares borders with Japan, India, and Russia: three major powers which have all engaged in military conflicts with China in the 20th century.
